Sorry, rather confusing post.

Basically, unless you've got a crystal ball a coaching pick is a crap shoot as to whether or not they are championship caliber. Sure, you can use an educated guess, but it's just that, a guess. The coaching ranks are littered with "can't miss" guys who floundered and "losers' who found the right formula and became winners. But as I said, we're at the same place having the same discussion we've been having since Mac was fired. Mullen was way down my list of candidates. I was dead set against him for many of the reasons you and others have stated. But when looking at the coaching landscape there were no can't miss guys available. As Strciklin said, the coaching pool was pretty much a puddle. It's obvious we never were going to get Kelly or Frost as has been mentioned numerous times.

"High ceiling" sounds good but that applies to a million guys. It's just another way of saying "he could be great, but he could also suck balls."

I've asked people on here forever to give me a name. Someone who we could actually have gotten that's significantly and quantifiably better.

We had weeks and weeks of a head start and end up with Dan Mullen.

This is the third time running I have heard the "well, who would have hired. He's the best hire out there".

Just say we settled. It's ok. We did.

Of course we settled. But who could have we hired? The only obvious one that jumps out is Kelly. We drug our feet - had plenty of time to close the deal and lost out.

But other than him, who?

Jesus? Knute Rockne? My point is that the hyperbole with some people about Mullen is so over the top that it makes us look like we are trying to justify the hire.

Agreed that a Kelly deal should've been in place ASAP once Mac was fired. Strick allowed himself to be strung along and it was a rookie mistake.

I hope he does well but I'm a firm believer in the whole you are what your record says you are.

I think most people are reasonable. Some people are being over optimistic. And you’re being an overbearing pessimist. Both extremes are ridiculous.

This is spot on.... instead of picking the "high ceiling" long shot, we chose the steady High Floor Safe Bet. Guy's gonna win us a Natty in about seven seasons... Book it!

Chip played us and we ended up getting the best coach who wanted to be here

Mullen got the job because he fervently wanted to return UF to national contenders.
MSU is the "on-deck" circle; nobody hits home runs from the on-deck circle.
IMO GatorNation will enjoy watching Mullen rebuild our program, starting with us watching better use, better performance by the athletes that were operating in the inoperable McNuss system.

I really wish Mullen would leave this guy alone, he is going to UGA and we have a Qb who has been nothing but all Gator and he should focus on him not Fields. I'll take any bet right now he don't end up at UF. Lifetime sig bet, loser can't post for a month or all football season, all my ox bucks you name anything reasonable other than real money and I'll take the bet. It's a waste of time and will end up costing us Corral.

I have to agree with this. Our focus should be on Corral, who has basically held this class together. He should lock Corral up and get him enrolled early, then go after a Juco or a lower ranked duel threat QB. If we miss out on Corral, and don't get Fields, that will be a major league blunder.
