This would have been unthinkable for me to admit even a couple of years ago but I have to agree with you, I think the SEC has really fallen a long way off the top of the pile. I also don't indulge in the majority's desire to blame Saban for it, either.
As of right now, the ACC and Big 10 are most definitely better than the SEC, I don't even think its close.

He just had an undefeated season and his offense currently ranks 7th in the nation in total offense and 8th in the nation in points per game. With that on his resume I would certainly be OK if he ended up as our head coach next year.

My concern would be defense. He hasn't had a good defense under him yet, but I'm sure that can be solved with a good D-Coordinator and some quality SEC recruits.

McElwain had the 18th ranked offense in 2014, and the 25th ranked offense in 2013... so lets not let one season of rankings against inferior opponents. Want to see what happens when he takes a step up in both player and coaching talent.

A lot of people don't want to admit that, but it's true. I get tired of reading "Oh, it's just the ACC that's why he's winning" (you know which coach I'm talking about....that same coach has a 9-1 record vs. the Mighty SEC). This sh*t goes in circles, but right now the SEC is definitely 3rd....and possibly 4th.

Despite Louisville's inexplicable loss to kensucky at the end of the season, the combo of Louisville, Va Tech, Clemson, FSU are a better 4 combo than bama and anyone else in the SEC at this point. Yeah, I know UT beat tech, and the way those teams are at this point I don't believe it would happen again. ACC is getting better b/c talent at both the player and coaching levels are heading to them and the Big 10 instead of the SEC. There's a mass exodus of coaching and player talent in the SEC right now. A lot of coaches are going to those conferences so they don't have to play 2nd fiddle to bama and they are convincing talented kids to follow them... b/c that's what good coaches do. Bama has basically laid waste to the conference and in the long run saban is largely responsible for the conference's demise IMO.

I'll say it again, my top choice (and it should be yours too) is Bryan Harsin at Boise.
Harsin was a flop at Texas. Boise vs. the rest of the trash in the WAC doesn't tell me anything.

I don't hate him, but I'm not sold. Every Boise coach flops when he leaves. Koetter, Nutt, Hawkins, none have had any significant success after they left Boise.

:exactly:

Only Petersen has had any success and the verdict is still out. His first two years were anything but successful

It doesn't matter. In the SEC he is just another guy with smurfs running reverses. That shyt doesn't fly here and never has. IMO, he's the next Hugh Freeze, Malzahn or Cousin Eddy. He is at one of the few schools in the MAC that actually invests in his program and has collected lots more talent than the rest. That's nice but it isn't going to work in the SEC.

Petersen did pretty well for himself at U Dubs.

You can also blame the demise of the BCS. Winning the SEC was a sure-fire way to 1 of the 2 championship slots - a very attractive carrot for any up and coming coach. With the playoff, pretty 4 conferences have a legit shot to make it.

That, and the other conferences getting huge tv deals also balanced the playing field (though, I'm not sure of the timing of those deals vis-a-vis the SEC's deal and too lazy to look up).

He was also the beneficiary of Oregon's post-kelly sprial. But, he's been a well known commodity for a while and could have had his choice of SEC gigs if he didn't want to stay in the pacific northwest. His success so far at Washington is no fluke.

Success? He had a losing conf record twice and is 16-11 in the PAC. Is Kelly successful at ND because he got in the big game once?

With all the problems in the PAC at USC and Oreygun, maybe he works out but he isn't a success at this point yet.

Law, I've said that before about Boise coaches leaving and failing....and everyone wanted to suck-off Peterson like he was the next Urban. I think Harsin took a different route. He actually took the risk and left Boise to go to Texas. He worked for Mac Brown who was running a sinking ship. He then got the head coaching gig at Arkansas State and left for Boise. He's done extremely well there. Of all the "proven" head coaches out there that REALISTICALLY would leave for a better job, this guy at or near the top.

I know everyone on here thinks every coach other than Saban and Meyer is sh*tty. So I'd love to hear who a REALISTIC hire would be. Give me some names. Law, you obviously don't like Fleck. Who would you hire if you were the AD? My realistic choice is Harsin, followed by Jeff Brohm (but now his buyout might be too high since he took the Purdue job). Matt Rhule would have been on my list as well.

If we can't afford to hire Purdue's coach, it's time to shutter the place or move to 1AA. There is no excuse for us accepting being a 3rd or 4th tier team.

If we are somehow limited to WAC and Sunbelt coaches, due to some residual Fooley clause, then shut the fvkker down. Today.

You're really going to criticize a guy who has his team in the playoffs in just his third year after taking over a mediocre program that hadn't had any success in a decade? Really?

The guy is 119--25 in his career as a head coach. His Washington team has scored 30 points or more 28 times in his 3 seasons in charge. 18 times they've scored 40 or more.

Again, I will repeat, they are one of the four teams still in contention for a national title....in his third year. And you claim the jury is still out on whether this guy can coach or not? You would be hard pressed to find to many people who would consider him not to be a success at this point yet.

Harsin wasn't a flop at Texas. Look at their offensive numbers when he was there. Texas hasn't had a decent record since he left there
