Carter's Corner: Gators Say Monday's Practice was Intense

Carter's Corner: Gators Say Monday's Practice was Intense - Florida Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Swept away by the disappointment that crashed over the Gators following Saturday's loss to Georgia, junior receiver Freddie Swain sat gloomily in a corner of the interview room at TIAA Bank Field.

Swain, whose 36-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter put Florida ahead 14-13, was convinced the Gators had the Bulldogs on the ropes. Instead, it was Georgia that walked off the field in the driver's seat for an SEC East title.

The Gators made too many costly mistakes at critical times, an issue that in Swain's view stretched back to practice leading up to the game.

"Practice was kind of lackadaisical,'' he said. "Just the effort wasn't there and it showed. The execution today was poor so we gotta be better next week."

Based on what players said following Monday night's practice, the Gators responded the right way.

Safety Jeawon Taylor sensed a team determined to not let the Georgia loss linger by having one of its most physical practices of the season.

"I just felt like that loss was a little bitter,'' Taylor said. "We had to get it out on the field. It was a lot more physical. Everybody was flying to the ball. Offensive getting their right blocks. It was very different."

After Saturday's loss, Gators head coach Dan Mullen said he thought the Gators "for the most part, had a good week of preparation."

Still, Mullen opened his press conference by saying how disappointed he was with the execution. The miscues included three turnovers that led to 10 Georgia points. The Bulldogs also converted four third downs into touchdowns.

"I thought they were ready to go play in the game, and you could see at times how ready they were," Mullen said. "We'll learn as a team how to play."

Veteran defensive tackle Khairi Clark is confident the Gators are going to avoid any late-season funk due to the loss. Clark echoed Taylor's sentiments about the energy at Monday night's practice being on a different level than normal.

"Oh, it was way different man, because we have a different mindset than last year,'' Clark said. "We think differently. It's mainly because of our new coaching staff got us, you know, looking at things at a different perspective, so we're very much more professional-wise."

The Gators play three of their final four regular-season games at home, starting Saturday against Missouri on UF Homecoming.

Monday's practice ended about seven hours after Mullen's regularly scheduled weekly press conference. When discussing the team's mindset, he considered two primary responses available.

"The bad one is you have the 'woe is me' attitude and the other one is kind of like, you know, annoyed that that happened and I can't wait to get out there to go fix it,'' he said. "I hope we're the second with this one. We certainly were with the first [loss] and I hope we are with the second."

Sounds as if they are off to a good start.

Why the hell aren’t the millionaire coaches setting the tone in practice? Like, am I going crazy? Why are the players dictating the pace and intensity? This was one of my biggest gripes out of the hundreds with Mac. There’s zero excuse to allow Georgia week practices to be lackadaisical.

The coaches do, and yet kids are gonna be kids. That's why you hear guys like Mullen harping on practicing perfect. It doesn't always happen.

They were getting out the frustration.
I hope w dont get in Mushchump landed and lose two players in practice per week, but we need the intensity.

Guys lets not forget.... it is week 9 of the first year. It is still the first year. Remember? Yeah, I forget sometimes too.
The offense wont even be fully installed til spring probably.

Every week and every rep there is probably still a lot going on. Plus there are moments when the light goes on during drills or in the weight room when kids say "Ohhh... thats what you meant. Now I get it."

Some days, you just dont have it at work, right?

And those are on days when you arent also dealing with a broken finger, a bruised ankle and knee, low back spasms, and forty different bruises and cuts, right?

They had a bye week man. I don’t see Alabama having any difficulty staying intense for ten straight years.

I think a hindsight after a loss is suspect. There's always retroactive regrets disconnected from reality ... that "If only" stuff. "If" is a delusional entangoment - bad dance. Got better things to do, like do better.
#1) improve QB-think.
#2) improve QB accuracy.
#3) improve ball security.
#4) improve all that other stuff while you're at it.

Don’t try to convince yourself that intensity at practice is the only reason we lost. Georgia is just better right now.

Really, Slevin? You're comparing us to Alabama in Mullen's first year? Wow!
To your earlier point, I don't think it's a matter of the coaches not enforcing a high energy practice regimen. But in order to have truly beneficial practices you need the players to strain. The coaches can't help the players do that. I tell the kids I coach all the time that they have to practice harder. I make them practice as hard as the rules allow, but you can always give more or try harder.
Mullen doesn't strike me as a coach that doesn't make his players practice hard. He's anti-Mac IMO.
But to be great you need more than just hard work. These kids have to learn how to strain to be great. These first year losses will go a long way in teaching these kids what it takes to be great. Most of these kids were recruited and played for a perpetual loser in Mac. It's why coaches generally don't win big in their first year on the job. They are usually inheriting losing programs and have to first show them how to win. And, ironically, you learn how to win by losing. Losers quit when they start losing(think Mac's Gators). Winners use the losses as motivation to never lose again(see '05 Gators).

edit: Saban was also 6-6 in his first year at Bama.

Fair point. I just don’t like hearing lackadaisical with 2 weeks of preparation for a game that basically decides the east title.

Mullen said that the effort in practice and the attention to detail was lacking leading into the UGA game.... That's on him. We probably still lose the game either way due to depth, and the kids fought all game long. It was the attention to detail that was a most glaring issue against UGA. Coaches getting that fixed.

Just because 1 player says it was lackadaisical doesn't mean it was lackadaisical. That could mean that Swain was lackadaisical and he is projecting.

I pity Mizzou. There is some anger that will be taken out on them.

Actually, I don't pity them. I'm looking forward to it.

I find it strange that you constantly attack Mullen but sucked on Mac and Muschamp’s balls for so long.

You’ve been an incredible Muschamp revisionist. Acting like he should’ve been fired after such and such. I could probably pull up 50 post from you where you said it wasn’t his fault and that it was injuries. And he needed another year. I’m talking about after losing a game to Georgia Southern where the other team didn’t even complete a pass.

Here we have a year where the team has performed tenfold of anything we expected. And lost to a team that has AT LEAST double the talent. With a QB who passed for about 100 yards because he sucks. And by the way – he has made this QB into one of the top performers in the SEC.
