Why do you all keep watching this garbage?

I literally just got done watching the game replay on YouTube. My wife asked me why do I subject myself to this over and over again?

I'll answer your thread with the same response I gave to her... There's 52 weeks in a year and the Gators only play in 13 of those weeks. I'll spend the majority of my year doing anything else, but for these 13 weeks I'm watching the Gators.

Win or Lose!

This is the only team, across any sport, that I'm a FAN of.
Fan is short for fanatic.
A fanatic is one who is fanatical.
To be fanatical means to be filled with excessive and single minded zeal.
That definition encapsulates my affinity.

If you aren't watching it's because you're just a casual fan. Nothing's wrong with that. You're just looking to be entertained. Others have a vested, rooting interest.

I understand a lot of the reasons on his throne. But I don’t understand the “through all kinds of weather”. What does that mean?

Does that only apply to watching games? Because that’s kind of the vibe that I’m getting on this thread.

A lot of you were like an abuse victim. Continue to endure the pain in hopes that there will be a change.

I show support in many other ways. I just elect to not watch the game. At least until there is a competent staff.

I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I’m a little bit older. And I’m married. And I have two boys. And I coach both of their basketball teams. Plus they’re both in scouts. And I run as an assistant scoutmaster.

Maybe it’s because of all of that – that I find it very, very, very, difficult to invest my time and energy into watching something that I love fall apart and decay. It brings me no joy.
And somehow you find the time to be a mod on an internet forum.

I guess your real question is what separates fair weather fans from all kinds of weather fans.

I’m not a casual fan by any stretch of the imagination. I just don’t believe in abusing myself. I’m not into self immolation.

Since you’re taking a personal swipe at me – how does that make me a fair weather fan?

I got my blue car with the Gator tag keyed. We were beating them then of course.

I just got a metallic blue F-150 that matches my plates beautifully! First time I've had a vehicle that wasn't white/black/silver. Luckily for me, all of the fan bases for teams around here are happy because their teams have been whipping our tails.

We are in a way abuse victims. I'm 3rd generation if you count my Grandmother's masters degree (all male back then, got the degree later). There's a lot of abuse and "wait til next year" in that history.

GatorJ, let me just answer your question this way: If you only watch when we are good, then what you are is a bandwagon fan.

If your child was playing football, would you only watch the game if he was a starting QB on a winning team? Or would you still watch even if he's second string on a winless team?

True fans are invested in the team. Like Ox said above, when the championships roll around, they are a hell of a lot more special to the guys who are there through thick and thin than they are to the guys who spend their Saturdays fishing during the tough times.

It's the exact definition of a fair weather fan. You watch when we're winning and you don't when we're losing.

I don't really see how you could take that as a personal swipe.

I understand where you're coming from. And my referring to you as a casual fan wasn't meant as a slight to your fandom. I was just pointing out that a fanatic is excessive and obsessive by definition. Therefore, someone not wanting to watch may not be fanatical.

I’ve had to work the last 2 Saturdays during game time. I recorded both games. I deleted both without watching them. But I hang in there otherwise because they are my team. I’ve loved the Gators as long as I’ve been interested in sports. I’m an alum (‘83) and had season tickets for 24 (1990-2013) years until work intervened. I didn’t give up in 1979 and I won’t now. But there’s no point watching when they aren’t invested in a game. I get that it’s hard for young men to prepare well and play hard when there’s so much going on. Many of you hate Mac, but most of them chose to play at UF at least in part because of him.

I’d like to see them rally but after yesterday it will be a surprise if it happens. Still, I’m behind them just as I would be if I were their coach or teacher or whatever. They are young men learning hard lessons.

And I’ll enjoy the climb when it happens. My grandfather (UF ‘31) waited 60+ years for his first legit SEC title. I’ve seen quite a lot more success.

So I have to destroy my Saturdays and be pissed off all weekend from watching a poor product on the field in order to qualify to watch the good product when it comes back out?

I guess my response to this would be that I consider myself a fanatic, I'm an alum (including my brother, sister, wife, and father-in-law), and i get pissed when they lose like this. And yet (yes I just did use that) I finish watching the game, realize a new staff is coming soon, and move on with the weekend.

Good job as a moderator GatorJ. You got us fired up and got the message board going when it could be sagging after a deflating loss.

For sure my fanaticism has been extinguished a bit.

Interesting. My dedication and interest with my children and their sports programs is not the same as me watching the UF gator football team. I continue to watch the other sports. And I continue to donate to my university. Although I did just recently donate this year because I held out until they fired Mac.

You can bet your ass that I’ll be watching every basketball game, attending some, and cheering my ass off.

I watch, immediately get sick to my stomach and walk away. Then I watch some more, get sick to my stomach, and walk away. Rinse repeat. It used to be a ritual that my son and I watched the games together, or were in the swamp; yelling screaming, bitching, or cheering. Now we don't even get together for the games. We just call each other and bitch...did you see that?...can you believe what just happened?...what the hell were they thinking?. That only works if one of us hadn't walked away during the "play" (I use the term play losely) in question.

Gator for 60 of my 70 years. Son, Gator since he was born. Both of us alums.

The basketball team is a top ten program and the other sports win championships. Those are worthy of your attention, but not Gator football since its garbage.

I was Gator born and Gator bred, and when I die I'll be Gator dead.

I HAVE to watch, it's in my DNA.
