What in the ever loving **** is this world coming to?

I just went to Publix to get a 100W lightbulb, but unfortunately all they had was this:

20171231_140235.jpg

It's marketed as a 100W replacement bulb that only uses 72W, but when you read the fine print it has the same light output as a 72W bulb. So basically they just took a regular 72W incandescent bulb and stuck a 100W label on it. WTF.

After some googling I discovered that I've been living under a rock and there are new regulations mandating 28% energy savings. Apparently this was accomplished with some simple labeling trickery. So I guess I just need to find a 139W replacement bulb that is really just a re-labeled 100W bulb.

i still have my first led bulb i bought in 2009 or so.

It's not nearly as nice as the new ones and doesn't light up as well, it's only like 8 little leds. The new ones have more LEDs and much better reflectors.

I'm pretty sure it has replaced probably 15 bulbs in that time frame.

The new led bulbs are excellent and worth the premium price in having a much longer light, using much less energy for the amount of light produced and producing much less heat which, in Florida at least, must be countered with air conditioning most of the year. Even in areas with less cooling degree days, the heat produced by light bulbs is very inefficient, essentially "burning" electricity.

Another neat feature is that the led bulbs have a much wider range of color meaning that you can use a warmer or cooler bulb to get a particular effect.

I replaced several banks of HO 8 foot fluorescent bulbs in an outdoor sign about two years ago. I was able to obtain the replacement led bulbs drop-shipped from the manufacturer in China. Yes they cost twice the amount of the fluorescent but for those bulbs the cost of the bulbs themselves was dwarfed by install costs which required a bucket truck, etc. The leds are brighter, use much less electricity, do not require trouble-prone ballasts and will last several times as long.

The prices of the new TVs is amazingly low. I picked up a 55" TCL ROKU TV with 4K for under $400 at Walmart a few months ago.
Hell, you can get some major brands for near that price.

Im gonna guess you haven't bought ice cream lately. What used to be 2 qts is now 1.5 for the old price. Tuna used to be 6 oz and is now 5.

coffee instead of one lb is 12 oz or even 11 oz. But I know what Bernardo is about there. I want 100 watts or even 150 to be able to read my newspaper. The print is small and even lighter. Doonsbury print is tiny sometimes. Bright light allows me to read much easier. oh yeah, OJ comes in 48oz instead of 64oz

Selling food products in smaller sizes is a marketing strategy to maintain a perceived constant price point for a product while actually passing through a price increase.

As far as light bulbs, the Federal regulations that led to strange options and labeling are gone but some of these products still persist in the market.

But you should be buying light based on lumens not on watts. If you are used to the light from a 100 w incandescent bulb, you would get that light from 16-20 watts of an led bulb. 2600 lumens from a 150 w incandescent bulb would be produced from a 25-28 w led bulb. You couldn't even buy a 100 watt led bulb for home use as it would be so bright it would likely blind you.

Led bulbs have a rated life of some 50,000 hours, about 50 times that of an incandescent bulbs.

I was thinking just this but the OP indicated that the fine print said otherwise. I bet that bulb is the same light as an old 100W bulb. Traditional bulbs are now generally banned in the US, SAD.

The regulations that would have banned incandescent bulbs were ultimately repealed but not before some manufactures had already ceased production and/or changed their products like such as in the example provided by the OP.

You can buy long-life incandescent bulbs which are made with a thicker filament but they also produce less light.

Its 2018 bro. WTF are you doing buying incandescent light bulbs? Is it hard to see your 8-track player with an LED bulb?

Do yourself a favor and go through the house and find the dozen or so lightbulbs you use the most and replace them with LEDs. Your bill will be lower and you'll probably die before you have to replace them.

That is how we started doing it...replaced the ones we use the most.
Oh, and people don't have to buy the most expensive brand named ones...even the utilitech brand, or the like, is typically sufficient

The LED bulbs are a little larger for the same light output and they don't provide the same omnidirectional light.
