I'm not sure I like this rule, but it sure would have helped this year w/ the freshman QBs. There would be no reason ALL freshman don't take a few snaps in a real game if they can play in as many as 4 games and not lose the redshirt. It doesn't go into detail, but say a kid plays in a blowout in game 1 vs. a creampuff....then doesn't play again until game 11 vs. another cream puff....then returns the next season as a "redshirt freshman". Would be great for building depth and gaining experience, but sort of loses the "spirit" of the game (having 4 years to play 5). This would give them 4.3 years to play 5. Thoughts??

CFB coaches propose new redshirt policies

College football coaches want freshmen to get a chance to play without necessarily wasting a year of eligibility.

At the coaches convention in Nashville, the AFCA proposed a new redshirt plan that could drastically change player development.

#AFCA proposes a new eligibility model, still 5 years to play 4, but if athlete plays less than 4 games in a season can be redshirted. pic.twitter.com/AaTufUvHDp

Under current rules, if a player plays one snap of a game, he has effectively burned his redshirt, meaning it will cost him one of his four years of play eligibility. Injured players who have seen limited action (less than 30 percent of team snaps or appear in less than four full games) are eligibile to apply for medical redshirts.

The new plan, allowing any player to play in four games or less without losing a year of eligibility could drastically impact player development and roster management. The AFCA’s tweet does not reference whether the four games would include postseason. A popular fan proposal, endorsed by some media members, is to allow freshman planning to redshirt to play in bowl games without losing a year of eligibility.

If the coaches’ proposal is adopted, cupcake games and non-playoff bowl games could become much more interesting for fans if it means coaches are able to play freshmen without worrying about the loss of eligibility.

Yes, I'm aware of what you posted.

I was just making a joke. Sorry it offended you ;)

No offense, I was just curious when this was debated before....since it was just proposed today (unless, of course, the coaches previously proposed this, which I'm not aware of, but could be wrong, and you may be right - that we are debating this - again. So, that's all!! :D ).

There was a big go around on this about how the redshirt rule worked. A real knock down drag out fight

I don't recall when it actually was though

I was going to say, some people just learned the current rule. Now they want to go and change it.

Also, everyone is so edgy nowadays. People missing jokes and sarcasm all over the place.

It isn't that we are debating this particular rule... it is more along the lines of a redshirt discussion in general. I think last year or two years ago there was a huge discussion thread on redshirts and how they work and people pulling NCAA rules and debating... It was a bit crazy. Crete was the main person I remember in the thread.

A couple years ago... And I was a in the middle of it... Agitating and schooling 'Crete on redshirts... He would NOT relent and finally Ox spoke up and told 'Crete he was embarrassing himself. Ahhhhh.... Good times...

I like it but I would like for those that are not injured to have the same rules.

Is currently the rule for a medical redshirt. They just want to make it for all redshirts. Personally I don't like it. Now if they made them eligible for the bowl game that's different. I they should do that.

No, this is a complete rule change: they can play in 4 games (game 1, game 5, game 6, game 11, for example). As long as they don't play in 5 games they can redshirt. See the last paragraph that is bolded (in the original post).
