So with nothing better to do I ran across an interesting story.

You may have seen this photo before but there's an interesting behind the scene story there.

Page's (or Bonham's) 24th birthday at a club in LA. Sitting to Plant's right is Sable Starr (16). The exotic looking girl on Bonham's left is Lori Maddox (14 or 15). Lori and Sable were friends and part of a crowd of minor aged girls known as the Baby Groupies. Page had seen Lori in a modeling magazine and requested her presence. Ahh to be a rock star. Lori says that he literally kidnapped her that night but she fell in love with him.

It wasn't Lori's first kidnapping though. A few moths earlier at the age of 14 she caught the eye of David Bowie at an LA club. She and Sable got whisked away by a limo driver/body guard to David Bowie's hotel suite. Though she had never been with a boy before she said Bowie was so sexy she gave in to his advances and they even invited Sable in for a threesome.

Sable Starr and Lori Maddox with Kieth Moon looking devilish as usual.

Page and his official girlfriend, Pamela Miller (Pam was the ripe old age of 21) at a party in LA. Page leaves with Lori Maddox though. Pam married guitarist Michael Des Barres a few years later so she is more well known as Pamela Des Barres the mother of all groupies.

Page kept Lori at his hotel suite where she lived for three years. Because of her age they had to keep it on the down low though. But Page liked Lori enough to ask her mom for approval.

Liv Tyler's mom (Bebe Buell) and dad.

What does Bebe Buell have to do with this? Well Lori was also friends with Bebe.

That's Bebe and the back of Lori's head.

Lori got Bebe an adjoining suite to hers just because they were besties. One night Lori walks in to find Bebe in bed with Jimmy. And that was the end of Lori and Jimmy.

They made a cute couple though

Watched a Youtube doc about them. Pam Des Barres traveled the country to catch up with the girls. Sweet Sweet Connie is still in Little Rock doing her act. At 60+ she's still plying her craft to get into concerts. And she's a riot. Lives in a little crappy house and has pictures on the walls of all the bands she serviced. "Blew him, f'd him, blew him." She's quite a character and I bet if you're ever in Little Rock you can look her up in the phone book and take her out for drinks and laughs. She's funny.
The picture above of Des Barres and Page was the night Page left her for Lori. She was left waiting for the Limo but he was gone and she hated Lori for years after until they reconciled for the documentary. They ended up being best friends.
Page left Lori the same way for Bebe. At a party he showed up with Lori then left with Bebe and Lori caught them in bed together at the hotel. Page was apparently quite the ladies man.
Elvira was a groupie before she became Elvira. But she says she didn't f most of them because she was so young.
Led Zep's "Going to California" was inspired by Michelle Oberman who Plant was having an affair with while he was married with a child. Michelle broke up with Plant and he was heartbroken and wanted to leave his wife in England for Michelle.
Spent my days with a woman unkind
Smoked my stuff and drank, all my wine
Made up my mind to make a new start
Going to California with an aching, in my heart

Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes
and flowers, in her hair

I've heard these groupies names over the years and just find it interesting that they are real people.

BTW the fictional Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) from Almost Famous was loosely based on the real life groupie Pennie Trumbull but I can't find any pics of her back in the day.

Interesting. I had always heard Going to California was about Joni Mitchell and Plant having this thing for her.

I'd have to dig to find a link to the story. If I recall correctly Michelle said that one of the other band members told her that it was "inspired" by her. For his part I think Plant claims it's just and amalgamation of girls. Years later, Michelle met up with Plant when he happened to be passing through her town and according to her he professed at that time that he wished they would have stayed together.

These girls are all in their 60's. Other than Pam Des Barres (she wrote a successful book "I'm With The Band". I don't think any live off their celebrity. Pam was also in an all girl band produced by Frank Zappa called the GTO's. I heard of them but don't think I ever heard a song by them.

More recent photo of (LtoR) Lori, Michelle, Robert and Pam. Looks like Michelle is the one pining for the old days.

Ah here. I ran across this from another source :

WW: I hear you were one of the flower children to inspire the lyrics for "Going to California:" Goin' to California with an achin' in my heart/ Someone told me there's a girl out there/ With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.

Michelle: That's what I was told. Jimmy Page told me that in London. He didn't want Robert and I to break up. He thought I was a good influence.

Sweet Connie in '93. I guess being from Arkansas it;s inevitable that she "knew" Bill Clinton.

Some interesting photos of Lori if you're into that kind of thing.

Iggy Pop?

The image says Bonham but I'm struck at how much Bonham looks like Mick Fleetwood

Led Zep's "Hot Dog"
"Now my baby's gone I don't know what to do
She took my love and walked right out the door
And if I ever find that girl I know one thing for sure
I'm gonna give her something like she never had before"

It's not Zep's best but it follows "Fool In The Rain" which is awesome. If you ever get a chance listen to Bonham's isolated drum track on youtube. It's amazing.

I just keep running across this stuff. I guess it safe to say that all these groupies think songs are about them.
Audrey Hamilton - never heard of here but I guess she was a thing back in the day. She has a daughter with Ace Frehley.

From some random Led Zep forum:

"Finally tracked down the famous "Hot Dog" Audrey Hamilton today. She was more than happy to answer my questions, and really made me feel at ease. Audrey told me she was 20 years young (not 17 as in the song) when she met one of the band's roadies at a Dallas nightclub....who would invite Audrey to meet the band at their hotel. When she met Robert at the hotel, the two hit it off immediately. She was invited to “go on the road” ('77 tour) by Robert... The "SS" hat pic was on a flight after the Chicago shows... The pics of her in the limo with Plant and Grant were from the Cincinnati show. She was with the band all the way through the tour... I asked what happened to the romance, and she told me that after that tour she began to date a close friend of Plant's (Bad Co. guitarist Mick Ralphs). This upset Robert (He wrote Hot Dog when he came back to Texas and discovered the affair)....She said they talked for a while in the 80's and she did confirm that "Hot Dog" was written for her."

I remember the "77 tour. They were to play in Tampa that June but my parents wouldn't let me go. My friend went but the show was cancelled because of lightning.
