I think everyone is reaching when they try to explain the delay in the announcement with "vetting Kelly, vetting assistants, vetting his dog" and now "Shannon's feelings may get hurt".

The simplest explanation is usually the most correct. The "deal", if there was one beyond discussions, is not done. And yes, UCLA could change things.

Nothing to worry about because UCLA has already contacted Butch Jones. The word is Butch Jones wants to bring his assistants, and UCLA is vetting them

UCLA fired coach Jim Mora earlier in the day on Sunday after the Bruins started 5-6 this season. It’s widely believed that UCLA’s first choice will be former Oregon coach Chip Kelly, but McElwain could be the Bruins’ next call.

McElwain has roots out west. He was very successful at Colorado State before coming to Gainesville and as spent time at Eastern Washington (his alma mater), Montana State and Fresno State in his coaching career.

With multiple SEC and Pac 12 openings already out there, this coaching carousel could get very interesting.
