I was talking about Burney, Stewart and Gardner. If you don't think they have potential then you must not be paying attention.
This is a dline thread and it got hijacked. What a surprise.

Burney might get moved to LB and Stewart barely played last year. Who wasn't paying attention?

The 2008 defense made a slight improvement from 2007.

To be fair those teams were loaded with 4 and 5 stars on defense and no Butter and Sidehat specials. I think our defense will definitely take a step up this year regardless of the lack of star talent.

No comparison of defenses. Just emphasizing BMF’s point. That fantastic 2008 defense was total crap (and young) the year before. We have some freshmen who will hopefully take a significant step forward as sophomores.

They weren't really total crap, they were inconsistent and very, very talented freshmen.

Our defense last was neither. Except Gardner, and remember he was playing hurt early in the year.

If we are sending out Lenton and Taylor, I don't like our outlook.

Did the sarcasm fly right past me?
It was supposed to be a subtle dig at those claiming Mullen can't recruit.

However the sarcasm actually flew right past Itsgr8, because if his point is Mullen did fine in gathering equal talent, then the only explanation for his losing conference record finishing 5th in the west most of the time, and his all time 2-17 futility in ranked vs ranked games has to be he can't coach?

I feel better believing he couldn't recruit enough talent. At least that leaves us some hope.

yeah, but they are coming back this year....

Gardener was admittedly terrible, but I think much of that was lack of, or just poor, coaching. His fundamentals were nonexistent. That's correctable, and I do expect him to play better.

The other problem that I touched on in the final minutes of the Mich opener, is that guys like Stewart and Davis shouldn't have even been out there mid-1st quarter against the Wolverines. They were forced into action because they'd beaten out the 2nd and 3rd year guys that McElwain had signed, who (shockingly) didn't pan out.

I actually do think we'll be considerably better at Safety based on experience and coaches who have some idea of what they're doing. As Itraz pointed out, it's CB that we're in serious trouble if a starter goes down, also largely because of JM's failed recruiting. First team is solid. Behind that may as well be one of us. If teams need to throw on us late, our only saving grace may be the depth and rotation of the DL creating pressure.
