That should be grounds for canning the AD.

ASU wants Billy Napier to become the head coach, but they know that after just 1 year as the full time OC, he is not ready. They bring in Herm for a few years, he goes full Bobby Bowden on them in that he is the face of the program and CEO-type, while Napier learns from him how to run the program, and Napier is left alone to run the offense and Phil Bennet is pretty much left alone to run the defense.

They are actually hiring a guy to train the guy who they want to hire, but know is not ready.

Sumlin would inherit a QB who has Manziel’s skill set with zero of his idiotic baggage. That would be fun in a league that plays no defense.

My oldest son played at Furman with Billy.

This would be a fantastic hire for UCF. He'd walk right into a team with 18 returning starters who are used to an offense not unlike what he likes to run.

He’s also not building UCF up. He’s following a guy who went 12-0 and left for a bigger job. UCF also had quite a bit of success not too long ago before the winless season a few years back.

That's the biggest issue I see for any UCF hire. Who wants to follow this season? The only way to go is down. You get no credit for building it, and all the credit for however many games you lose. Best bet for UCF is probably a coordinator promotion, or an old disgraced coach (a ala O'Leary) - Kiffin probably wishes he could've landed at UCF instead of FAU. Maybe Freeze will go there (if he is even allowed, not sure how those show causes work). Anyway, I think Sumlin can, and will, do much better. It's not like he completely $%*^ the bed at Atm like Strong did at UT - overall he's a competent coach and can do better for sure.

They are never getting in the big 12.

Never is a long time, but they struggle to fill a 45k stadium that needs $10m in repairs. I could see them eventually becoming attractive to some P5 conference but they have to be much stronger with attendance & alumni support.

BTW they beat #24 Bama in hoops yesterday - in Tuscaloosa.

@joshnewberg247: I'm hearing Kevin Sumlin is slow playing the UCF job to see what happens in Oregon today/tomorrow.

@Ry_Bass: Source familiar with the search process tells me #UCF has finalized the paperwork with a new head coach. Announcement coming.

This gives me the feeling it's their current OC who chose not to go to Nebraska with Frost. That or it's gas.

Shannon to UCF as DC?

Any truth to that?

It's getting crowded in here. Lots of competition for recruits. Mullen is really going to have to work his ass off and hire really good recruiters.

Yes. The AD recommend it.
