Dabo: College football needs 'complete blowup'

Swinney, entering his 14th season as Clemson's head coach, said it's a good thing that players can cash in on their name, image and likeness once they get to school and have a "platform," but said it's nonsensical to think that the current NIL rules weren't going to be used as a recruiting incentive.

"There's no rules, no guidance, no nothing," Swinney said. "It's out of control. It's not sustainable. It's an absolute mess and a train wreck, and the kids are going to be the ones who suffer in the end. There are going to be a lot of kids that end up with no degrees and make decisions based on the wrong things."

Sounds like what a lot of us were saying when it first started to be discussed. I really don't think it's good for the sport to have millionaire athletes.

I don't know what regulations/rules/limits would make it fair, but college football is going to mold into something unrecognizable if they keep things the way they are IMO.

It's pretty much a given that CFB will soon look entirely different.
In fact if you can name 48 teams that belong in Div I I'll give you a lollipop.

"In particular, he sees the larger, more prominent Power 5 schools forming their own division in football."I think there's going to be a complete blowup ... especially in football, and there needs to be," Swinney told ESPN. "I think eventually there will be some type of break and another division. Right now, you got everybody in one group, and it's not feasible. Alabama has different problems than Middle Tennessee, but we're trying to make them all the same and it's just not. I think you'll have 40 or 50 teams and a commissioner and here are the rules."

Wouldn't be surprised to see it end up like European soccer with different league tiers with promotions and relegations every year.

Yep. It’s the direct result of making decisions based on feelings and popular thought rather than logic and facts. As I’ve said before, many of those that pushed for players to get outright paid, completely dismissing the educational and experience benefits a 4 year degree bring, were in the same breaths railing against the student loan crisis. Either they were already getting a massive value or they weren’t. I’m ok witty either, but not some weakly argued combination of both. If the SCOTUS was going to get involved in anything, it should’ve been the NFL’s arbitrary “3 years removed” stipulation. If kids want to(or feel they need to) go straight to the NFL, let them. Forcing them to sit through garbage classes at a school from which they’ll never graduate, while practicing and playing a violent sport that has a penchant for ending athletic careers, is the issue here.

The NCAA, for all its many issues, isn’t the problem here. They should’ve been allowed to keep college athletics for kids who want to play for their school and appreciate the education they’re getting in the process. And if all schools were on a level playing field in that respect it would be just as entertaining as it is with today’s semi-pro feel.

So now we’ve opened a can of worms that can never be closed, and all we see are a bunch of supposedly intelligent people standing around saying, “boy, I didn’t see that coming”, while many of the apparent geniuses here and elsewhere have been forecasting it for years. The end result will ultimately be the destruction of a sport hundreds of millions of people adored because successful people have been successful.

All that said, neteng is dead on as well. This is Swinney whining because he can’t secretly buy players anymore.

He's right, but...

He's also the guy who built a small amusement park in the climpson athletic department, right? What kind of credibility does he have to discuss what is out of control regarding ncaa athletics?

Blah, blah blah, sounds like a whiney azz snowflake beyotch. Deal with it, adapt, overcome. The proverbial genie is out of the bottle, its not going back, so lament all you want about the "good ol'days", not going to change or help you with what is happening today.

Of course it is going to be an issue and already is. Can't disagree but usually when someone is whining, they are butt hurt or going to have trouble competing. Suck it up Dabby, it is what it is now, so we have to go with it. Don't be firing up the excuse machine.

This is an absolutely idiotic take. He wasn't talking about "going back", he's talking about having some guidelines and rules to the current clusterf***, which is ThunderDome. Doesn't sound like too much to ask to me.

Sober up.
