NCAA is full of clowns making clown decisions. The fact that UNC went unscathed is bad enough, but then there’s the agent/AAU situation recently in basketball that got swept under the rug (Miami and Auburn were two teams involved who have not been penalized at all). Top it off with obvious shenanigans at Bama, and you have a nice list of reasons the NCAA is full of crap.

There are no standards or criteria they use to hand down penalties, it’s all a crapshoot.

The NCAA needs Notre Dame from a financial standpoint than Notre Dame needs the NCAA. Same could be same for the SEC vs the NCAA as well.

I agree with every word. They can penalize for violating practice or recruiting rules. Or cheating on the field.

But academic or any non-athletic issues should be handled by the school, conference, or whatever governing body/agency.

Nike has committed $7.1B (yes, billion) on sponsorships in NCAA sports. That is clearly “sweep it under the rug” money. While these issues were adidas, the fact that it seems to have disappeared tells me there is a good chance that there’s other smoke. Hell, we basically pimped the jumpman logo. Imagine if a “booster” said “if you sign with us I’ll make sure you get an endless supply of the hottest shoes/apparel at any time”.

NCAA masquerades as a non-profit organization (much like the NFL), but if one of their money-making cash cows or 'Golden Boys' does something wrong they look the other way or give them a slap on the wrist.

I'd love to see the P5 schools break away from the NCAA.

I'm not sure how Title IX works, but if the other non-revenue sports stayed within the NCAA and the revenue sports broke away and had their own governing body I wonder if schools would be bound to the same Title IX rules (i.e. would schools have to keep the mandate of having equal scholarships for men and woman - when football, w/ 85 scholarships, kills the opportunity for most schools having multiple men's sports such as soccer, wrestling, lacrosse, etc, sports that most schools have for woman).

Not sure of the details in these academic fraud cases but I thought the Power 5 schools might leave the NCAA at one point but it would really change things sports wise if they did and probably kill off many non power 5 sports programs.

Title IX would still have to be enforced, I believe it is "enforced" by the DoE.

I agree. But if it's set up as two separate entities (where revenue sports count differently) they may be able to change the enforcement of it. For example, the football and basketball players are getting the "Cost of Attendance" stipends/money....and the woman aren't. How is that possible under Title IX? I'm sure someone more clever than me could come up w/ a system that would allow a split. I'd love to see UF add some men's sports. Go look at Ohio State (hell, most of the B10) and Stanford's athletic departments. They have at least 5 more men's sports than we have (and a few more woman's sports).

Ah someone who understands this. I knew from the start that the NCAA could not force UNC to rescind degrees or judge whether a class open to anyone at UNC was too easy.

As for the UNC issue, it come down to the kid helping with the cheating being part of the athletic department, ie a volunteer trainer, who could have been influenced by the athletic department to do this. UND likely judged that this kid was a jock sniffer who both help with the cheating and volunteered to be a trainer to be near jocks. UND likely found no evidence that the kid was pressured by any UND official to do this. They might have suspected that he would have done the same thing even if he was not a volunteer athletic trainer. The NCAA either suspected the UND athletic association just conveniently turned a blind eye to this or wants schools to be proactive with the other students they put around the athletes. Similarly I think the NCAA would come down hard on a volunteer tutor doing the same things.

That said, the NCAA has been getting into lots of things it does not belong in, like legal issues. If they keep it up, they may well see membership losses. I bet if they tried to stick their noses into Harvard's academics they would be told where to sit quickly. And I promise you losing schools like Harvard and MIT would do more damage to the NCAA than sports fans might imagine.

Am not and will not defend Penn State, but the NCAA also had there nose stuck in that situation where they had no authority or jurisdiction... That was a completely legal issue. No athletic competition or academics involved...

I wanted to bring this up too. They had no business getting involved in the Penn State issue. That was a criminal & civil matter....not an NCAA matter. Same goes for the current Michigan State issue; leave it to the criminal and civil courts.

Exactly. The NCAA was set up to have consistent rules for athletics. It was not set up to makes determine who is guilty of a tort or a crime.

When I saw the vid of Copelands mom get up and walk off the first thing I thought was there is a woman that just lost a ton of payoff money. NCAA is a joke from stem to stern, rotten to the core and everybody knows it.

Although I agree completely with the premise that ND is stating and I still have not reconciled how in the he!! UNC got off, let's not praise ND just yet.
The article references the fact that ND broke away and signed their own TV deal which is true but let's tell the rest of the story:
The SEC and the Big 12 first explored leaving the NCAA to sign their own TV football deal. ND swarmed in and put pressure on the two leagues to stay united with the rest of the NCAA teams and to not go rogue. Then six months later, ND went on their own and signed an exclusive deal with NBC. Real team players aren't they?

ND has been silent throughout all the dysfunctional, selective enforcement that has occurred during the last twenty years but now all of the sudden they are outraged. Because they truly believe that the NCAA has lost it? No, because it is impacting them.

Again, I am no fan of the NCAA, and would love nothing more than to see them diminished if not eliminated but I will not jump on the ND bandwagon of hypocrisy.

Then start a thread about ND being a bunch of hypocritical backstabbers...I will support you. There article on the NCAA is spot on and needed to be said.
