Bear with me while I pull a stupid for a bit here. From the article:

1. Grimes and Jefferson count against 2018? Super stupid moment...would the 2018 class be who is signed in Feb of 2018, meaning the class we are signing RIGHT NOW? How can they possibly count against the current class unless it is referring to the 25/yr limit?

2. Grimes was 2017, and Jefferson was 2015. How much eligibility does each have once they can play for UF?

3. Been wanting to ask, but I'm assuming Justin Watkins is NOT related to Sammy and Jaylen Watkins?

4. The 4* kid we signed last year then didn't play due to heart problems is officially out of football, correct? I'm assuming the kid still can get some sort of hardship scholarship for an education but does not count against football and may open up another spot for an EE to count to last year. Is this even close to the reality?
They count against our initial counter limit for this year, the first year we give them aid.

So there is really a limit on new scholarships given (between Dec1 and May 31) and the initial counter rule for those first offered aid each fall term (catches grayshirts but also transfers).

Here is some help but it isn't indepth. http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...overhauling-college-football-recruiting-rules
This year our only limit is the 25 rule. (Or is it 28 - not clear on that). The other stuff isn’t an issue.

The 28 initial encounter rule was NCAA. The SEC took a more strict stance at 25. Which the NCAA later adopted.

However, EEs don’t count against that IF they are able to be counted against the previous class due to eligibility exhaustion or “withdrawal”.

For example, Bama signed 29 kids last year.

The max players you can have on your team is 85. So even though the yearly limit is 25, it cannot take you beyond the 85 limit. So if you have 70 returning scholarship players. You will not be able to sign more than 15 that year.

See the following link for a really good explanation.

This is probably why the visits got pushed back.

That...and there was only 2 or 3 scheduled. Those kids rescheduled, which is a good thing.

I'd like to know more about the Johnson kid from Georgia (who was just CB'd to us yesterday by 1 analyst). Came out of nowhere, and wasn't really on anyone's radar that we were recruiting him.

Yeah, I was watching his tape yesterday. He was dropping into coverage and picking off passes and then bullying anyone trying to block him when rushing the passer. He's listed at 6'3.5 and 250lbs but looks like he could put considerably more weight on his frame, looked like he needs to get stronger. He look pretty athletic with the ball in his hands too. He's only listed as a 3* but has some nice offers from UGA, Auburn, LSU, Miami, etc. Looks like he's set for an OV on 01/19.

Based on your description, he could possibly play LB in the 3-4 until he adds weight to shift to DE.

From SEC Country:

News & notes
  • Florida extended offers Thursday to JUCO defensive tackle Emmit Gooden and 5-star athlete Bru McCoy, a 2019 prospect. Gooden is ranked the nation’s No. 7 DT and No. 19 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite JUCO rankings, while McCoy checks in as the No. 1-ranked athlete and No. 11 overall recruit in the Class of 2019. Gooden was previously committed to Arkansas under Florida’s new assistant director of player personnel, E.K. Franks. The Gators are pushing to get him on campus for an official visit.
  • The Gators will host 3-star defensive Caleb Johnson for an official visit on Jan. 19. Johnson was offered by the previous staff and visited UF last spring. He officially visits Georgia this weekend.

Butters never had a full staff in place before signing day, handicapping his recruiting even further. The dude was completely incompetent. The more that comes out about this sh*t-show the more I want to smack Foley across his horse-tooth face!!

(from secccountry):

The Gators hired their 10th assistant Thursday, tabbing Mississippi State safeties coach Ron English for the same position. Mullen now has a full staff to recruit for the January contact period, something his predecessor never did.

Former Florida coach Jim McElwain was understaffed in 2015 (Kerry Dixon II), 2016 (Torrian Gray) and 2017 (Corey Bell, Brad Davis and Ja’Juan Seider). Not only is Mullen’s staff at capacity, but he has an extra assistant as well.

2018 receiver Geordon Porter (6-2, 180, Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Etiwanda) picked up an offer on Tuesday. Porter has already taken three official visits and visits Tennessee this weekend. Porter says he’s deciding on fifth visit between Florida, Texas A&M, Oregon State and Iowa State.

The 28 initial encounter rule was NCAA. The SEC took a more strict stance at 25. Which the NCAA later adopted.

What in the world are you talking about? The SEC never had an initial counter tougher than the NCAA initial counter rule. The NCAA initial counter rule was unlimited, then 30 and then 25 as the overall cap was reduced from 105, to 95 to 85. The NCAA initial counter limit has been 25 for at least a couple of decades.

The only thing the SEC did was not allow schools to sign over a certain limits. Signing have little to do with scholarships or initial counters. Before this silly rule teams sometimes signed some walkons to give the kids some publicity. The SEC's reason for this rule was programs signing guys they new would not qualify to hype up their imaginary classes.

About a week or so after signing day, grant in aid papers go out and that is when scholarships are inked. Signing day is just for national letters of intent. You can as is popular with top players in basketball sign a grant in aid and not sign a NLOI which is really a one way binding contract where the student athlete gives consideration without getting much.

Now this bring me to the reason for coming to this thread. I was wondering if Russell will be an initial counter, sign UF is likely never give him a grant in aid that counts against the 85 limit. As I typed and thought about this, I suspect than since Russell will never be on a grant in aid that counts against the 85 limit, that he will NOT be an initial counter, but that I guess depends on when they did this physical and whether he is on a grant in aid this semester and will get a DQ scholarship next semester.

Do we need a 3* WR in this class?
