As expected, Mullen plans to call plays. Some interesting insight into the process,

This is what worries me most about Mullen as the head coach. I've never been a huge fan of his playcalling. He gets a little too predictable and conservative when the game is on the line. He mostly gets away with it when he has a 240 lb QB, but I also don't like watching the QB take a lot of hits when it's a close game.

That said, if he wins championships, I won't complain. It's worked in the past, so hopefully it will work in the future.

This is what worries me most about Mullen as the head coach. I've never been a huge fan of his playcalling. He gets a little too predictable and conservative when the game is on the line.

My concern is that he lets the defense dictate the play, basically counting heads in the box. Of course, this begs defenses to disguise their blitzes and drop safeties into the box late to stop the run that they know is coming. Imagine if SOS refused to throw whenever there were the defense was 2 deep.

I won’t deny we’re going to see a healthy dose of running the ball. But I also think of critical moments against Ala and OU in 2008 where we threw deep down the sidelines to Murphy on the clinching drive, followed by a slant to Coop for the win. He also allowed an extremely unpolished passing FR to throw a deep TD with a small lead against Lsu.

To be clear, I know full well what we have. But I do think with the right talent, we will see some opening up at the right time as we did before. I also still think ‘07 & ‘08 get confused with 2009 and the Daz disaster.

As JDH commented in another thread I also like the vertical passing game. I mean....like post patterns on 4th and inches.

That said...we are going to run the ball. But I think we have the horses to make it exciting. I think our backs are going to move the chains.

And if you look at our new, improved roster we actually have play makers. I realize it looks like EJ is the future of our QB position, but in the mean time I think Mullen will put whoever best gets the ball consistently to those play makers. If it's Jones now, fine or Felipe with his act together or Allen, heck even Trask. I don't care, personally, just get it done and don't keep wasting time and talent. Sick of that.

Look, the playbook didn't change, or didn't change much. They actually did invert the whole playbook for Tebow early on, he took the power inside routes and Percy or another smurf took the outside, to play to their strengths. Switched it back mostly in 2009 bc Tebow was banged up and tried to pound the middle with Demps. Didn't work. Passing was much more effective in 2007 until the DCs figured out what Tebow could and could not throw. 2010.... whehhhh....

He will establish tendencies then break them at key moments, like faking a Tebow rush and having him throw that deep ball to David (Who?) Nelson, who hadn’t done ANYTHING before that play.

And while Meyer was clearly in charge, Mullen helped devise the game plan for OSU - every formation and personnel grouping was different from the season so OSU’s keys were all off.

He’s pretty sharp and will use the weapons at hand.

I'm sorry but that is silly. You don't do the same damn thing for most of the year in 2006 just to break tendencies vs OSU.

What he did was play very fvkking tight until we were the underdog then he opened it up. Was it Mullinz or Creyer. Who knows. Both did a bunch of the same thing. Creyer basically played tight as hell his OSU NC year then opened it up when he went with his 3rd string QB (more of a passer) and set the world on fire. I doubt they win that year with their first two QBs because they weren't that good and definitely couldn't pass as well.

We will see. Look he has been here before. He knows we want more offense and more passing. His wife commented on the demands. He has SOS down the hallway. Maybe we will see a little less ND and a little more passing and scoring.

Hear ! Hear ! Sir Theo ! DM is where he never wants a letdown, certainly not by his own hand. Stupid to think DM is a "one-trick dinosaur" of zero adjusting creativity, not pulled forward by the talents available like he's never had before.?? Many of us awaiting to see, not relying on nay-saying prejudging.

I feel it benefits DM well that he was here before. He knows exactly what he is getting into and the expectation on the play calling. If alone he just gets creative with the O, he'll do so much better than what we've seen in year. We all know what he is capable of with weapons. And also glad he listens to his coaches as well. It's obvious that MacNuss never listened to anyone unless it had to do with BBQ sauce or Shark Humping.

I didn’t say “just”. I was illustrating that he has shown he will adapt and adjust in game or in season or for a particular opponent. 2006 is a prime example - able to work with Leak, salting Tebow in, establishing him as a bulldozer that can drive LSU’s All-SEC safety 12 yards downfield, then the jump pass, then the rocker pass to Nelson.

Obviously that stellar defense and key special teams plays enabled them to win squeaker after squeaker - without style points. But then they romp against tOSU in large part because OSU was baffled by all the changes. And then, with Tebow full time, a Heisman season and NC follow.

He’s not as predictable as some suggest.

One faction is spicing up opinion-with-likelihood (validly) to predict that DM's HCism inculcates O-attacks that surprise defenses, yielding better results.
Others are 'spicing' up their opinion-with-lacklihood generic.??
Which forward-looking attitude is more likely to be attached (& required) for a championship run ? Which attitudinal opinion would Tebow or Emmitt Smith include in their locker-room pregame speech ? What this 2018 team needs is Go Gators -- heck, that's what we all need to knead.
