First, I want to say that this is not a defense of Franks or meant to be. I do think he does get unwarranted crap like half the stadium yelling "throw it" when he's in the middle of a fake hand off for a PA pass. I do think he's done plenty of dumb things like run out of bounds behind the line (Driskel loved doing this as well if I remember right), not put touch on some of his passes (like his to non-end zone picks, though the first one should have been caught in the UT game), and escaping the pocket when he doesn't have to (unfortunately, he has happy feet because our line is still poor in the pass blocking department at times).

Anyways, main point. I find it odd that I've not seen an article or heard a WRUF personality mention anything about Franks' performance being hindered by the loss of Cleveland (pretty much) and Toney for the A&M game. With them out we ran less screen and other staples. I point this out because the same people neglecting this are the same people that are saying that Mac/Nuss should not be judged because of injuries/suspensions. The same people are trying to pin everything on Franks (again, he hasn't helped himself, but I am not sure how much better Tebow would be in this offense, I mean, better yes, but that's not the point).

These are the same people who defended Driskel at every turn, these are the same people that defended Brantley at every turn (anyone remember the article GatorSports put out talking about how Brantley may push Flacco for time in Baltimore? I can't find it anymore, but I remember laughing at it), and then made excuses for every bad play LDR had. Sorry, I don't buy that an injury is the reason you throw across your body into triple coverage 20 yards down the field against UGA.

Do you think now, it is about protecting a narrative that the coaches are fine and it's all the player's fault? Or am I just reading too much into it?

Again, I don't think Franks is the guy, I do think at least a substantial portion of his poor performance is coaching and to judge the two separately is ridiculous.

Sorry for being so long.

I think Franks would've had a better game with Cleveland playing for sure. Cleveland can catch the 50/50 balls that Swain and Hammond could not. Franks throws a very good deep ball. Unfortunately there's only one good WR that we know of that can beat coverage to catch them.

Agreed, but notice as well, there is no talk about the ball Hammond should have had, but was interfered with before the ball got there and should have caught. Just like there was no talk of Massey and Toney's drops at UT while touting the "only one completion passed 10 yards" meme. Which, coincidently, LDR did the next week, only one completion passed 10 yards against UK.

I definitely think the loss of Cleveland and Toney hurts Franks. The loss of Callaway as well since he was the one WR who could almost always get open.

That said... the biggest problem Franks has is that he stares down WRs and doesn't survey the field, so the only place this really matters is when they are the primary WR.

ATX while I agree Franks stares down his receivers, I wonder if that is a product that there are only a couple of receivers that actually run accurate well timed routes. If they are the only ones he can trust.

I haven't seen/heard anyone address why Tyrie was on the field Saturday. He is listed on the Official Participation report.

I don't buy that. If you look at most of Franks' passes, there was at least 1 person that was running wide open somewhere on the field. Of course a defense can leave a guy free if they are watching the eyes of a QB that never takes his eyes off his primary target. I'm kinda starting to think the offensive scheme isn't that bad, there just isn't anyone to run it. Before you run me out of here for defending the coaching staff, they have plenty of blame for not finding someone to run their offence in 3 years, not coaching the QB up enough, not making adjustments, running too much on second down, etc, etc.

I agree that Franks struggles to see the field. He's a freshmen that needs time to develop (and good coaches to develop him). I think he does throw a pretty accurate/catchable deep ball when he throws it, and right now, only Cleveland can has caught a deep ball from him while covered. Both Hammond and Swain missed balls that a really good WR would have caught.

Franks stares down a single receiver making it a piece of cake for the D backfield. Here's a thought: Why doesn't our QB coach (do we have one other than Nussie?) run thru the 5 seconds in the pocket with Franks again and again and again and practice checkdowns to secondary/tertiary receivers. Do it 100 reps. 200. 300. Think a good QB coach could teach 5 seconds of pocket presence to the kid this year? He clearly hasn't been drilled on this skill. It's a doable thing and we have a bye week. If Franks "gets it" for pocket presence he will be 100% more valuable to this team and we may just win a game or two that we would otherwise lose.

I'm far more in this camp and have more openness to Franks eventually turning out well, but currently being hindered by overall team coaching more than vice versa. It's been stated ad nauseum, but look at Nuss's track record. Franks lack of production is consistent with Nuss's history. That pattern for now seems the greater problem than Franks, who I'm still giving some benefit of the doubt.

Does he miss some open guys, yes. But, the idea that receivers are constantly running around open in this offense is something I am just not seeing on tv or at the games. Again, are there examples of those plays - yes. But I disagree with posters that believe it is a frequent occurrence.

Plenty of coaching staffs out there could make Franks look better than our has, no doubt. If Franks is having trouble seeing the whole field, then simply the playbook for him. Another thing is Franks seems to be more mobile than many believed, so why don't the coaches call some RPO plays for him, just a few times a game. He seems to have decent accuracy (63.8%), we just need more production out of him, and the coaches are paid plenty of $$$ to figure that part out.

The kid is more accurate that what we expected.... seems more like a lost opportunity by the staff that Franks is holding them back.

I am not sure how good or bad Franks actually is. He is a freshman; a redshirt, yes, but Mac did nothing to develop him last year. I advocated giving him playing time last year to help bring him along, but many others on this board said no no no, don't burn his redshirt. There is no substitution for experience in playing qb at this level, but Felipe came into this season with zero game experience thanks to the geniuses on our coaching staff. So please, don't pile on Felipe He was put in a no-win situation by Butters and Nuss.

I really don't know how the gameplan could have changed, just because Toney is out. Why are they not using Massey in the exact same role?

My thoughts exactly. According to Mac, Massey was supposed to be a big part of our offense last year but got hurt on the first kick of the first game. All that planning, and scheming to get him the ball all the sudden got thrown away and forgotten about because of his injury? What's so damn hard about plugging Massey into the same plans for Toney now that he's hurt? I swear these coaches make kindergarten decisions seem like rocket surgery. It ain't that dang hard you idiots! Sheeshhh...

The one constant in our woeful QB play is the coaching staff. Haven’t we trotted enough guys out there over the past 3 seasons to understand that?

Swain had what would have been a key third down conversion in the first half bounce off his chest.
