I've always wondered if that decision was made when that Freshman died in Summer camp that year. Like something changed.

I doubt it but you never know. Spurrier just seemed like he was finally ready to try it at the next level to me like many of those big college coaches. He was probably burnt out on college some at that point.

I wonder what this board would of been like when Urban lost to Bama in 2005 31-3

Well:

1. Do think as you say that McElwain would like to win just few enough games as he can and keep his job?

2. Do you think it is negative as your tone seems to convey that McElwain trying to win games is a bad thing?

3. Would you really fire a coach who won the SEC but did not have a top 5 class?

4. Whose ratings would you give veto to on retaining your coach?

I agree that there were reasons to be skeptical when McElwain was hired. I agree that McElwain's two SEC East titles does not cement him in the job. However, McElwain is UF's coach and I think your conclusions should be more in line with what we would expect of any UF coach.
Imo your goal every season should be to play for a national championship and that's for any team in the county. Last year when LDR went down with an injury that was already out of reach. Why not play one of your fr that should be your starter next year to gain experience so their not under pressure to perform against Michigan in their 1st game. Instead he went the safe route and put in someone who has experience to give himself the best chance to win. And yes you should always play to win but sometimes you have to play for the future which is what UGA did with Eason and now he has the playing time and will be a much better Qb for gaining that experience.

At the start of each game, from game 1, I sit on the edge of my seat hoping we outplay the other team and win that game = win every game after game. After every loss a down-turned weekend ensues. When we win, everything is endowed with an elevated feel.

Our situation is kind of like listening to a financial advisor. He keeps telling you that you're in the game for the long haul and you need to ride out the short term ups and downs. The thing is you keep waiting, pay exorbitant fees, and never get rich.

For Chimp: I was hanging in with a tiny bit of hope until he lost to Vandy at home.
For Mac: When he said he would help with the buyout of his contract at CSU. Red flags went up all over the place.

That is certainly a good answer to my first question. I can understand fans wanting a coach to look more long term than a coach loyal to his current team might be.

Of course, my belief is that your premise is wrong. UF was unbeaten when LDR went down. I could see arguing that UF had no chance at the national championship once McElwain started LDR or I could see saying that if he went with a true frosh to start the season, but if you believe UF had a chance with LDR, then you pretty much must believe UF had a chance with Appleby. Heck I thought that injury might be a blessing if Appleby with better teammate could be better with the obviously deficient LDR. Appleby certainly has better tools than LDR.

That said, my other 3 questions are pending.

The moment a Coach opens his mouth and doesn't state he's here to install his previously winning system and looks forward to kicking everybody's ass in the league... we have a problem. The mojo and the world beater attitude starts from the top.

We passed on Joe Milton to go after Justin Fields but end up with Chase Wolf and end up starting Transfer Treon 2.0.
