Why shouldn't wide receivers block?

Just saw our own Trey Burton throw a beautiful block to pave the way for a touchdown followed by Julio Jones throw a nice block on a 20 yard play. Why do some of you get so upset with the expectation that WRs block? It must certainly help their NFL stock.

no one said they shouldn't block, just that they shouldn't only block

I think donkey is the one who objects to WRs blocking...
He can give his perspective, but I always took his comments that the WR would primarily be blockers in Mullen’s system. I agree with that. I’d rather the primary function of a WR be catching the ball. But you’ll always want them blocking downfield on running plays. Hard to pop big runs without that

Because its it ties up more DBs for them to run a route. And if the safety doesnt honor the route you kill them on play action.

But thats not the way you play 1950s triple option at Notre Dame.

Chip Kelly was very proud of how well his WR's block. Pretty sure it was his goal for them to be the best in the country at it. It was a pretty big deal to Urban Meyer too. Unless your entire offense relies on fooling a safety and throwing behind the CB then your WRs better damn sure be able to block.

Nobody that has any football knowledge at all thinks WRs blocking is a problem. The issue some of us have joked or mentioned is that WRs roles in Mullen's offense will be almost solely as blockers. That could be an issue in the future trying to recruit highly touted WRs because usually those guys wanna catch the ball...not block. Trey Burton is a good football player. He's more of an H-back than a WR. Not surprised he's out there playing smart football.

The donkey be right. Case closed.
Let's don't close the case until you and Bruce actually see Mullen's offense and whether they actually catch the ball as well as block. Indeed, in a surfeit of open minded behavior we might even see how he recruits WRs.
And I am not buying the "we only want them to catch as well as block" garbage. Some of you perpetually complain about any expectation of blocking. The irony is that your pass catching only receivers can't even catch.

No one is upset by receivers who can block. People are tired of blocking receivers who cant catch.

Im actually quite hopefully that SOS can alter some of Mullinz NDism. He was really never exposed to anything else. I think there is some evidence that he wants to open it up at least when its obvious he has the talent to do so. We will see.

AR, you really need to argue w me, dont you? Im here for ya, buddy.

Why change now? I would say that we don't now have blocking receivers that can't catch, we have catching receivers that can neither catch nor block.

Exactly, everyone likes WRs who can block once a runner gets into the open field. What people wonder about is making the FIRST assignment on a play to block and reveal it is not a passing play.

Throwing a block is a fine ability to have. Making catches down field is even better. We haven't seen much of either in recent years - as I recall.
