Kentucky: Per the Louisville Courier-Journal, offensive coordinator Eddie Gran has a new 3-year deal that pays him $825,000 in 2017, with $25,000 raises the next two years. He would owe UK $150,000 if he leaves for another job. In addition, recently-promoted defensive coordinator Matt House will earn $650,000 annually on a 3-year deal, new outside linebackers coach / special teams coordinator Dean Hood will earn $350,000 on a 2-year deal, and new defensive line coach Derrick LeBlanc will earn $300,000 on a 2-year deal.

UTSA: Former Alabama defensive line coach Bo Davis has joined the UTSA staff as defensive line coach. Davis worked at Alabama from 2014-15, but resigned a year ago after an NCAA violation. He spent last summer interning with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

There were 21 FBS head coaching changes this offseason. Of the 19 publicly-available salaries, only nine schools will pay their new coach more than the previous coach. Last year, 10 of 22 new public coaches made more than the previous coach.

2017%20coach%20salaries%201.png

2017%20coach%20salaries%202.png

Of the 19 public salaries, 14 schools dismissed their head coach. Of those 14, eight will pay the new coach more. Of the five that lost their coach to another job, only Temple will pay the new coach more, though WMU and Western Kentucky are about even.

* Matt Rhule’s listed salary at Temple for 2016 was $1 million, but reports indicated it may have actually been more than $1.5 million.

** Charlie Strong’s USF salary is low because of how much he’s owed in buyout from Texas. His USf salary is $1 million for the first two years, before jumping to $2.5 million.

***Art Briles made more than $5 million in 2014 in the most-recent available numbers. Baylor is a private school, so Rhule’s contract details don’t have to be released, but it’s hard to imagine Baylor is paying him anything close to that.

Tom Allen’s salary at Indiana hasn’t been released yet, but it’s unlikely to be more than Kevin Wilson was paid. The same goes for Justin Wilcox at Cal, but reports indicate it’s expected between $1-2 million, which is less than Sonny Dykes.

Some of these salaries aren’t surprising. Tom Herman was the highest-paid Group of 5 coach at Houston. Major Applewhite will earn half as much, and also has an incredibly school-friendly contract, which includes buyout terms like Applewhite paying buyout for assistants who aren’t retained at UH if Applewhite takes another job. After losing Art Briles, Kevin Sumlin and Herman to Power 5 schools, Houston wanted a coach who will stay around (as long as he wins).

LSU’s decision to promote Ed Orgeron to the full-time head coaching job saved money on him, and led to more money for assistants. Dave Aranda will make $1.8 million next season, the highest-paid assistant in college football history, and Matt Canada will make $1.5 million.

Purdue made a huge investment with Jeff Brohm. Not only will he make much more than Darrell Hazell did, but the assistant salary pool also increased by $1 million, to $3.5 million. At Cincinnati, Luke Fickell's 2017 salary will be less than Tommy Tuberville, but annual raises will push it higher later in the deal. At UConn, Randy Edsall will make less than he did at UConn in 2010, and incentives only increase it by another $100,000. He also has $300,000 retention bonus on Dec. 1, 2019, and another $200,000 two years later.

The two Conference USA schools in Florida made huge investments. Both Lane Kiffin and Butch Davis will make much more than their predecessors.

Of the 21 changes, 16 have 5-year contracts. Mike Sanford at Western Kentucky only has a 4-year deal, while Matt Rhule got a 7-year deal, as the school needed to show commitment to a coach, coming out of the sexual assault scandal.

Georgia: Per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, running backs coach Del McGee has received a $75,000 raise to $350,000 annually, and head strength coach Scott Sinclair has received an $80,000 raise to $300,000.

Marshall: Carol City High School (FL) head coach Aubrey Hill will join Marshall as wide receivers coach, according to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman and CanesInSight’s Peter Ariz. Hill was Florida’s wide receivers coach from 2011-12 and Miami’s wide receivers coach from 2008-10.

Marshall: With the addition of Aubrey Hill as wide receivers coach, previous wide receivers coach Todd Goebbel will move to quarterbacks. It currently gives Marshall 10 assistants, though one will likely serve as quality control until the NCAA's 10th assistant proposal is voted upon in April.

Vanderbilt: Former Wake Forest director of high school relations Warren Belin has rejoined the Vandy staff as outside linebackers coach, according to The Tennessean. Belin was a Vanderbilt assistant from 2002-09. He spent the last four years at Wake Forest, including the first three as linebackers coach.

Florida International: Former Ole Miss quarterback Drew Davis has joined FIU as a graduate assistant. Davis is the son of FIU head coach Butch Davis. The younger Davis played at Ole Miss from 2014-16.

Wisconsin: Head coach Paul Chryst has received a $500,000 raise to $3.2 million annually, and that will increase $100,000 each year through 2021, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. In addition, offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph has received an $80,000 increase to $650,000 annually.

11 numbers to know about the FCS head coaching carousel

The head coaching carousel is about wrapped up, and there were 16 changes in the FCS ranks.

Some coaches left for FBS, some moved around within FCS (including the same conference), and some got hired from out of work. The path to a head coaching job is never the same. Here’s a by-the-numbers look at some of the trends from this FCS cycle:

Four head coaches left to become FBS assistants. Charleston Southern’s Jamey Chadwell became Coastal Carolina offensive coordinator as they elevate to FBS, Elon’s Rich Skrosky became FIU offensive coordinator, Eastern Washington’s Beau Baldwin became Cal offensive coordinator, and Indiana State’s Mike Sanford became Western Kentucky running backs coach / special teams coordinator, working for his son. Last year, four FCS coaches left for FBS, but two as head coaches.

Two schools hired sitting FCS head coaches. Delaware hired Richmond head coach Danny Rocco — a move within the same conference. Richmond responded by hiring Chattanooga head coach Russ Heusman. Last year saw the same number of FCS head coaches move to another FCS head coaching job.

Three schools hired FBS assistants. Furman hired Air Force’s Clay Hendrix, Howard hired Maryland’s Mike London, and Indiana State hired Wyoming’s Curt Mallory. There were four such hires last year.

Four schools promoted from within to replace a coach. Charleston Southern promoted QB coach Mark Tucker, Eastern Washington promoted OL coach Aaron Best, Presbyterian promoted defensive coordinator Tommy Spangler, and Morgan State promoted interim head coach Fred Farrier to the full-time job. By comparion, last year 8 of the 19 changes led to internal promotions

Two schools hired coaches who were out of coaching work. UC Davis hired Dan Hawkins, who most recently was in media, and Lamar hired Mike Shultz, the former Texas State offensive coordinator.

Three schools hired sitting head coaches from Division II or Division III. That included Abilene Christian (NW Missouri State’s Adam Dorrel), Chattanooga (John Carroll’s Tom Arth), Elon (IUP’s Curt Cignetti). Last year, there was only one such hire.

Two schools hired sitting FCS assistants. Bryant hired Princeton offensive coordinator James Perry, and Lafayette hired Richmond offensive coordinator John Garrett.

76-8: New Abilene Christian head coach Adam Dorrell’s record at Northwest Missouri State, including three 15-0 seasons and DII national titles in the last four years.

9: Beau Baldwin spent nine years as Eastern Washington head coach, before leaving for Cal. Baldwin posted an 85-32 record, including a 13-2 national championship season in 2010.

24-5: New Howard head coach Mike London went 24-5 as Richmond head coach from 2008-09, before going 27-46 in six years at Virginia. He won the 2008 FCS national title with the Spiders.

112: Mount Union had won 112 straight regular season games before Tom Arth’s John Carroll team beat them in November. Arth went 40-8 in four years and is now the Chattanooga head coach.

Tennessee ads 5 new assistants:

Butch Jones has completed an overhaul of the Tennessee staff.

With the reported addition of Kevin Beard, Jones has four new coaches on staff and promoted two more. The changes come after a 9-4 season in which Tennessee was the favorite to win the SEC East and didn’t. Jones is 30-21 in four years, but 14-18 in the SEC.

Jones’ staff only had three changes in the first four years, with one of those going to the NFL (Mike Bajakian) and the other becoming head coach (Mark Elder). Now there are major changes for 2017. Some assistants were let go, some left, and some moved into a different role.

2017%20Tennessee%20staff.png

Previous offensive coordinator Mike DeBord took the same job at Indiana, and Jones promoted Larry Scott to OC after a lengthy search. It’s Scott’s first college coordinator job, though he did serve as Miami (FL) interim head coach in 2015.

To fill DeBord’s quarterbacks job, Jones hired Mike Canales from Utah State. Canales has coached QB’s at several spots. He was North Texas’ offensive coordinator from 2010-15 and previously South Florida’s OC, where he worked with Larry Scott.

Offensive line coach Don Mahoney wasn’t brought back, and Jones promoted quality control assistant Walt Wells to the job. Wells spent one year as a quality control assistant after working at Eastern Kentucky, New Mexico State, USF and Western Kentucky.

Defensive line coach Steve Stripling moved to director of football program development, and Jones hired Brady Hoke to coach the line. Hoke spent one year as Oregon defensive coordinator and was previously Michigan’s head coach, but he has a defensive line background. He coached the group at U-M as head coach and has shown an ability to identify and develop talent there. He and Jones are good friends, and Hoke was around UT practice in 2015 after he was let go from Michigan.

Defensive backs coach Willie Martinez went to Cincinnati, and Jones hired Charlton Warren from North Carolina to fill the role. Warren spent two years at UNC and one at Nebraska, but worked at Air Force from 2005-13. He’s also a former Air Force player and active service member. That military background drew the interest of head coaches.

The last addition was wide receivers coach Kevin Beard, who spent last year as a Georgia quality control assistant and joined FIU as wide receivers coach earlier this offseason. He previously coached receivers at Miami, where he worked with Larry Scott.

Jones also hired a new head strength coach in Rock Gullickson, who is the program’s third head strength coach in three years. Gullickson comes to UT after seven years with the Rams.

The Vols open an important 2017 season against Georgia Tech in the new Falcons stadium, followed by a home game against Indiana State and a trip to Florida.

.

This hire has far reaching implications. Weinke still has connections at IMG. Hold on boys. Saban still two steps ahead of everyone else.

Rex, that's the same thought I had. There's someone (a player) at IMG that Saban wants badly.

It's absolutely amazing we haven't signed a single player from that school - when they're pumping out 5+ high level D1 players per cycle.
