Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas. Food eating champ.........She also gets an honorable mention in the "Wind Breaking" category.

She looks kind of like Sally Field on PCP.

A couple of GOATS I'd add (hope they haven't been mentioned and I missed them):

Soccer - Pele (never cared much for soccer growing up, but the guy was simply phenomenal)

images

Olympic Weight Lifting - Vasili Alexeyev (it was him and everybody else when I was a boy)

Speed Skater - Eric Heiden

images

Pro Football Coach - Vince Lombardi (personal favorite, so I had to list him, but he was the man in his day)

*edit* Almost left this guy out...

One hit wonders

Eric Gagne- Went from average, to one of the best relief seasons in MLB history and then fell of the face of the earth.

Brady Anderson- Slap hitter belts 40 homers one year.

Can't believe I left off Rivera from earlier:doh:. He definitely has the edge over Smoltzie.

Didn't Anderson hit 50 one year?

Williams was the best example of power and average the game ever saw.
I've read that Williams once stated that he could see the seams on a baseball pitched to him as it approached the plate while he was at bat.

And don't forget Ted Williams missed about 5 prime playing years to serve his country in the military during time of war.

And not doing PR stuff; playing softball, selling war bonds, and signing autographs. He really served.

He became a marine aviator during WWII, so good he became an instructor. Then he was called back up during the Korean War and flew over 30 combat missions.

People smarter than me extrapolated his career stats if he had played those years and it's eye-popping.

If we're judging all-around talent, the best I ever saw on a baseball diamond were:

1) Mays
2) Clemente
3) Mantle

Yeah, Ruth was a successful pitcher, blah-blah-blah. He was also a fat chub who probably wouldn't do jack shyt around today's game. One guy who always gets under appreciated here is Mantle. Early in his career, he was probably the best all-around player in the game. Knee issues and alcoholism robbed him of what could have been an even better career than he had.

Another guy who probably deserves mention for all-around prowess is Jeter. How many guys did what he did year in and year out over that long a period? He was the definition of money. As time goes by, his name will probably start popping up in the discussion of best ever.

Clemente was hands down the best defensive outfielder to play the game.

Helluva a bat too. But Clemente throwing out runners at home from right field was a thing of beauty. 12 Gold Gloves, .317 lifetime avg, 3000 hits before his tragic death AND an all-around great human being.

Thats actually pretty much a requirement of being a big leaguer. No other way to tell a slider from a fast ball bc the major leaguers usually dont alter their motions.

I usually hate when ancient threads are resurrected, but re-reading this one has been fun.

Brady has solidified GOAT QB.

LeBron has put hoops GOAT in dispute.

Saban college football coaching GOAT.

LeBron hasn't done shcit since this thread was created. I actually edited my post that had him as the GOAT. I'm pretty embarrassed with that one
