My friend always had good things to say about Steve. He would go out of his way to do kind things for the staff, knew everyone's name or nickname (that he gave them) and would joke and tease people in a good-natured way all the time. But just like any other top notch coach, there is an arrogance that is pernicious... just part of the character type.
I'm sorry I met with respect to his interactions w Foole.

Yes, I agree SOS was nice to the staff. So was Fooley for that matter. Hell he stopped, sat and chatted every time he saw me and my friend at the student union at the tables outside of law school.

He kept smart for years and paid him record breaking salaries.

He demoted Chimp, invited Nusschump to leave, let Butters go to the WAC and didnt offer the OC (or position coach) coach it was open this year. Didnt fight to keep Pruitt this year.

Yeah, I think we can use his assessments pretty reliably.
You denigrated Smart variously in other threads. Now we're supposed to think he's the cream of the crop?

His record suggests he feels just the opposite but, unlike Muschamp, is willing to avoid over-meddling in the offense.

I'm pretty sure SOS liked stopping people, which is why he hired Bobby Stoops.

Offensive and defensive guys may not always see eye to eye, but the (no pun) smart ones know they need each other.

Yeah, the crappy one that ended in the national championship game.
A loss is a loss.

They just got lucky and didnt play Bammer in Atlanta.

No ome with any sense fears a Jim Chaney offense or any coach who would hire him to run their offense.

You're cracking me up. I have more hate for Georgia in my left leg than you do in your entire body. I survived Fourth & Dumb and Run Lindsey Run. The phucks always found a way to weasel by superior Florida teams in my era.

They damn near won that January showdown with Bama. I'm not gonna play stupid for pride's sake and say there's nothing good going on in Athens. We have to find a way to counter what they're doing.

32nd in total offense and sixth in defense.

Remember what we used to say about Muschamp's offense only needing to get "this much" better? His buddy has done it.

Anyone who answered Muschamp should be banned.

The OP said we could use 20/20 hindsight, right?

First choice: Convince Meyer to take one, maybe even 2 years off, and the come back. Go do your TV gig, we’ll let Adazio run the show, then come back.

If that failed: James Franklin. The choice couldn’t have been panned by the fans anymore than Muschamp was. And they’d get over it quick after they got to know him.

I've never mentioned this before on the board, but I have a good friend who worked in the football office for years under Spurrier. She was very close with him and the family and spent plenty of time with them outside the office over the years. I can't divulge what she told me about the whole foley fiasco because for years she would never say anything when questioned but about 3 years ago she opened up to me about it under the strict pretense that I never reveal a word of what she said.

So... I can't provide anything of substance, and for that reason feel free to disregard if you so desire, but what I can say is that the information she revealed about foley and his actions regarding Spurrier and the HC job were pretty shocking. There's a big part of behind the scenes foley that noone here knows about and that would shock even the most died in the wool foley bashers. Bottom line, foley was one supremely arrogant, narcissistic POS to the point of mortally damaging the football program just to spite SOS. To this day, my friend is so disgusted with foley, she won't even say his name.

I’m always impressed with the many folks here who have inside sources or sources close to the inside. It’s one of the reason I hang around here. There’s typically good info being shared. I’ve never claimed to have much in the way of inside sources myself other than some of the South Florida kids I know personally and even then my relationship with most of them is more distant. However....back in the day...on the old board....I got into some fairly serious arguments on how the whole Urban Meyer hire went down and what transpired concerning SOS’s interest in returning. I got information from a very credible source on this occasion. Although the board could not be convinced otherwise ....it is true that SOS would have been our coach again had certain folks not prevented it. It didn’t take much for Machen to pull the trigger. Now Urban obviously did a tremendous job for his 6 years (or most of them) but I would have preferred SOS for 12. SOS was a Gator and Urbs was a carpetbagger. Steve’s continuity would have kept the Gator brand alive. It is truly a shame.
