Wasn't thrilled with Mullen or Grantham. Hope it works out for the best. Stepping stones to get to where we want to be, I suspect.

Well, the analysis of Shannon, while true, fails to mention the underlying factor in nothing really working on defense, piss poor defensive recruiting by Butterteeth. At some point, you just have to pick your poison when you have DEs that can't set the edge, LBs that can't cover or run stop, and safeties that are shaky at everything.

and there were rumors that he left Louisville not because of performance, but an inability to get along with head coach Bobby Petrino.
Yeah, I have a real close friend inside at Loovulle and they sure as hell didn't like him a bit. Of course, that's par for the course for the good coaches but my friend wouldn't work for him again, even to come to Florida-- his dream school (he never got to play for us but did play IA)-- he said.

That being said, I really like his style of defense. I'd rather see us blitzing, attacking, even if it means the occasionally getting burnt. Screw those bend and break defenses. Even when they work they leave us with a long field with weak offense that has virtually no chance of travelling the length of the field.

I'm having a hard time supporting him simply because of his bush-league choke gesture to Chas Henry before he booted that game winning field goal. **** the Dwags so by extension **** him too. For the good of the program I hope he's successful but I'll wish nothing else good for him.

Well when you get to this statement in that link:

...by relying on a cover-2 scheme early in the year that isolated his linebackers on running backs in space.

you should know that you are reading something by someone who does not understand the difference between a zone like cover2 and man defense. And then you should follow my lead and STOP READING.

:rolleyes4:

Thats exactly what we do, with people who post about UAL and UTN.

This is reason to like Grantham. His defenses are aggressive, blitz a lot, causes turnovers. Our previous defense caused nearly zero fumbles AND got burnt plenty.

Why doesn't he factor in experience? And he was talking about replacing polite with Clayton just because of star rating?

I'm just happy about some change... the players should be around some organized adults with an agenda to accomplish a mission. Now whether we get to said mission accomplished, time will tell... but come on, we literally had a sideline zombie and dolt in the booth just stumbling and bumbling through the week. It showed in player 'want to' and preparedness. I hope we hired a few more men, teacher of boys types.
Go Gators.

Well I think you make my case for me here.

The main point though is, if you have two deep safeties, then your LB is only being asked to cover RB in short space. There is no defense where you can't get an RB or worse a WR on an LB. What cover 2 and even man under does is give the LB caught on a really good RB help behind them. Playing such a defense with a robber does the same thing but tries to fool a QB with a defender who can free lance. It is when you go press man that your LB must truly cover an RB in space.

You sound like my son. He knows none of the general terms, just blue 35 or red 13 saber or whatever.

“But anybody expecting to see a top-10 defense is going to be disappointed. Grantham’s never had one, and some of those defenses have had significantly more talent.“

Bull. He’s had several top 10 defenses at UGA and Louisville. MSU was 13th in total defense last year.
