who knew I had a source?

was talking with a business associate who is "connected" to the program. word is that Mac told the administration that he was going to resign before the season started because he had been covering up the CC fraud, and they wouldn't let him. He also told them 2 days before the uga game that he wanted to resign, and again, they wouldn't accept it.

the only reason that I could think they wouldn't agree to that is because he was likely asking for his full buyout with the resignation, and they didn't want that. I'd see no other reason to keep him around after he admitted to trying to keep a lid on the CC fraud.

I think he on purposely tanked the season so they had to get rid of him, but that's almost like saying he's not as bad of a coach as he is, and I'm not sure I'm willing to do that.

This surprises me, and sources may not be that reliable. He is gone and hopefully the future is bright, it surely is a vast improvement.

I would have to think that if he admitted to covering up criminal activities the University could have tossed his belongings in a box and thrown him out on the street with no buy-out, severance, or otherwise. If @playzwtrux source is reliable, it almost makes the school look, at the least, negligent or, at the worst, conspiratorial. However, most of what McElwain accomplished during his tenure at UF was not positive, so nothing where he was concerned would surprise me. Nor would I be shocked if this was verified and Foley was the conductor.

Any CFB HC who purposely "directs" his coaches and players so they'll tank the season is the worst coach ever. Taking millions $ under false pretenses seems as fraudulent as CC crime. However, Mac's detached behavior sure looked like he was tanking.

I have to think if Mac tried to resign word would have trickled out before now. Still, the buyout that he got does lend a little weight to the story.

Fwiw I too heard he and many others were knee deep in covering up the CC fraud.

There's no way he could "cover it up" as the charges were filed and made public. If there was a "cover up" attempt maybe he tried to soften the blow a bit?

I said repeatedly last season that UF had a right to fire him "for cause" (and pay no buyout) due to the credit card thing. It was his program and he didn't control it.

Either way, he's gone and we're in better shape.

No, no. Trying to convince the university to hide the charges on the Gatorone cards, not the outside issues.

Second point, I heard the first time he "offered to resign" was when they demanded firing Nuss and Nord last spring. It was also characterized as a "if you fire them then you fire me" thing and ultimately "I'm the HC and if you don't trust my judgement on assistants then I should resign" (more or less).

I also heard that neither Oregon, Oregon State, nor Nebraska had any interest by he was certainly letting them know he was available.

I’m not saying that your source is not right – I just don’t know if they would have prevented him from resigning because they would have to pay for his buyout. If he resigned why would they be stuck with his buyout?

I find this hard to believe, but whether it's true or not, it is absolutely ridiculous that they paid him any portion of his buyout. A nickel is overpaying that lazy moron.

My biggest concern from the beginning is where the money came from to pay it back so quick. I hope this is behind us and the coaches had nothing to do with it.

The steaming heap of dung that was the previous regime (yeah, I also include Foley) continues to befoul our program and possibly our future. What a colossal mistake that hiring turned out to be. Whether JM actually aided and abetted the pack of thieves he assembled may never be known. A couple of things are certain - if he didn't know, he should have, and one way or the other he was guilty of gross negligence and richly deserved to be fired. I do question the buyout due the circumstances, but I strongly applaud the decision to terminate. I won't quibble about timing, I don't know enough to form a fact-based opinion. I'm just hopeful that the stench will fade and we can get back to being a clean, successful program during my lifetime.

Interesting take. I'm not sure Mac purposely tanked as much as his laissez faire approach allowed the program to get out of hand.

Several here noted his subdued demeanor and wondered if something was up. That could be the answer why.

This was a familiar sight during his last season. McElwain pacing the sidelines, arms folded, head down, unapproachable. In the end he was totally disengaged. He did not want to be here.

I would think a coach that resigns would forfeit the negotiating power during the buyout. Firing without cause (apparently, sucking at your job is not considered “cause” in the coaching profession) is what would’ve given mac the full buyout.

I recall everyone thought SOS was nuts for walking away from the skins after 2 years and forfeiting all that money instead of waiting to be fired just to grab the guaranteed money. He saw his Fun n Gun wasn’t working in the pros, which satisfied his curiosity, so he moved on. Not many coaches are like that and I think it speaks volumes about the HBC’s personal integrity and respect for the game.

It’s not uncommon for people to negotiate a resignation. I’ve known people who will give two weeks and then negotiate for various things to stay for 4 weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mac went in saying that he’d be willing to resign if they paid him a pro-rata buyout. He’s offering them an opportunity to cut ties with minimal scrutiny to the school. Instead he did what he did and really made a mess. If he had offered a resignation with a negotiated buyout, we’d been foolish to not negotiate it down and accept. Lot’s of if’s. But, negotiated resignations aren’t really rare.

Now one thing that would kind of make sense is that the administration may have known he was covering it up And he may have tried to quit. And because they did not let him, it may be the reason why they were stuck paying a buyout.

I’m pretty sure there is a non-disclosure
