Mehhhh.... was looking at their class and saw nothing interesting.

He might steal a defensive recruiter to from Alabama because of his pre-existing relationships with them.
Well they went from laughing stock to competing for recruits. Walker cancelled his UF visit after his UT visit. Not saying they’ll snag a lot of guys, but the perception has improved since the hiring process began.

This is about as bad for college football as the 'players should be paid' mantra. This will open up Pandora's box. Literally, after a "player's coach" is fired you could see 30+ transfers. It would be the death penalty. Texas A&M players could run to Arizona to play for Sumlin. FSU players could bail out and go to Texas A&M. Or if a position coach leaves, we could see Martez Ivey transfer to Missouri to play for Davis. Or a star player from a smaller program (like UCF) transfer to Nebraska w/ a guarantee to start. It's nothing but trouble and it could get ugly. The first time a school (other than Alabama where it's normal) loses more than 5 or so players the NCAA will go "oh sh*t!, this was a bad idea!" It could kill a program. Also, if they allow unlimited transfers (from a school, not by a player) they'll need to re-address the 25 player limit per recruiting class. If you lose 10 transfers you have to fill the roster somehow!

Your same reaction to Kirby getting the UGA job.....ho-hum, "we own UGA!!! We're FLORIDA, dammit!!"
Get back with me in two years about Mushchump part 2 at Ugly.

Mushchump had a two loss season also.

Yeah, there are concerns. Not sure how bad the transfers would be due to scholarship limits, etc. So, the 30 players leaving may not be very feasible, but it doesn’t have to be 30. It could be 5 top flight guys that take off and kill a program for a bit.

I’ve never been a fan of the transfer rules but never really thought about it too much because I never thought it would be addressed. You bring up a lot of legit issues and I’m not sure how you regulate it. Maybe loosen the hardship qualifiers and see what happens.

This was posted by a UGA guy on the SEC board, shows how incompetent Butters was...

Which programs are stepping up and which are slipping (in recruiting)?

Here are how various programs ranked in terms of the Total number of 4* and 5* recruits signed during the 5 years from 2009-2013:

1. Alabama- 89
2. Texas- 81
3. Florida- 76
3. Ohio St.- 76
5. LSU- 74
6. USC- 70
7. Florida St.- 62
8. Georgia- 61
9. Michigan- 60
10. Oklahoma- 58
11. Auburn- 57
11. Notre Dame- 57
13. UCLA- 49
14. Tennessee- 44
15. Oregon- 43
16. Clemson- 42
17. Texas A&M- 41
18. Miami- 39
19. California- 36
20. S. Carolina- 35

Now here are the number of 4* and 5* kids signed by school during the 5 years from 2014-2018 (includes commitments in the current 2018 class not yet signed):

1. Alabama- 96
2. Ohio St.- 87
3. Georgia- 79
4. LSU- 75
5. Auburn- 74
6. USC- 69
6. Florida St.- 69
8. Texas- 62
9. Notre Dame- 61
10. Oklahoma- 59
11. Michigan- 58
12. Tennessee- 54
12. Clemson- 54
14. Penn St.- 50
15. Texas A&M- 49
16. UCLA- 46
16. Miami- 46
18. Florida- 41
19. Stanford- 36
20. Oregon- 35

If you compare the most recent 5-year period (2014-2018) to the previous 5-year period (2009-2013), these are the programs that have stepped up their game the most in terms of recruiting:

1. Georgia +18
1. Penn St.- +18
3. Auburn- +17
4. Clemson- +12
5. Ohio St.- +11
6. Tennessee- +10
7. Washington- +9
7. Kentucky- +9
9. Texas A&M- +8
9. TCU- +8

And here are the programs that have seen the greatest drop-off in incoming talent (Note: its not a good thing to be at the top):

1. Florida: -35
2. California: -27
3. Texas: -19
4. Nebraska: -13
5. Oregon: -8
6. Missouri: -7
7. Oklahoma St.: -6
7. Virginia Tech: -6
9. UCLA: -3

**Note: Alabama led the way with the most 4* and 5* recruits during both time periods. They actually signed 7 more during the most recent 5-year period compared to the previous 5-year period.

If you want to know why Florida is struggling these days, its because they don't have the talent. They're averaging 7 fewer 4* and 5* kids signing PER YEAR. Multiply that over 4 or 5 years and you have a team totally depleted of talent compared to how it used to be.

Was McElwain truly a bad coach or did he just fail to bring in enough talent to be nationally relevant? If Dan Mullen wants to succeed at Florida he's going to have to start signing Top 5 or Top 10 classes annually. Here are where the last several Florida signing classes ranked:

2018: #17 (current ranking)
2017: #11
2016: #12
2015: #21
2014: #9
2013: #3
2012: #3
2011: #11
2010: #1
2009: #7

This is about to be the 4th consecutive Florida signing class outside the Top 10. If you are in the SEC, you can't be competitive without at least Top 10 talent. Mullen was not particularly known for his recruiting abilities in Starkville. However he now has a better program to recruit from. Will be interesting to see if he turns it around.

When the Class of 2020 is all signed, if Mullen hasn't signed a Top 8 class, go ahead and write him off. Florida has got to sign Top 5 talent if it want to compete for SEC/National Titles.

On the other hand, all 5 schools who have stepped up their game the most in recruiting the last 5 years played in NY6 Bowls: Georgia- CFP/NCG... Penn St- Fiesta... Auburn- Peach... Clemson- CFP.... Ohio St.- Cotton

*And here are the # of 4* and 5* kids signed by SEC programs the last 5 years (includes current commitments in 2018 class):

1. Alabama- 96
2. Georgia- 79
3. LSU- 75
4. Auburn- 74
5. Tennessee- 54
6. Texas A&M- 49
7. Florida- 41
8. Ole Miss- 33
8. S. Carolina- 33
10. Arkansas- 23
11. Miss. St.- 21
12. Kentucky- 19
13. Missouri- 9

I didn't count up Vandy's but its probably right around where Mizzou sits.

That gap between #4 and #5 is MASSIVE.

Florida invades Peach State

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-peach-state-prospects

Several recruits in the state of Georgia received visits Tuesday from the Florida coaching staff.

Gators defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and defensive line coach Sal Sunseri went to see Caleb Johnson, a 3-star defensive end from Northside High School in Columbus, Ga. The Gators are in need of defensive linemen and Johnson is one of their top remaining targets for the Class of 2018.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound pass rusher has been communicating with the new coaches and will officially visit Florida this weekend. Johnson took a trip to Georgia last weekend and will check out Auburn on Jan. 26. He also officially visited Tennessee on Sept. 30.

Grantham also made his way to Cordele, Ga., to meet with Alabama commit Quay Walker. The 4-star linebacker from Crisp County High School told SEC Country on Sunday that he was no longer planning to officially visit Florida, but Grantham is still trying to get him on campus.

Walker has already rearranged his visit schedule a couple times, so it’s possible for him to change his mind again. The top-100 overall recruit has called UF his dream school and likes Grantham’s 3-4 defense. Nonetheless, the Gators have ground to make up on Alabama and others.

Florida extended a scholarship offer to Taiyon Palmer, a 4-star cornerback from Archer High School in Lawrenceville, Ga. The former Duke commit re-opened his recruitment in late November and has since received offers from Arkansas, Clemson, Louisville, Nebraska, Notre Dame and others.

Palmer officially visits N.C. State this weekend and has already taken trips to Nebraska and Vanderbilt. Florida will try to get him on campus on Jan. 26 or Feb. 2. The 6-foot, 178-pound prospect is the nation’s No. 28 cornerback, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

The Gators also offered Palmer’s teammate, Andrew Booth. The top-100 overall recruit is the No. 5-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2019 and holds offers from Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and other Power 5 programs.

Trente Jones, a 2019 lineman from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., was re-offered by the new Florida staff on Tuesday and picked up an offer from Michigan as well. He is ranked the nation’s No. 23 offensive tackle in the 247Sports Composite.

UF also stopped by Marietta High School, which is home to some elite 2020 recruits in quarterback Harrison Bailey, athlete Arik Gilbert and defensive end B.J. Ojulari.

  • The Gators were also in California on Tuesday, offering 2019 quarterback Jayden Daniels (Cajon High School), 2019 tight end Jude Wolfe (St. John Bosco High School) and five underclassmen from Mater Dei High School.

BMF, I agree re needing to be a top 5 program in recruiting, bit I guess Im just being extreme in allowing him more than a couple of weeks to do it.

Im weird like that.

Hell some might even say I dead horse a few times re Butters horrendous recruiting and scoffed at the few tards claiming Ole Butters had "rebuilt the team".

Look I promise to byytch loud and often once Mullinz does something I dont like. Trust me. Im a man of my word.

Law, I agree 100%. I didn't write that post (I noted in the opening it's a cut and paste - a UGA guy actually wrote that up).

Honestly, even if Mullen doesn't land a "top 8 class" (as suggested by the UGA guy) by 2020 I think he's in okay shape. He needs to get this current class higher than 17th and get a 10th or better class next year and the 2020 class and he's fine. Sure, we all want a top 5 class - and I think he can do it - but I'm not writing him off if he doesn't land a top 8 class.

That says it all really. Why was Butters losing 41-7 four times a year? Bc we were half the team that the other guys were.
