I just got home from the game and all I can say is that it was another masterful performance by Mike White. Just brilliant. Offense as usual was stagnant as a post with 3-4 guys standing around waving their hands and not moving for most of the game. But why beat a dead horse? And early on, White had to see that he could not play Egbunu or Hayes in this game unless they were going to dominate on offense, which they were not. Vandy was able to isolate Egbunu against one of their three best ball handlers or shooter every time down the floor and Vandy either drove to the basket (which is not their strength, but they did a nice job today of it), or got enough space for a 3 point shot which is their strength. I would have rotated a combo of Stone, Robinson, Barry and Leon to guard Kornet, and force him to beat you with his back to the basket and making 2's instead of shooting 3's.

Lastly, I sure hope Mike was able to sell his last timeout to someone after the game or hope he has fun taking his last timeout home with him in his pocket. Down 2, 7 seconds left, balll out of bounds under your own basket right in front of you and you don;t use your last TO to try and set something up. And you got that look. That tells me that you have no ability to get the players to understand the situation. Mike kept 3 non scorers on the floor on that play (Hill, Cheese, and Eggy) so all Vandy had to do was guard Allen and Barry and make sure they did not get a good look at a 3 and you saw what we got. Laughable. All we needed was a 2 to tie, so drive to the goal b/c Vandy was not going to foul in that situation. Enjoy that TO you took home Mike. You were brilliant today!!!!!

And to make matters worse, they trotted Butters out at halftime to talk to the crowd. Mike and Butters in the same building at the same time. The Head Coaches of the 2 most under coached teams in D-1. I thought I was going to vomit when Butters was talking!!!!!!!!!!

Devin Robinson is in some kinda funk right now. Don't know if he's mentally checked out or what but he needs to pull it together. Nice to see Allen bounce back after a few off games. Eggy and Hayes are completely lost right now, too. Hill did a great job today until the last couple minutes when he started pressing and trying to do too much. First truly "bad" loss of the season.

Not to keep piling on...but....Robinson said after the game that we were not used to switching 1-5 and they ended up with communication problems that gave up some open layups and 3pters....that was probably the worst overall aspect of the game. We changed our D and it made us worse....

Edit: Oklahoma is also tied with Iowa St at home with 4 min left....

Now Oklahoma will be a bad loss even on the road if we don't get our act together.

You could never have convinced me that we could waste a 29 point outburst by K.Allen.??
It's games like these (SoCar & Vandy) where our guys actually look like they're a thrown-together group
watching the opposing team to pick up clues on how to play basketball. Are they getting winning instruction
from the coaching staff? Do the "things" they're made to do in practices cause them to leave the session feeling
upbeat, dynamic and chomping at the bit to lay it on the next opponent? Somehow I doubt that.

This season's stream of flow shows no "team" gelling into a formatted attack. ?? I see random individuals
who seem to be auditioning for playing time - sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing, but all the time
unaware of how to go about together at breaking down the opponent.?? What gives career coaches??

There are times this team runs an offense and moves and they are much better when they do that. They were doing it earlier in the season, but seem to have gone back to 1 on 1 basketball. I am not sure why. I hope it is a funk and White gets it fixed.

Street ball. It's been my biggest complaint about White. He doesn't draw up plays and just allows the guys to play street ball. Nothing new.

After the game he said that he probably should have called a timeout after the pass inbounds because Allen was stuck in the corner

Hindsight is 20/20 Lee, as you well know. That is why Mike is an awful game coach. He can't see what is going on during the game, thus makes zero adjustments. I see all this stuff and it seems so easy to me. Maybe b/c when I watch games I watch them from a completely different angle and more from my old coaching side. I think a lot of these things I see are so obvious and wonder why guys making a zillion dollars to do a good job can't see this at all. Mike's comments are typical reactionary just like society. Too few proactive people and only reactive when they see the obvious. Keep it up Mike.

Here is a write up about by the game with a bunch of comments from White and a few players. Some of the worse things we can hear now. Players finger pointing in game, White blaming the defense (was going to keep playing that D no matter what vs them), and basically telling the team and fans...we are at a crossroads. We either get better or go down in a flaming ball of crap lol

Thanx for posting this Lee and after reading I just shake my head. Everything I mentioned, White also mentioned, but if you want to narrow it down to its core, this game cam down to this! Can Vandy run enough motion on offense to get the Florida Big Man isolated on a shooting/driving guard vs. Will the Florida Big Man be dominant on the offensive end against a Vandy defense who does not have a single player that weighs more than 170lbs soaking wet so that it outweighs the Big Man's defensive liability? Yes everyone knew UF was switching ALL screens. Okay, well if you are going to do that and keep a Center in the game, you then have to have a plan to funnel that offensive player to a specific area so that he does not abuse the mismatch. Well that never happened once, b/c it never crossed White's mind to devise a defense that would funnel the Vandy offensive player out of his comfort zone. Dick Bennett (Tony at UVA's father) was a master at funneling players who had advantages on offense out of that mismatch very well and Tony is good at it now. As someone mentioned early, Mike just let's these guys play a sort of organized street ball. Mike has a very limited knowledge of anything sophisticated in the X's and O's department.

Dick Bennett was a genious. I went to college at UWSP where he first coached. His brother Jack coached a a long time there and won a few D3 championships after I graduated. My oldest brother went to UWGB when Tony was there playing for His dad. The Bennetts teach great D, fundamentals, and discipline. As you can tell we are Bennett fans.

So White is saying we have to wait to get all his guys. Next few years may be rough.

I'm obviously not on the "Fire White" train, however I will say that the coach I'd want most to replace him is Mike Brey. That dudes teams are always super competitive (although limited in talent) and he is a great teacher of the game. I actually enjoy watching ND play, they are so fundamentally sound.

Yes Dick Bennett was a coaching genius. I was living in Chicago in the late 80's and the 90's when they still had a lot of those 4 team Xmas tourney's. Well DePaul hosted one and they played UWGB coached by Dick Bennett and led by a very small white guard named Tony Bennett. the other 4 UWGB starters did not exceed 6'4" in height. And DePaul had one of those athletic, long teams under the direction of the horrendous Head Coach Joey Meyer. Well I sat in the arena and watched UWGB carve up DePaul with backdoor cut after backdoor cut for layup after layup (they had no one who could jump high enough to dunk). They were always at the perfect 45 degree angle to either pass into the post or to hit hit a cutter thru the lane for a layup. It was a clinic. It was my first live experience with the Bennett's and have been a fan ever since. Dick went to UW and resurrected that trainwreck who turned it over to his disciple in Bo Ryan who continued the success. Dick then went to Wash. St. and resurrected that disaster, left it to Tony who turned it into the UVA job. again I agree totally, that Dick Bennett is one of the greatest college basketball coaches that the average person knows nothing about. However those in the game will tell you that he was truly a genius.
