Why does Mac deserve a 3rd year if he goes 7-4?

He's beaten no one of note in year 2. The offense is a dumpster fire. We all can see this team isn't improving. Recruiting is awful, apathy is spreading. In fact IMO keeping Mac will just make it worse. So pumpers-realists why does Mac deserve a 3rd if he gets blown out by FSU-LSU? Any smart team, business, etc would see that allowing the same problems to occur over and over again. and not immediately fixing them not only causes you to lose money, but makes the hole to dig out of that much deeper.

If an HC (Mac) deserves to be hired, he deserves 3 years... but did he ever deserve to be hired ?

If he goes 7-4... yes. He deserves one more year to see if he can get an offense going. I think it is fair to give him 3 years. I also think he will get them regardless.

This is stupid. At least let him get his guy at QB in the game before firing him.

Every QB on the roster was brought here by him.

Grier is gone. Treon wasn't his fault. He recruited 2 guys that show promise but they are true freshmen. AA and LDR aren't solutions and never were. They were hail mary attempts for this season that haven't panned out which is no surprise. Transfer QBs usually aren't that good. He deserves next season. Fire him after 2 years and no worthwhile coach would touch this program.

I look at the overall state of the program more than W & L. Undefeated seasons are rare so we know losses will happen. But how the team plays and how the coaches prepare the players for each game are far more important to me. Moreover, does the team show improvement throughout the season? Sadly, this Gator team under Coach Mac has shown little or no improvement and with the recruiting capabilities of this staff in serious question, I see little or no hope. Yeah I know 3 years would be fair and I would go for that if the team showed even a glimmer of improvement, but it has not. The performance vs. Arkansas was retrograde, an embarrassment, especially for a key game this late in the season. Given the overall state of the program, I say, FIRE HIM.

Who has shown promise and when?

16-6...one game better than Chump and the strength of schedule is at an all-time weak point. I saw enough last year as the genius looked stupid. I am starting to think the players are not buying into Mac's BS either. Say he loses out...I would think that he lost the team at that point as well. Take the $7 million out of Foley's retirement. Dark days again.

He'll get a third year no matter what happens. It's more about optics and money than sense. He's not going to turn this thing around any time in the near (1 year) or distant future. Anyone who understands college football can look at this team and see that the complete collapse last year and the impending collapse this year are not anomalies. Our losses have come, and will continue to come, against decent to good football teams. The games we won came against mediocre to bad football teams. After over a year and a half we are still a bad football team with little sign of progression or improvement. Does Mac deserve another year to coach what will continue to be a bad football team? Not if we are serious about getting back to the ranks of the elite.

His "guy" is playing QB. If you bother to recall, the insider's scoop last year was that Del Rio would have been the QB over Grier and Harris.
What if "his" QB, the next one, sucks too?
Franks is a guy with all the stars, but, especially since Tebow left, has that made any difference. I didn't watch Franks in high school, but I did see him in the All-Star game and in the Spring game. He looked horrible.
Trask is a project, unless you think Nussmeier is a genius that saw something no one else did.
The next wunderkind, Jake Allen, supposedly, looks like crap on the high school field.
A transfer? I wonder if McElwain can attract someone other than a Purdue reject or a guy who looks like he'd b a bench warmer at most schools.
McElwain isn't going anywhere, but I think it's inevitable he'll be fired. The only question is when.

Normally, I would be on the give it time bandwagon, but I've jumped off because of the recruiting. I don't see how we expect to "improve" if the rated talent of our team is not improving. We're just going to get more of the same with the same hollow promises and hopefulness. Again, the reasoning is the current staff is not "coaching up" which we would see in successive improvement or at least aggressive attitudes. If we do not see measurable improvement in recruiting for our needs, I think its obvious keeping Mac around just insures our agony. The contract is the contract, but I'm feeling pretty bummed not seeing some of the nations kids on radar landing in Gainesville.

I'm all for firing him at any time, because I don't see any improvement and recruiting is poor overall...especially at positions of need. That said, it may be wise to wait until you feel like you know exactly who you want to replace him. We can't afford another roll of the dice.

I am not sure we are serious about getting back there. Not really sure we're not either, tho. Kinda like a plane in a holding pattern,..eventually that things gonna run out of gas. Do something. Go somewhere.

Teams typically take on the personality of their coach --especially the great teams. This is what scares me with Mac, and it has been demonstrated by the play on the field. Mac will most likely get next year; however, he will have to make some staff changes or we will have a new coach for 2018. Does he deserve that? I think so, but the SC game will show us a lot. I know we have injuries, but we really need to see some fight and competitive spirit --that's on the coaches and whatever leadership we can muster. Unfortunately, we haven't seen that from the offense. That has to change.

he wouldn't, but because of the long contract he signed, he'll get it anyway.

100% agree...... It's not about deserving anything.....

I agree with you 100% and this is how I watch games. I also am not a scoreboard/stats watcher, but totally a process person. If the process is good the results will take care of themselves. I have shared these exact same sentiments on here since last year and am usually met with hatred for having an objective opinion. I hope you do not also suffer the same vitriol, but your post was spot on in my opinion. Better to rip the bandage off quickly, than to peel it slowly. The quicker you reach the bottom, the quicker you can begin to build. Butters does not possess the innate things that show me he will be a good HC. Those things can't be taught or learned.

shouldn't the title of this thread be "If Mac goes 6-6 does he deserve a 3rd year"?

cuz that's what's about to happen folks.....

we're gonna get blasted for the next three games, play in some toilet of a bowl, and get blasted there too.
