There have been many famous cover songs that people didn't know were actually cover songs. Take for example Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor. This was actually a Prince song. One I recently discovered, I had no idea, is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper. This was originally by Robert Hazard.

Also, Midnight train to Georgia is a take on Midnight Plain to Houston.

Also, Whiskey in Jar is an Irish folk song. I like Thin Lizzy's version.

So, what are your favorite cover songs that few realize are covers?

"Shambala" by BW Stevenson and Three Dog Night (Stevenson's version was supposed to have been released a day before Three Dog Night's - who covered who?).

Very cool Cover. I like the Stevenson version better

Thanks Chomp. Shambala was a favorite in my early high school days. I'm like you in that I preferred BW Stevenson's version. He just had an earthy richness to his voice. My Maria was another favorite. Too bad that so many only know it as far back as Brookes and Dunn. Funny that we're talking about covers...seems I remember that Three Dog Night's best were usually somebody else's songs, but they usually did them really well. And BTW, Corey Wells' get up in that video looked like what Coach and I were wearing to the dances along about that time!

Took my daughters to a Carrie Underwood concert a few months ago and they loved her version of I Will Always Love You, which of course they have never heard of. They were shocked it was a cover of Whitney... which of course is a cover of Dolly.

I've always liked Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. That was a cover of Leonard Cohen.

Manfred Mann made it famous, but it's a Springsteen original (Greetings album).

The original was recorded in 1952.

Elvis lit it up on "white" radio in 1956 with this "cover" and it's never been the same since.

Composer Pete Ham doing the original version...Nilsson later had a massive hit with it in '72

For some reason when I was at UF, I really got into David Allan Coe.
Here's the original of one of DAC's biggest hits by THE BEST ... Steve Goodman:

Gonna get cheesy here...
I always thought Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods originally did this song.
But I saw a version by Paper Lace (The Night Chicago Died band) and it turns out they had a hit with it in the UK ('74) before the Heywoods version.

Half of Led Zeppelin's discography are cover songs no one knew were actually cover songs. :lol2:

I just happened to read that "Take me to the River" by the Talking Heads was a cover of Al Green's original. Never knew that.

Talking Heads – 1978

Al Green – 1974

Metallica gained their notoriety by covering obscure British heavy metal songs early in their career and conveniently left out the part that they were recording covers.
