Wow. That's an odd move this late in the process. There's more to this...

@DanWolken: Fwiw I had heard weeks ago that Sonny was nosing around coordinator jobs. Was also told he would've returned to La Tech if Holtz left

@DanWolken: Things were bad between Dykes and administration. If Chip (Kelly) lands here that's a genius move by Cal.

@dkurtenbach: Cal doesn’t need to put up too much money for Chip — he’s going to be paid by both the Eagles and 49ers next year.

Looks like Muschamp is not hiring Summers:

http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/so...re-former-assistant-new-offensive-line-coach/

South Carolina offensive line coach Shawn Elliott left the program this offseason to take the head coaching position at Georgia State, leaving Will Muschamp’s staff with an opening.

According to FootballScoop.com, though, the vacancy is close to being filled, as the Gamecocks are reportedly planning to hire former South Carolina assistant Eric Wolford to the position:

At AFCA source tells FootballScoop South Carolina planning to hire Eric Wolford as offensive line coach #49ershttp://FootballScoop.com/the-scoop

According to The State, Wolford served as the running game coordinator and offensive line coach under Steve Spurrier during the 2009 season and has most recently held the offensive line coaching position for the San Francisco 49ers.

John Latina, who had been retired, joined the staff temporarily to coach the Gamecocks’ linemen for the Birmingham Bowl last month.

On another note, Fleck looks to be a star in the making... If he does well I give him two years (three years tops) before he's offered a top notch program.

Butch seems desperate. He's now interviewing Wes Welker (on top of Chris Weinke). Both very good players, but w/ limited coaching experience. The UT's of the world don't seem like the type of places that inexperienced coaches cut their teeth (but then again, we hired the DB coach from UCF and the RB's coach from FIU...to our WR coach).

From SDS:

Is former All-Pro receiver Wes Welker headed from the playing field to the coaching ranks?

According to a report from 247Sports, Welker was in Knoxville on Monday — presumably meeting with head coach Butch Jones to discuss potentially joining the coaching staff.

Tennessee hires new S&C Coach (pretty good hire, imo):

http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/te...ck-gullickson-director-strength-conditioning/

In a move that had been rumored for several weeks now, Tennessee as officially named Rock Gullickson its new director of strength and conditioning. Gullickson has spent the last several seasons in the NFL, working for the LA/St Louis Rams, Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints. Prior to working in the NFL, Gullickson worked with Tennessee head coach Butch Jones at Rutgers.

This is a crucial hire for Jones, as his team was devastated by injury last season. Now with Gullickson on board and leading the offseason workouts, there’s at least some promise that any mistakes made last offseason can be corrected under the guidance of one of the game’s most respected strength and conditioning coaches.

Gullickson comes to Knoxville with quite the resume in NFL circles, as he won NFL Strength Coach of the Year in 2007 and is annually the strength coach at the NFL Combine helping oversee draft prospects’ attempts at the bench press.

“We are estactic to welcome Rock Gullickson and his wife, Terry, into the Tennessee family,” Jones said in a statement announcing the hire. “I’ve personally known Rock for more than 20 years and know what he stands for as a coach and a person. He fits the culture we are continuing to build at UT and he has a comprehensive plan that I truly believe our players will greatly benefit from.

“He is passionate about his work, a tireless worker, detail-oriented and has a tremendous track record of developing and motivating players to reach their maximum potential. The strength staff spends more time with our players than anyone and he, along with our current staff, will provide our players with the type of training needed to compete at the highest level.”

So were we, and have been consistently for years now. But I bet we won't see any changes here...
