what if...and I stress "if" Phil Knight supports CK going to UCLA so that CK can flip them from UA to NIKE? CK going to Florida does nothing for NIKE as UF is already a NIKE school. BUT....if CK goes to UCLA and flips them to NIKE, that would be additional advertising and revenue for NIKE and I would be willing to bet it makes it's way to CK in some form or fashion.
There is all kinds of precedence for this in the corporate world where an executive is hired by a company and then uses his leverage to change vendors, partnerships, and distributors to those that he had a close relationship with in his previous company. The vendors then provide "kick backs" to the executive to compensate for salary discrepancies in his contract.
Disclaimer: This is considered unethical and in most cases illegal BUT every time you finance a car....the reason you get a better price from the dealership if you finance with them is because they make it up on the kickback from the finance company they choose to do the loan. It would not surprise me at all if CK goes to UCLA and within 2-3 years flips to NIKE and CK gets an contract extension within 6 months of the flip. The business world is dirty and CK to UCLA expands the NIKE universe if CK can negotiate the ability to make that decision or be part of it.
Just a thought....
The possibility of flipping UCLA to a Nike school is a good point. And in sports branding today, this isn't something considered dirty at all. The brands are dominating these days. Shoe deals are what completely drives the NBA free agent market. Seriously, look at how Durant's move to Golden State was driven by Nike's desire to crush Curry's UA deal. In many ways, the top stars no longer play for teams, but for shoe companies. Franchise contracts are only part of the deal now.
But, you make a good point overall. However, I think the main advantage for us in your scenario is that UF is first and foremost a FOOTBALL school, and we have a national TV audience dying to watch us compete. And we are one of the true giants of college football's most important conference (we were, at least... and we can be again). UCLA is not the TV ratings draw that we are. They aren't even the top draw in their own town. If UCLA and USC are playing at the same time, it's no contest. Or if UCLA is playing, and the Dodgers or Lakers are on TV, no one will be watching. Hell, the same could be said with the Clippers or Kings, too.
Anything is possible, but I think Kelly will be a Gator.
