Question about Kelly

So not a done deal yet but certainly looks like it could happen. It would appear based on the post that at least on this board, we would be elated or at least much happier with Kelly than we were with Champ and Mac's hiring when it was first announced.

How much time do we give a coach to get this team turned around since he seems to be one of the top 2-3 that we would want to begin with? I say 3 years as long as we see progression, particularly with recruiting, Offense and ST. What say you?

The honeymoon's over at the conclusion of the introductory press conference. Then the death threats can commence.

He will need a minimum of 3 years, this roster isn't going to beat any decent team with Jesus coaching them. He will need a couple of recruiting cycles to fill the roster with SEC caliber players and have depth. Plus implement his system,

Give the reins to Corral on day one, nobody else on the roster has it, we can have some packages for Toney. Bottom line, need a real offensive line, need SEC DT's and LB's or we will look like a Big 12 team needing 50+ to win.

Year 1 instant excitement positive impact, more wins
Year 2 Great recruiting, huge improvement
Year 3 National power (hopefully no NCAA snooping around)

Define turned around?
Our competition sucks. We easily could have been 9-2, 10-1 this season if we had any competency on the coaching staff and a few less injuries just because that's how bad everyone else is. Once again we will only have two challenging games next year, UGA and FSU.
So the question is when can we compete with those two. The Fisher magic may have worn off at halF aSs U. And UGA is wait and see. We beat UGA we get back to Atlanta. Can we compete? Defense is gonna be a struggle.

It’s not a question of turning it around, it’s a question of improvement. If you think numbers are bad now, wait until the post spring exodus.

I think we struggle in year 1. Offense improves and shows signs of life. Defense struggles to find identity, but improves over this year. Injuries and lack of depth could play a role. Probably something like 8-4 give or take. I think the product improvement will be noticeable but there will be some struggles.

Year 2 will be a lot of young guys playing, and we could have a similar record as year 1, but there will be dynamic young players gaining experience and flying around. Could be a magical season or just another step in building something.

Year 3 will be the 3rd year for Corral and company and the second year for the ‘19 class. Expectations are high and we will be expecting to compete for an SEC title.

This could be accelerated or decelerated by the number of transfers, recruiting and key injuries.

I think we saw immediate progress with Urbs teams, although he had some good recruiting left by the Zooker. But I kinda now it when I see it and the first indicator that things are looking up is if we can get the recruiting going and win the state IMO. Second is blowing out teams we should blow out and being competitive even when we are clearly outgunned with better talent (early, that should change after few years).

He certainly has to have UF competitive in ALL games by the second year. He team has to be competent in all phases of the game.

2005 was a struggle and Urban has to adapt mid season. 2006 was an absolute stud defense with a phenom frosh on offense. Offense was a struggle until the championship game. 2007 the offense clicked but the defense was young, talented but young. 2008 was the peak of anything Urban will ever build.

So he struggled, but lots of progress and some luck.

I think the OP was asking about 2018 and the new coach, Chip Kelly....not 2015 and McElwain. You can't recycle the same excuses already!

Even taking the competency of the coaching staff (or lack thereof) into account, if we had a few less injuries (or maybe no injuries, well, let's say no significant injuries) I bet we beat LSU, A&M, Mizzou, and SC. That's 7-2 (loss to UGA). Maybe even loss to one of those, and we're 6-3.

For anyone who has read what I wrote (or can remember what I've wrote), you'll know that I've never been one to "want" to lose just to fire the coach. However, if we are 7-2 right now, Mac is still here, and probably even if we are 6-3. So there's a reason for everything (a season for . . . ). We've had to endure a miserable season to get us a coach who will hopefully lead us back to Spurrier-Meyer success. Let's just hope that he is the right coach for Florida.

Probably three years as long as we show improvement from year to year. The good news for him is that we are mind bogglingly bad right now. We have lower end top 25 talent, but should probably be ranked somewhere around 80th in the nation based on how good we are. I would think that if we had a staff that could even coach a little, we'd improve next year.

The other issue is that Kelly'd brand of football is fun to watch. I've always been a believer that a win is a win, but Muschamp and Mac really made me rethink that philosophy. For the last five years, even when we won, it didn't feel like it.

Like Rex said, progress. We should see progress as a whole and win some games we probably shouldnt just from coaching and scheming. Need to see many less penalties and some overall discipline and be able to tell that we have actually practiced. Recruiting needs to be consistent. Hopefully the players will be having fun.
