But we didn't buy in a few years, we bought in todays market.. and in today's market he isn't worth $6 million a year.

But he’s locked in at $6 million per for 5 years.

Check back in a few months and see how many coaches who take a new job at significantly ($1 million plus) less than $6 million you’d strongly prefer over Mullen at UF.

Edit: And don’t say Chip Kelly, he clearly wasn’t interested in coming here.

$6 million over 6 years. With a $12 million dollar buy out. You are guessing other than so far Jimbo Fisher who got overpaid by Ta&m and Gundy who just got a raise to $5 million and was the person (reportedly) above Mullen on our list. I think you have some wishful thinking.

What rank of coach out of the 130 NCAA coaches would you give Mullen right now... and we will see if he is paid accordingly.

So to make a long story short according to this articles "analysis" we can expect to go another 10 years without ever seeing a down field passing attack. Mullen passes to run. [Yawn] Translation: if we get behind more than 10 points we're screwed. Got it. Thanks Stricklin.

You didnt know that everything that has happened in the past at Miss State will happen here too?

set all time futility records
I thought they didn't start keeping futility records 'til McDeath got here.

they were not as terrible as UF even if they had fewer yards per game.
... I'm betting firing McDeath was to escape most horrid be what may afterwards.

when Nebraska fired Riley, that took him off the board.
... don't see why, when going to HC Nebraska does not fit in anybody's ambitious portfolio. Esp NFL hopes.

Well, I think everybody and their brother thought it was Chip Kelly. And to be fair, the guy's a good offensive mind, just that there's this problem with him being a certifiable nut job (or so he presented himself IMO). The others that looked to be readily attainable, Frost, Norvell, etc., were flashy, but unproven. Taggart? Other than recruiting prowess, not sure what he could bring if he were really available to us. Strong? Great guy, but could we get him and if so, could he put us where we want to be?

It's easy to forecast "8+ boring years of UGA football," but if we get the defense back up to speed by UF standards (and I think we have a good chance to do this maybe easier and quicker than on the other side of the ball), I believe our chances with Mullen improve. We didn't get to where we are overnight and I don't believe we're getting back to the top shortly. We're going to have see if Mullen can first instill some toughness and "want to" along with a more functional offense and, as mentioned, a D that can lock it down. Offense is a little more of a mystery, perhaps, but I want to see what he does with better personnel than ran it at MSU before I cancel Christmas. What he does with the recruiting piece, which you and I have differing opinions on, will be what elevates him or keeps him middling.

Traz, they're using that as their bottom line not their high aspirations.

I know what you meant :). Let's see what he can muster here at UF before we write him off, from both a recruiting and offensive scheme standpoint. We all can can argue about "what if's" on both sides from now on based on our opinions.

We've got to start somewhere. Again, not a splash, but a solid hire. I'm not joining a Scott Stricklin Conspiracy Theory just yet. I just want to know who the Saban/Meyer clone is that we should have got?

Zactly Cover. Nobody has or can (really) factor in these "rushing waters" confluences:

1) The prestige of the overall UF experience.(degree, student body IQ,business connects, best O&B colors, etc, etc
2) Sitting in the "hotbed" of best athlete-recruits.
3) An HC returned to his locus of pinnaculous performance.
4) The gelling of all these new, improved: coordinators, assistants, real S&C guide,??
5) Genuine developers of skills.
6) Instillers of "on-field" decision imprints, "early-on"confidence builders, fire-lighters, etc?
7) Fully meaningful practices each week (for a drastic change).
8) Not having players wasting time cleaning BBQ-sauce off their cleats.

Oh I know these FB-kids don't care about academic prestige or even going to class so let this "game-film" convey the concept:

Per the LA Times, Kelly signed a 5-year, $23.3m contract. That’s $4.66m/year. Once you factor in state taxes it’s effectively $4.123m/year. The cost of living multiplier between Gainesville and LA at bankrate.com is 145%, or 1.45 Times whatever you’re making in Gainesville. Apples to apples, he signed for the equivalent of $2.85m in Gainesville dollars.

That would seem to suggest that there’s a lot more to the Gators passing on him than “Kelly chose UCLA over UF” to this. Something broke down during that final meeting.

Frost to Nebraska seems imminent - he’s going home.

Fellas, our schedule is CRAP. The SEC East is a joke, and the whole conference is down in general. Ten wins on a regular basis should be a cinch for a competent coaching staff at Florida, at least during this era. I think everyone predicting we'll win 8 games every year under Mullen is ridiculous. It was a lot tougher 10 years ago, but not now.

Honestly, 10 wins should be the permanent benchmark here - anything below that is an unacceptable season.

Too many fans are now comfortable with good, but not great. We fired MAC for being a 9/10 win coach, but it's ok if that is what Mullen is.

FIFY - The Zooker never won more than 8 at UF.

It’s true that many on this board were upset with 10-win seasons under Mac because they didn’t see us growing competitive against elite competition. As I heard one pundit put it, Mac’s 10 wins were a lot different than Harbaugh’s in terms of the strength and depth of the program.

I’m not going to be satisfied unless Mullen is able to bring us back to the championship level we were at during his time on Meyer’s staff. I don’t mean I need to see 2 NC’s in 3 years and a Heisman in between. We were a blocked FG vs SC away from missing any shot at the NC in 2006, and had other close games as well.

But I do want to see Atlanta as the norm and winning some SEC championships. That would vault UF to the playoff and we’d have our shots. I want us to play hard & fast and score lots of points. I don’t personally care if we have a high-flying air attack or great spread-based running attack that opens the passing game. I do care that we radically improve special teams and maintain the tradition of great defense.

I want our games to matter. A lot.

If all he does is install some plays where the receivers are designed to get open, we'll win at least one or two more games a year. If he can get an effective S&C program and a good ST coordinator, we just might be onto something.

There's a 0% chance it's as bad or worse than it has been the last few years IMO.
