Been wanting to do one of these for as long as I can remember so I finally took the plunge. It's nothing excessive but I am insanely proud of how it turned out.

R5 1600x at 3.9Ghz at 1.3v
16GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 (Clocked at 2933 due to BIOS Issues with Ryzen)
PNY GTX 1070 SLR8
Fractal Design Nano S

By travel do you mean traveling game machine?

Thinking about doing something similar for my son.

I chickened out.

Bought a refurbed HP w/ I7-6700, 12g dd4, from microcenter (nice, even smelled new, wrapped like new) and added a GTX 1050 ti. Just over 600 bucks. Doesn't look cool though. I may look at the motherboard and see if it's some goofy HP thing or a normal atx or something and give him a cool case. However, I don't think the 1050 is any faster than the 960 4gb he had previously. Will get a better card after the prices become less insane.

You're a damn pilot. I took one screw out and stuck a video card in the slot. It's not much harder than checking the oil. You weld truck beds to Blazer frames.

Crypto mining is killing gpu prices. Best bet is to look second hand for a lightly used card. I picked up a 2 month old 1080 for 400 bucks.

You should have built man.

I love my itx build but my main rig still gets used the most. Has an R7 1700 at 3.9 under a big ass dark Rock pro 3...6 intake fans in my h440 lol...

Parts would have been twice as much and I didn't have to assemble anything. I'm reasonably happy though it's weird that the 1050 which is performance wise about the same as our old 960 is about the same price as last year. The 1060 was almost twice as much and my other option was an old 730 in my ancient box that this is replacing.

I'm used to getting much more for my money a year later. I don't know what crypto mining is but every phase passes.

I'm happy though it won't impress anyone. I paid little more than the el cheapo Walmart boxes. I checked out the board, it looks like standard ATX, nothing weird. Now if I can just figure out the secure boot and install some ubuntu at least also.

crypto currency mining. Crypto currency has been going nuts lately. I'm too dang chicken to jump in, but I've kinda been keeping an eye on it. You've heard of bitcoins, right? That's a type of crypto currency. There are others, and some of the new ones are the ones on fire right now.

Yeah, I know what bitcoin is. I've had a few cases with it too. I just don't understand what the hell it has to do with GPUs. And I don't really care. I ride these things out.

It might be a bad time to buy a GPU but it's a great time to buy an AR lower. Timing is everything.

People are building mining machines would be my guess. Think in home server (like Hillary's email server ). Not quite, but that's the gist of it I think.
