Hell or High Water - it's ok if nothing better to do, but nothing special. Story is a little more complicated than two brothers robbing banks to save a farm, but not much more complicated. If you have the time to watch it and nothing else better it is ok. Has some humor, but not a lot. Same story where 1 brother is cool and the other is a hot head that gets them into trouble. Bridges plays the role where he stumbles around and talks likes he's drunk all the time that always gets him nominated for awards because he's not really drunk. Basically it was a close portrayal to how he played Rooster in True Grit, but in modern times and sober.

Jack Reacher -Never go see. Fvkg horrible. About 30 times during this movie I thought it couldn't possibly get any stupider, and I was wrong every time. How they cast maverick to play this role is beyond me. Reacher, in the novels, is a HUGE man. His size is his most distinguishing feature. Cruise is about 5'8". The chick was probably taller than him. The entire Army depiction was so bizarrely inaccurate it might as well have been set on another planet.

Sully. Pretty good flick. The NTSB characters didn't exist like that. They were caricatures designed to show how every move the crew made was second guessed and put under a microscope. This is how all investigations are. Even if you know you did the right thing, the stress of having all of your decisions analyzed like that is not comfortable. The movie made it seem like he never left New York and they did the whole investigation is a week. The investigation took six months, even with all of the physical and electronic evidence readily available.

Unlike that incompetent asshat who got himself eaten by bears, if you ever get a chance to watch Alone in the Wilderness check it out. I don't think it streams anywhere, you either have to catch it on PBS or rent the DVD or something. True story of a man named Dick Proenneke (sp?) who buys a plot of remote land in Alaska and with only the most primitive, old-school hand tools, builds a full on house to live in. He gets an occasional resupply by bush plane and I think he came out the first winter before his house was ready to live in, but regardless, the amount of work he did and the craftsmanship that went into it is remarkable. He also films and catalogs the flora and fauna of the area along the way as well. The whole thing is shot with old fashioned film by Dick himself who set up the camera on a tripod at various stages along the way.

Manchester By The Sea - It's an ok drama, that doesn't have much humor in it. Its almost 2 and a half hours long and it goes slow. Basically a guy with lots of emotional baggage (which is actually baggage I could understand) has to figure out what to do when his brother dies and he is declared guardian of his 16 year old nephew that he hasn't seen often for years. they bond, they cry, they fight etc. The kid is a normal kid really just interested in sports and trying to get laid. While the movie was ok, to me its not one I would watch again. Lots of flashbacks to keep track of as well. It's also another one of those Boston movies that show that most seem to hate their life there, drink a lot, fight a lot, and cuss a lot. As far as all the awards go it must have been a slow year for this to get so many nominations as there is nothing special about any of these performances.

Arrival - another oscar bait movie that saying you've seen it once is enough. Not one i would buy for continued viewing. It however goes pretty quick for a two hour movie. Have to pay attention to this one as there is also lots of flashbacks that lead to the big reveal at the end. At the end though it is still just your typical nice aliens come to earth, certain countries get antsy and want to kill them, until someone shows them that is not the answer. Outside of the somewhat reveal at the end you've seen a version of this before.

That's 3 low par best picture nominees I've seen this week. Must have been a very slow year for these to be chosen as nominees as none have rewatch value in my opinion and they have no political message that I can tell.

Moana - watched with my son. It's your standard disney flick. Princess is bored in life, something happens, they sing, they dance, she saves the day. Not a bad movie, but not one of their best either. Enjoyed the last couple before this more.

Here's a teaser for Alone in the Wilderness.

I have fallen asleep watching that show so many times I can't count em. My wife and I love it.
Once he moved out there he never moved back until the end of his life. I think he spent like 30 years out there, by himself. I believe he was in a bad relationship which got him out there in the first place. I guess maybe Nav can relate.
More details:
Richard Louis "Dick" Proenneke (May 4, 1916 – April 20, 2003) was a self-educated naturalist who lived alone for nearly thirty years in the mountains of Alaska in a log cabin he had constructed by hand near the shore of Twin Lakes. Proenneke hunted, fished, raised and gathered his own food, and also had supplies flown in occasionally. He documented his activities in journals and on film, and also recorded valuable meteorological and natural data.[1] The journals and film were later used by others to write books and produce documentaries about his time in the wilderness.
In 1999, at age 82, Proenneke returned to civilization and lived the remainder of his life with his brother Raymond "Jake" Proenneke in Hemet, California. He died of a stroke April 20, 2003, at the age of 86. He left his cabin to the National Park Service, and it remains a popular visitor attraction in the still-remote Twin Lakes region of Lake Clark National Park.

The Shallows - always had a soft spot for shark movies since seeing Jaws when i was young, plus blake lively is smokin. It ain't jaws, but better than the majority of shark movies since. the CGI is very bad at a few points and the ending is a little dumb, but not bad for an hour and a half movie that feels like it moves quicker. This is strictly a popcorn flick and shouldn't expect award quality show. the story is somewhat believable in how it all happens and you will find yourself rooting for a stupid bird.

Not sure if already posted, but the movie Downfall just came out on Netflix. This is the Hitler movie that always gets used for those funny YouTube videos where he loses his mind in the bunker. It's a great flick, subtitled of course. Shows what the final days of the war were like for der fuhrer and those around him as well as the people in Berlin.

One Million AC/DC
1969 Ed Wood
Any movie written by Ed Wood you know is going to be good.
Synopsis :A group of sex-crazed cave people are being harassed by a Tyrannosaurus Rex. While they try to figure out a way to deal with this threat, they have sex and eat a lot.
Review: .... It is just an hour and twenty minutes of pure sex and orgies and not enough monsters. I mean the monsters don't get enough screen time. I know that this film contains scenes from "One Million B.C" (1940), but they don't get enough screen time. Now the film's plot is hard to follow because all the scenes are taken up by all the sex with these skinny women. It is about the day in the life of primeval times where man must fight this one T-Rex, where the characteristics change from a plastic toy to a cheesy puppet that was used in "The Mighty Gorga". Speaking of gorilla's, a woman gets raped by an ape. If the that stuff can be released on DVD, then why not "Ingagi" (1930). In a nutshell, I can describe this movies as follows: Crap crap crap crap. Wow, they spoke profanity back then? Crap crap crap. Whoa monsters! Crap crap crap crap crap. That was random. Crap. Yeah the F-word, the three lettered A-word and the four lettered H-word is spoken. The film's plot is a far cry from "One Million B.C."

Joe Bob says "Check it out".

Girl on a train - my wife wanted to watch this one. two hours I will never get back in life. Surprise, as with most the movies this year, there are tons of flashbacks. Almost the whole first half of the movie is flashbacks for the different characters. The second half is much better when the mystery begins, finally, but still nothing special. One girl has lots of sex. One girl drinks a lots. The last girl is just a housewife that doesn't do much. The mystery will be figured out pretty quickly if you pay attention.

Hacksaw Ridge: Was okay as a movie. First half was the guys backstory and trying to not get drummed out of the service for not wanting to carry a gun. I think I dozed off a couple of times. Second half had action but then it's mostly him lowering injured down a cliff while trying not to get shot. Admittedly the battle scenes are pretty good especially if you like flame throwin'. As commendable and admirable as the heroism was it wasn't that interesting of a plot.

Dr Strange: It was okay. I guess it's the Marvel backstory of Dr. Strange. Brilliant surgeon, car accident injures hands, seeks cure, finds mystics defending the earth from the 4th dimension, learns the wax-on, wax-off arts. I liked him better has a hot-shot surgeon than defender of this dimension. Really, I kept hoping he'd go back to being a playboy surgeon. I'm a fan of most of the superhero movies but this one wan't my favorite. Another 3/5.

The Infiltrator: Heisenberg goes after drug cartel accountants wasn't bad.

Nice Guys: This movie has flown under the radar but it was worth the watch. A couple of private eyes investigate the death of a porn star. Set in the 70's. Humor, nudity, guns, drugs. It has it all.

BTW. Don't trust the advice from anyone who uses the word "film" instead of "movie".
