7. Declining the motion penalty and clock management was bad. The first half offense was conservative but they did control time of possession with long drives. Second half they took some shots that didn't pan out but that's the way it goes sometimes. Time of possession in the second half is on turnovers and the defense. Turnovers came on first down, first down, and second down. We lost 102 yards of rushing on the 2 fumbles. Defense ended a long Tennessee drive with a pick 6 and then is right back on the field. Then they couldn't tackle and get Tennessee off the field.

Wow, Let's see if I can clean this up:

1. UF's pick 16 was returned all of 16 yards. It was on the third play of a "drive" that netted UTn -1 yards. So yes UF's defense was right back on the field, but not after a long drive by UTn.

2. UF certainly did not lose 102 yards due to fumble. Neither fumble was returned at all. Of course a fumble through the endzone is a touchback so UF lost 19 yards due to that. So UF gained 83 yards on those fumble plays. Without those yards, UF well might have lost that game.

3 I have no problem declining the penalty. I just did not work out, but there is no guarantee you stop them for two plays after a short penalty.

4. The clock management in the last minute was an issue to me.

Here is a link to the play by play:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/playbyplay?gameId=400933856

if you would like to check out the details of the UTn drive prior to the pick six.

We lost 102 yards of rushing on the 2 fumbles.

I don't think this is correct. Didn't Davis get credit for that long run (stat wise)? Isn't that yardage then also included in our rushing total? How could it not be if the yardage shows up in Davis' stats?

You're correct. Davis is credited with 4 carries for 94 yards, so the fumbles didn't negate the rushing yards.

Hell, they didn't even call the last play right.

Actually, yes they did. Franks was supposed to throw to the sideline route but his protection broke down and he had to scramble. By that time he saw Cleveland waving his hand, so he motioned to the other WR (I can't remember who it was right now) towards the sideline and the safety bit for about .5 secs and that bought Cleveland a bit more separation and the rest is history. Franks made a heads-up play under duress and turned a 10-15 yard out-route to set Eddie up for the game winning FG into a TD bomb and ended it even better than the coaches could have imagined.

It was the wrong play call because they wanted Franks to throw a 15-20 yard sideline route. So it's not the play itself that shows bad coaching but the reasoning behind the play.

Sorry, I can't agree with that. When you have Eddie Pineiro as your FG kicker, you feel pretty good he can get the win for you if you can just get him within his range. They weren't playing for OT with that play call. They were playing for the win. Just not the way it went down.

That type of yardage gets us in field goal range with a kicker who can hit anything from the plus side of the field. It was the same play we torched them on two years ago. It was the right call.

9 seconds is a pretty tight window to complete at least a 20 yard pass to get into field goal range for a 60 yard field goal. It's possible but that would've been cutting it very close. Honestly, I think our chances of running out of time were greater than being able to get the timeout or out of bounds in time. Of course the inexcusable clock management just before that put our guys in an even tougher situation.

I agree it was a tight window, but I'm happy as hell the coaches gave Franks a chance. It paid off.

Franks went off the playbook and went downfield for the td. The play was designed for 15-20 yds. Franks made the play not the staff.

Holy hell.

Just the way it happens frequently in every game ever played. A coach makes the call. A QB makes an adjustment based on the what he sees on the field. This played out perfectly. Great adjustment by TC and great read by FF. Multiple posters have pointed out how many times he locked on to a single receiver. This will loosen him up dramatically knowing he can make reads and identify the right pass. I see more growth coming for a talented young QB.

Nice win!

Like several others in the gameday thread, I questioned JM's declining the motion penalty. Obviously anything can look like the right move if it works. In this case it didn't, and I'm not sure there's a valid argument for the move. Just dumb.

Where I'm very much in the minority is with regards to the clock management at the end. No question it signaled that we were content going into OT, which I didn't want to see either. But at that point, you have a 3rd down and 1 with a young QB trying to rush things. If we'd had a bigger play on 1st, or secured moving the chains on 2nd, I think we have to go hurry up. But the vols still had a timeout, and if we're stuffed on 3rd down, and something happens on the punt, that could be them throwing up a deep pass as time expired. Now JM's explanation, as Sas pointed out, makes no sense because of the 25/35 yard line, and that shouldn't slip by a well paid HC. I would like to have seen a little more hustle between plays, but I was actually ok waiting until we got a 1st down to call the timeout. The OT wasn't going to be caused by failures on one final series. It would've been a result of many failures over the course of 60 minutes.

I also think a huge positive of this game, which hasn't been discussed very much, was the amount of fans that turned out and stayed through a pretty frustrating game. Would've been all too easy to leave early and get back to the post-Irma cleanup, or not show at all. But most didn't. And those 10 yards on back to back false starts on their last possession took them from the 12 to the 22, and had a huge impact on their play selection. That's homefield advantage at its finest. A watered down Swamp, for sure. But still was the Swamp on some of those plays. McElwain is sitting on a gold mine of a situation, if he would only find a way to cash in.

Also, Cleveland has become my new favorite current Gator. The emotion he showed at the end was awesome. Really glad for him.

That route is part of the progression. He followed the progression and made the play. It wasn't a scramble drill where Cleveland just broke free. The play was designed that way. Not sure where the confusion is.

I'm not confused. The kid made a great throw and Cleveland made a great catch. If you are trying to sell anyone that the play went exactly how the staff designed it or intended it to go...I'll laugh at you. Mac admitted as much right after in his on the field interview. Feel free to watch it.

If a route is part of the progression, then it has gone as it was intended to work. That's how route trees work. They may not have expected Cleveland to break free for a touchdown the way he did, but it's not like it was a broken play.

I get what you're saying. You need to find the post game interview. It's pretty pathetic. Not sure if it was the booing or Franks going off script and throwing deep. He flat out said that the the intent was to get into FG range and try to kick it. And he says it like someone just died.

EDIT: Not sure if you are wanting me to give Mac or Nuss some kind of credit...it ain't happenin'.

The coaching still sucks. Bottom line
Everyone thought we'd have an emotional letdown after UT two years ago, and with this same coaching staff, we boat raced Ole Miss the very next week. Kentucky doesn't worry me at all. They've beaten three terrible teams and looked incredibly mediocre doing it. Until they manage to win a game against us in my conscious lifetime, I won't be worried about them.
