2014 Mullen:

Mississippi State is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll, replacing Florida State and making the fastest rise to the top spot in the history of the poll.

The Bulldogs received 45 first-place votes from the media panel Sunday. Mississippi State beat Auburn 38-23 on Saturday, its third straight victory against a top-10 team. The Bulldogs are the first team in the poll's 78-year history to go from unranked to No. 1 in five weeks. The previous mark was six weeks by Ohio State in 1954.

Re: Mullen

To me it feels somewhat similar to Spurrier's arrival. When Spurrier arrived at UF he like Mullen had just turned around a small school. Both Spurrier and Mullen had been named the coach of the year for their prior conferences and both had prior UF ties. Spurrier did much more as a player than Mullen did prior to UF. As a coach Spurrier had no national championship rings prior to being UF head coach and had not received a national coach of the year award like Mullen has (Maxwell).

Edit: This is the first post in a thread about how the Mullen hire feels like Spurrier hire on Swamp Gas.

Seider is a very good coach and recruiter. He’s from Muck City and very well respected in that area. I’d fight to keep him if I were DM. He’ll be a head coach somewhere in the future.
