Arizona State didn't have a problem finding a veteran OL coach:

Arizona State: Josh Henson’s title at Arizona State is offensive line / assistant head coach / run game coordinator. Henson spent one year as an Oklahoma State analyst and was Missouri’s offensive line coach from 2009-15.

This place is an offensive coaching factory!

Eastern Washington losing coaches to FBS is becoming a common occurrence.

Following Troy Taylor’s recent move to Utah as offensive coordinator and Beau Baldwin’s move to Cal as offensive coordinator on Monday, EWU running backs coach Kiel McDonald has also joined Utah as running backs coach.

EWU went 12-2 this past season, and they finished third in FCS in scoring at 42.4 points per game. They’ve finished in the top 10 in FCS scoring in three of the last four years. EWU quarterback Gage Gubrud led FCS with 5,160 passing yards this year.

Boise State co-offensive coordinator Zak Hill coached QB’s at EWU from 2009-15, and new Western Kentucky offensive coordinator Junior Adams also moved from EWU to Boise before going to WKU. If you need an offensive coach, it's a popular place to look right now.

Would have been nice for Mac to hire Baldwin as OC. But, nope!

Interesting stuff here. Beau was the leading candidate to take over as Nevada's HC but turned it down to stay at EWU. Apparently holding out for a Power 5 gig, even as a Coordinator, instead of a HC at a lower FBS.

Addition of 10th full-time assistant coach is one step closer to happening

FBS football is one step closer to adding a 10th full-time assistant coach, and it appears likely to happen.

On Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Council supported the proposal to add a 10th assistant. It will be voted on by the Council in mid-April with a simple majority needed, and the Board of Directors meets to formalize proposals two weeks after that.

USA Today reports the Board of Directors is expected to adopt the proposals.

Last week, the AFCA expressed unanimous support for the 10th assistant coach. FCS already has a 10th assistant.

While this proposal might create some problems off of its implementation, the coaches want to move forward with this proposal very quickly,” AFCA executive director Todd Berry said in a release. “What makes this legislation important is that football has the lowest coach to student ratio of any NCAA sport, so this would be very beneficial to the football student-athlete.”

Most coaches I spoke with at the AFCA Convention believe the new spot would first be filled by a current staffer or coaches currently out of work, rather than widespread poaching by big schools. That means more full-time opportunities for graduate assistants or quality control coaches.

Down the road, it would help the schools with more money to spend, but it could also help the lower schools that don’t have the money to load up on a support staff or recruiting staff — which are not allowed to work with players on the playing field. But in a time where more people are calling for athletes to get a bigger piece of the revenue pie, this will be another point.

Nick Saban has long been in favor of a 10th assistant and said he would use it as a standalone special teams coordinator.

“No doubt. I’d love it,” Saban said in 2015. “I think it’d be great. I think that having a 10th coach so you could have nine assistants and special teams coach would be a real asset to the players and the staff. Hopefully some day, we’ll be able to do that.”

It could also allow schools to send an assistant on the road recruiting during game weeks when the rest of the staff is preparing for a game. They could treat fall recruiting like spring recruiting.

That will be especially important with the expected passing of a December signing period. Senior year evaluations will need to be made quicker, and the process is going to be sped up. To have an assistant on the road during the season leading up to early signing will be especially valuable.

It’s possible the proposal could pass the Council and later get pulled back by the Board of Directors, as happened with satellite camps last year. But all signs right now point to a 10th assistant, and head coaches will be looking at their options.

---

Along with 10th assistant and recruiting changes, other issues addressed by the Board of Directors on Wednesday, per USA Today, included:

- It adopted a recommendation to allow rising seniors to take official visits from April 1 to the Saturday before the last Wednesday in June.

- The proposal regarding Individual Associated With a Prospect moves forward. Under the proposal, IAWP cannot be hired in a non-coaching position two years before or after a recruit’s anticipated enrollment. This would be similar to the basketball rule.

- No adjustments to the summer camp proposal, which would limit camps to 10 individual days in the first 3 weeks of June and last week of July and kept on NCAA program facilities.

- The council discussed the idea of taking a team away from campus for spring break, but forwarded it to the Student Athlete Advisory Council.

- The council discussed a mandated 14-week playing season beginning in 2020, which would give every team two bye weeks during a season and move up the start of the season into August.

Clemson just lost a DC:

Jacksonville Jaguars: Clemson co-defensive coordinator / defensive ends coach Marion Hobby has been named defensive line coach for the Jaguars. Hobby has been at Clemson since 2011. He and Doug Marrone worked together on the New Orleans Saints staff from 2006-07.

Cal: Eastern Washington wide receivers coach Nicholas Edwards will join the Cal staff in the same role, according to multiple reports. Edwards spent two years at EWU and becomes the fourth EWU coach to move to the Pac-12 this offseason. He will join former EWU head coach and new Cal OC Beau Baldwin.

No, they didn't lose their DC. :headslap:

You can bet that Brent Venables is firmly and fully in charge of all aspects of that defense.

I'm sorry...."co-DC".

- Dabo Swinney lost two assistants in the past five years at Clemson. Now he’s lost two in a week.

Defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks retired and defensive ends coach Marion Hobby accepted the defensive line job with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Swinney said ahead of the title game that he prefers to have two defensive line coaches, because of the importance of the position. But analyst Mickey Conn has reportedly been promoted to co-defensive backs coach, so it appears Swinney needs to find one defensive line coach moving forward — although the potential passing of a 10th full-time assistant could mean two DL coaches again.

Tennessee: Utah State running backs / associate head coach Mike Canales will “imminently” become Tennessee quarterbacks coach, according to 247Sports, which adds that offensive line coach Don Mahoney and defensive line coach Steve Stripling have contracts that expire at the end of February. Tight ends coach Larry Scott is still expected to be promoted to offensive coordinator.

LSU: Offensive coordinator Matt Canada will earn $1.5 million annually on a 3-year deal, according to The Advocate. That makes Canada the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the country.

Taggert just put together an impressive staff at Oregon:

Willie Taggart has completed his full-time coaching staff at Oregon.

With the addition of Raymond Woodie as special teams coordinator, Taggart has his nine full-time assistants and head strength coach.

The potential addition of a 10th assistant coach in a few months could change things, but for now, here is the 2017 Oregon staff:

2017%20Oregon%20staff.png

Despite moving across the country, Taggart is keeping a number of those ties to Florida.

He brought co-offensive coordinator / tight ends coach David Reaves, running backs coach Donte Pimpleton and special teams coordinator Raymond Woodie from USF. All three have deep ties in the state. Woodie is a former conference recruiter of the year. Taggart also brought several staffers with him from USF.

Then there’s the addition of co-offensive coordinator / offensive line coach Mario Cristobal from Alabama. Cristobal is one of the top recruiters in the country in Florida and is a former FIU head coach.

It’s expected that Taggart will continue to call offensive plays, as he did a year ago. Based on the setup, it’s possible Taggart could coach quarterbacks, or Reaves could, which he did at USF. It could also be a spot for the potential 10th assistant.

The last offensive spot, wide receivers coach Jimmie Dougherty, has a history with Jim Harbaugh, as Taggart does. Dougherty was a Michigan offensive analyst in 2016 and worked under Harbaugh at San Diego from 2004-06. Dougherty brings West Coast ties, also working at Washington and San Jose State.

To run the defense, Taggart hired Jim Leavitt, who turned around the Colorado defense in two years. It’s a partnership between two former USF head coaches. He brings a little Pac-12 experience and previously worked under Harbaugh with the 49ers.

Leavitt also brought Charles Clark with him from Colorado to coach cornerbacks. Clark spent four years coaching defensive backs at Colorado and previously worked at SJSU. Safeties coach Keith Heyward comes from Louisville, but has deep West Coast ties through work at USC, Washington, Oregon State and Cal Poly.

Defensive line coach Joe Salave’a spent five years at Washington State, improving WSU’s pass rush and run defense. He and previously worked at Arizona and San Jose State and received a new contract at Washington State last year.

Taggart brought head strength coach Irele Oderinde with him from USF, but Oderinde has been suspended for a month after three players were hospitalized during winter workouts. Previous head strength coach Jim Radcliffe was retained by Taggart in a lesser role and now takes over again on an interim basis.

Taggart’s first three games as Oregon head coach will be against Southern Utah, Nebraska and at Wyoming.

Not a great hire at all...

More on this:

Tennessee: Tight ends coach / special teams coordinator Larry Scott has been promoted to offensive coordinator, and Utah State running backs / associate head coach Mike Canales has joined Tennessee as quarterbacks coach. New defensive backs coach Charlton Warren will have special teams coordinator duties. Scott has spent one year at UT. Canales has 23 years of offensive coordinator experience, including stops at North Texas, USF, Arizona and more.

Alabama: Mike Locksley’s promotion to a full-time assistant will include a co-offensive coordinator role, according to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman.
