All it does is add an extra game on top of the 4 team playoff. Play in 2 weeks after the Conference Championships and then the 4 team playoff goes on as slated on January 1st. So we would have this year, Clemson, Bama, Okla, UGA, OSU, Wisc, USC, and UCF or whoever else there as the final team.

DISCUSS and DEBATE till the cows come home!!

Not sure as there will always be controversy but I think its a joke Bama got in on their past reputation.

Esophageal spasms aside, I think the committee made the correct call. UA is better, eye test wise. Picking them is a pick to see a good football game vs. the probability of seeing a bad one. Football fan picks Bama to go.

You think OSU is a better team?

Fvkk no. Most of the #4 teams have no legitimate claim to being NC. This year neither did. Should have sent UCF. At least they were undefeated and champions.

6 team playoff.

Reward 1 & 2 with a bye.

Seed 3 - 6 and play at the better seed’s home stadium.

First round winners play 1 & 2 at their homes.

Final 2 remaining teams play neutral site championship.

This way you reward and protect the teams that had the best regular seasons.

Fans won’t have to travel to multiple expensive neutral site games in a short time.

The stadiums will be packed. The only team playing an extra game (over the current system) would be if a 3 - 6 team makes the championship game. So if the seeds hold, nobody plays an extra game. If the seeds don’t hold, a maximum of 2 teams play an extra game.

6 teams is plenty. If you aren’t in the top 6, you don’t deserve a shot.

No we don’t. It solves nothing, the #9 seed would gripe about being left out, and would certainly have their fair points as to why they got shorted...just like the #5 seed does in the current system. If it goes to 8 teams, I might as well just watch games on Sunday...it will be pretty much the same damn thing.

The committee couldn't be more disappointing. Two years in a row, they've chosen to ignore what actually happened on the field and instead rewarded teams that failed during the regular season. As long as they continue to insist on using "best team" as a criteria, they will continue to put their arrogance (we know who's best regardless of what actually took place) over simply rewarding the teams that got it done. Bama should not be in, just like OSU shouldn't have been in last year. Neither team even made it to their respective conference title games because they lost the game that mattered most. Very sad that none of that matters anymore and instead we're just going to put the teams with the most draft picks in the playoff even though they failed during the season.

if only we had a merge mod to merge this into the other thread about this.

This is partly why I was never in favor of a playoff to begin with. I’m not sure either Bama or Ohio St. deserve to be in and finding 2 worthy teams to play for the NC is easier than finding 4, IMO.

It won't be intruiging until the field becomes large enough to imagine a Cinderella taking it all.

Maybe right now. Bama didn't look good against Auburn or Miss State.
Georgia didn't look good against Auburn in the regular season either.

Completely agree. Unfortunately, that ship has sailed.

It's too obvious. Clearly 5 champs plus 3 at large is the only way it makes sense. 3 at large this year would have been Bama, Wisc, and toss the group of 5 a bone with UCF getting to the party as the 8 seed.

Here's my take and I've been saying this for years:

There needs to be an 11 team playoff, conference championship winners only. Plain and simple, no matter what your record is or where you are ranked, if you do not win your conference championship you do not play in the playoff.

Each conference needs to have a conference championship. The winners of the championship are invited. Those teams will be seeded according to their ranking. Teams 1-5 receive 1st round bye. Teams 6-11 play week after conference championship. Remaining games will be played in lower bowls. Semi-finals and finals will be played as currently identified.

So if we used that format, the following would be in:
American Athletic Conference - UCF
ACC - Clemson
Big 12 - Oklahoma
Big 10 - OSU #5
Conference USA - Florida Atl
Independents - No conference champ (most likely Notre Dame)
Mid-American - Toledo
Mountain West - Boise St
Pac-12 - USCw
SEC - UGAly
Sun Belt - No conference champ (Co-Champs Troy and App St, pick one)

You discredit your argument when you say that a team must win their conference to get in and then you let ND in without winning a conference.

They would get in every year as the Indy.

What would keep fsu from joining cusa and getting an auto berth every year. That is something they would pull.

Sorry, lesser conferences do not deserve auto bid into any playoff with less than 32 teams. 32 will never happen. Needs to be 8 teams. 5 champions and 3 at large. Lesser conferences get in as at large.
