Based upon posts on OSU sites/blogs the famly health issue seems to an illness of his mother's. There is also some speculation that a "hardship redshirt" may have already been in the works since he has missed games since September.....again speculation.

Here is part of an article off of 'bucknuts'

Trevon Grimes transfers to Florida, Ohio State loses former top receiver recruit: Buckeyes football news

Updated 1:29 PM; Posted 1:10 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State lost a former top-ranked recruit on Friday, as receiver Trevon Grimes announced that he is transferring to Florida.

A four-star recruit in the Class of 2017 who was ranked as the No. 41 overall player in his class and the sixth-best receiver prospect according to 247sports.com, Grimes left the Buckeyes in the middle of this season to attend to what Urban Meyer said were family issues in Florida.

Meyer later said Grimes was taking online classes, and Ohio State seemed to hold out some hope that he would come back to Columbus for the 2018 season. But the Fort Lauderdale native confirmed Friday that he would continue his college career with the Florida Gators and first-year coach Dan Mullen, who is one of Meyer's closest friends.

Gainesville is 330 miles from Fort Lauderdale. Columbus is 1,130 miles.

"I just felt like (Florida) fit for me. It's close to home. Of course, being in my situation that I'm in right now, I have to be close to home," Grimes told sun-sentinel.com.

No doubt. And great news. Mullen is already better than the last two a-holes. But, the comparison to Ugly’s sudden rise is a massive stretch. If Eddie gets us to 8-4/9-3 next year and improves each week, it’ll be a tremendous season. The current talent level overall sucks too much to compete with all the big boys next season.
UGA was 8-5 in Kirby's first year. Let's worry about 1st year comparisons. Personally, i'm not expecting great things until 2020.

You and gatorkev need to go find a dark corner and get under each other's wet blanket and make out.

Damn. We know how you guys feel about our situation. Most of us feel at least similarly. But..... every thread, every post, every word. Go tie the noose if that's all you have to contribute.

He and Jefferson won't count towards this class but Mullen out there doing work. Whatever our final ranking is will feel like a farce.
Absolutely true. Whatever our final ranking it's going to be under-ranked for sure. And not only because of the transfers, although they are a great addition.

You also have to consider the significance of the pick-ups, not just the stars. EJ is way more valuable than say two 5 star DB's, but will only count as one 4 star.

And how about some of our 3 stars? We absolutely needed to replace Eddy, so what did we do? Get one of the top place kickers in the class. Considering a kicker is going to be one of you leading scorers, that is 5 star value to our team but shows as a 3 star in the numbers and actually brings down our average but could be one of the key pieces of the class.

Then there's Chris Bleich. 3 star lineman? Maybe (scout actually lists him as 4*) but he's not 3 star because he is 250 lbs and we're hoping he can grow into SEC size, or 3 Star because he's a tubby giant who we're hoping the S&C program can make serviceable strength-wise by his Junior year. The kids 6-5 308 and literally probably the strongest Freshman lineman to ever enroll at UF. We'll have to wait and see how he pans out, but he has the size and strength to step in right now and not get pushed around. If that's what a 3 star tackle looks like these days, bring 'em on and sign up as many as you can find.

No worries on the noose. Not sure I have anything sturdy enough in the rafters to hold me long enough anyway.

You might want to slow your roll there. We don’t have near the talent stockpiled to suddenly be a playoff team just because of two WR transfers. That being said, still good news.

Point was that we’re doing way better than expected on the recruiting trail and having 2 top WRs transferring in, we have a good shot at posting a damn good record with next years schedule. Bama got in without playing in the SECCG. What if our only loss next year is to UGA? Or we could smash them like we have the majority of the games we’ve played over the last 25 years. Sorry, but I’m excited about Gator football again!

Wow, and that’s not taking into consideration those 2 already maturing and adding strength and size. If both are eligible next year with our schedule .... look out. We might be the 2018 version of this years Georgia.

Probably we will look more like Georgia 2016.

Did TJ McCoy have to sit out a year when he transferred from NC State for family hardship reasons?.

Loving the excitement around the program. Great save on the recruiting trail by the new HBC! Make Gator Nation great again.

TJ was classified as a senior in the 2015 class; he enrolled early at NC State in January of 2015. Went through spring practice there and then because of Tony's condition he transferred to UF. He was granted a hardship waiver and was eligible to play immediately but FloridaGators.com shows he redshirted in 2015. Maybe we'll get so lucky with Grimes.
