On a separate but related note regarding buffering if you're using wifi, for Christmas, Santa brought me an Orbi with two satellites, we dumped all the wireless routers/extenders, and we have had rock solid, practically zero loss of speed, NO BUFFERING, wireless coverage of every sq inch of 3100 sq ft. I cannot believe I didn't do this sooner. I looked at all the new mesh/meshlike network options out there. Not saying Orbi is the best, but it's been phenomenal. Oh, and only ONE SSID for the entire house now.

I've been looking at the Orbi. Right now we have the Nighthawk X10 and it didn't come close to covering our full house so we have 3 range extenders as well. It really annoying because my phone does not switch easily between our range extenders.

Most reviews I read said the one thing mesh routers sacrifice is speed. They just don't compete with the multi band MIMO routers.

I just wonder how many Orbi's I would need for 4800 sq ft and if they penetrate outside.

Orbi doesn't lose speed because base communicates with satellites on a separate, direct channel. It's been AMAZING even with 2 Netflix and a PS4 running at the same time and NO switch/call drops when moving. Depending on your physical layout, you might be able to do it with 2 satellites like me, 3 would definitely cover every corner. Setup was CRAZY EASY and went just like the video on YouTube showed. I HATED all the router/extender crap and it's GONE.

I've had PSVue since early fall. Zero buffering issues.

My biggest issue with it is no local channels except Fox.

That's good. Then you can watch something not buffering on a portion of the screen. :)
Seems to me it's mostly you and some random people on a message board are the few that have that problem.
Everyone I've talked to that actually uses it doesn't seem to have that issue.
Perhaps it's not the streaming connection but something else that is causing it, and for a small portion of the users. :dunno:

I wonder if it's not the streaming devices themselves that are the issue.

If I recall correctly, GatorJ switched to Amazon Fire TV box.

The friend I spoke about earlier uses the PS4.

Now that it's on AppleTV, I use appletv in my room and a FireTV box in my livingroom. What I like about AppleTV is that I can use pretty much any remote. So it works well for my room.

FireTV has 4K and I can use Kodi. There's virtually nothing that I can't watch.

I can stream from my phones to either box if needed.

Was that the same day that a bunch of different things went down? Like with Amazon's servers or something like that?

Read the Amazon reviews on Orbi if you haven't already. There are always some kooks but Amazon usually has good reviews.
Yeah, i read the reviews for all the mesh systems ad nausum, pulled the trigger on the Orbi, and have had zero problems and a happy family, so I'd say success. Not knocking any of the others cuz I don't know, just know what's working for us.

My post was for G2 and his questions.

How well does the Orbi penetrate through your exterior walls?

I definitely need a rock solid network because I have a smart home with many things requiring a good connection. Hopefully it handles multiple network switches without problem.

I've glanced through them and the other mesh routers which is how I became more interested in the Orbi over the competition. The problem with Amazon reviews is their subjective nature. You have no idea the level of expertise or background of the commenter. Someone might post they have "great speeds" with a router but is that just surfing the web or multiple gaming/video streams?

I hold my signal for about .2 miles, but you should read up and not go with me. No issues with handoff.

@G 2 Ignore my .2 miles comment (which is trued). FWIW, My house is two story, four sided brick. My Orbi and satellites are all inside. I can walk anywhere on my pool deck or around the outside of the house within about 50 feet and hold a Skype video call.

PS4's updated today to software version 4.50, which will now allow for external hard drive storage of up to 8 TB's.

I cancelled my direct tv about a month ago and got sling. Works great for me. Got one of those hd antennas and got all the local channels out of Jax. Mostly all me and my family watch most of the time is Netflix. The only live tv I ever watch is the news and sports, mostly football and a couple of shows. Downside is no dvr, but sling has a cloud based dvr you can get for an extra fee, but I haven't done that yet. All in all I'm satisfied, and I'm saving like $70 a month.

Playstation Vue started something new last week, where you can watch three channels at the same time for the tournament.

Cool. Looks like with sling it's a $5 extra , so I'll probably get it. My bill will still only be $25 and it will rise to$30 in the fall when I add the sports package to have sec network and espnu. But still a lot cheaper than I was paying. Plus I can cancel anytime , no contract.
