Baldwin county, GA 750 am.
I set up my ground blind in 2017 in on the edge of a hardwood bottom with acorn trees and left it all year, so the deer are used to it now. I found scrapes, rubs, etc. around my stand Tuesday before the season opened. I did not deer hunt the first weekend, I was in SoDak busting roosters.
Daylight was slow to come due the remnants of a drizzling rainy night in GA (shout out to Tony Joe White), foggy, misty, etc., windy from the west, northwest. About 740 I sensed a presence over my left shoulder, I turned and saw something gray drop down into a swale, assumed it was a squirrel. A few seconds later, I see a deer crossing the stream bed going up the opposite hill. I think well that deer is moving on. A couple of minutes later I see the deer coming back down the hill quartering away from me, but going to the creek. So, I get my gun up, try to get him in the scope, too much brush, deer moving etc. Deer hits the bottom of the creek bed, turns and starts my direction, I realize it is a buck, but unsure of size. Deer is walking the creek bed, but I can only get intermittent views. So, I shoulder my rifle, and get ready for the shot if the deer passes in front of me. The Good Lord smiled on this Gator as the deer walked up the creek bank directly in front of my blind, slightly quartering to its left and stops and stands there like a statue. I put the green dot in my scope just in front of the deer's shoulder blade and dropped the hammer. The deer disappears, no flopping, kicking, no noise whatsoever.
I exit the blind, walk over to the creek and my buck is laying there after sliding back down the hill a few feet. I say to myself HOLY SHYT! Only the second deer I have taken that got bigger when I walked up to him, most suffer at least a bit of ground shrink, not this bad boy.
Apparently he was checking his scrapes after the rain, before hitting his bed for the day. His neck was swollen, but he was not giving off a strong odor, so the rut is close, but not quite kicked off. I did have some Tink's 69 out, not far from where he stopped.
Firearm: CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62 x 39 mm.
Optic: Trijicon 3x9x40 with a green dot in the crosshairs.
Ammo: Hornady Steel Case 123 grain SST
Distance: 20 steps or 18 yards or so.
Weight of deer 170 - 175 pounds
