Are you happy where you are? Suppose you didn't need to work, or you had a job where you could live anywhere you want. Where would it be? I suppose the world is a big place, lets limit it to the lower 48 states. Small town, big city, wherever. Lets hear it.

I'm moving to Denver at the end of the month.
The family has been out there for a little while and everyone loves it.
Lots of cool things to do both in the city and the surrounding Mountains.
Traffic doesn't suck too badly... yet.

Up until 2 yrs ago when the in-laws sold their hilltop acreage in the Finger Lakes area of NY (30 minutes south of Rochester), I thought we would land there when I retired from the CG. Beautiful lake view, plus the surrounding area... still hurts to think about it. Now, we're not sure. Maybe in the western Carolinas? Definitely not interested in big city life. Kinda depends on where the kids land after college, too.

Seems like everybody is moving to Denver.

Upstate New York is beautiful. I did a trip on my motorcycle thru the adirondaks many years ago and I still remember the scenery.

Never thought of NY as being a great place to be until my wife and I were dating. Fell in love with the countryside the first visit. Also, the drive up along the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania is gorgeous, too. Anyway, we don't have to worry about NY property taxes anymore. Losing the NY cabin might've been a blessing in disguise. Still miss it, though.

South Venice Fl. Good weather, few hurricanes, good location, no annoying rules.

Near to nice beaches and not too congested either.

Being a bit of a geography nut I often thought of this question. I never could settle on any one place year round...and I've been to all 50 states. I instead selected a location for each season of the year.
  1. Autumn: New England, any small town in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Blue sky days, crisp temperatures, low humidity and unbelievable colors of the changing foliage. Maine and Vermont are acceptable as well. Grew up in New England.
  2. Winter: Florida for obvious reasons and is my home now. But this is the toughest season to choose since I love winter sports as well. Small town in Montana east of the Continental Divide would be great.
  3. Spring: Carolinas. Winter moderates early and the azaleas come out. Prolly just east of Smokies when whitewater rivers run wild and full. Lived in SC for 4 years post-Navy.
  4. Summer: Port Townshend, Washington on the north end of the Olympic Peninsula. Winter and spring rains dissipate and blue sky breezy sailing weather prevails.

If it's the lower 48 states as stated in the OP and money is no object ...

1) Boulder
2) Santa Rosa
3) Maybe Asheville, maybe Roanoke
4) Maine would be kinda cool

I like temperate climate, though Maine is anything but that.

The Middle Keys. I'm a Florida boy and some of the best fishing in the world is at your fingertips. From skinny water to big game fishing. Never need to put on anything other than a tshirt, shorts and flip-flops.

Amen on Maine being cool. Dad was raised on a farm in northern Maine that bordered New Brunswick. As a boy (1920's) he saw it snow in Presque Isle on July 4th. Of course that's further north than Montreal.

Spent a summer month near Acadia National Park, sailing and swimming. Extraordinary beauty with granite shorelines, violent surf and moderate air temps. But Labrador Current flows that far south so water temp will wake u up in a heartbeat. Best lobsters in the world.

If we're talking lower 48, Asheville would be fantastic. I would do Savannah or Charleston, as well.

Anywhere in the world? Costa Rica, Iceland, and Ireland probably lead the charge.

Savannah is a cesspool. It's a cool place to visit, but you'd find out quickly it's like a mini version of New Orleans as far as the crime and filth. I worked over there for about a year.
