I dont think anyone else would hire Nord. He was at Eastern KY for a reason.Do you think Nord would have performed like that under Saban?

After whiffing on a QB in the early signing period.....and Emory Jones rejecting Alabama for UF, Alabama is scraping the bottom of the barrel for a QB. They're going after a 3-star QB from Arizona:
Brock Purdy, 6'1 197lbs. 57th ranked Pro-style QB, 1676th overall ranking, 18th ranked Arizona recruit. Good stats, has offers from Boise State, UCF, Oregon State, and Iowa State. (Not very Alabama-esque). He's CB'd 57% to Bama, 43% to Boise.

Dude, you forgot your meds.
Seider interviewed for a position with the browns this week. We are f’d if we lose him
Sounds Purdy kewl. And yet...
Exactly. We've owned Georgia for damn near 3 decades and everybody's losing their shcit because of one recruiting class?
I hope it causes discord on the team.I don’t recall uga ever having this kind of recruiting success. Sure, they’ve done well, but the 5*s lining up right now is ridiculous. Hopefully this year is an anomaly, but if it’s truly an indication they are beginning to recruit like bamuh on an annual basis, they will be tough to beat.
I’m not ready to concede just yet, but there’s reason for caution. Hopefully DM will create enough buzz this year to get momentum back in our favor. We haven’t had that in a while.
Fellas, it's time to realize that assistants don't mean crap. They are all a dime a dozen. If they were any damn good as coaches they would be head coaches.
A great head coach can make garbage assistants actually look competent, because he always has a foot up their ass. Do you think Nord would have performed like that under Saban?
Given that Saban runs through assistants like toilet paper, I think Nord would have gotten flushed in days.
You usually can’t keep great assistants long because they are in demand and on the rise. (There are notable exceptions to this, but fewer today than even 10 years ago.)
Great coaches are able/lucky to identify and attract coaching talent just as they are great players. And you’re right, they are also able to lead good coaches to function fine in their program.
I’ll argue a bit with your hyperbole, though. A great position coach can have a huge effect on individual players and their unit. Of course, that’s hard to parse between HC, assistant & players’ talent & drive.
I’m thinking of RayMac & Steve Harris. Clearly influenced by Meyer/Mattison - no doubt Mattison is a great DL coach & DC.
Or, compare/contrast Dwayne Dixon, Zach Azzani & Billy Gonzales. (And maybe move this topic to its own thread?)
I think Ox is more right than wrong on assistants....and you have some very valid points. In the end, having assistants stick around is great for continuity...however, new assistants bring new ideas, new energy, and can be a spark-plug for the returning players.
I think Saban's rotation of assistants is by design. Jeremy Pruitt was a HS coach who took an "analyst" job w/ Saban....promoted to DB coach, took the FSU DC job, took the UGA DC job, then back to Alabama as an experienced DC. F'ing brilliant! Now he's the head coach at Tennessee.
Saban just hired the newly hired DC from Louisiana-Lafayette to be the DB coach. He hired Locksley (after he was rumored to UF) from an 'analyst' position last year...now he's going to be the OC. He just hired the ST's coach from Sumlin's A&M staff as his ST's coach. And now he's rumored to be considering hiring Hugh Freeze to a position.
Another thing to remember, the year Jimbo won the NC he had six new assistants on staff (sure Jameis was a great college QB, but he still had to replace 67% of the staff).
Bottom line, I'm not worried about losing Seider. I just hope Mullen doesn't replace him w/ another Miss State guy (I want an "outsider" from a different program - like Saban/Meyer tend to do).
Good stuff. Love your examples. Thanks.
I’m not worried about Seider either. If he’s an up & out guy, good for him and a bright spot in a train wreck. I’m sure Mullen can find a decent position coach for RB, tougher to replace as a recruiter but not that daunting a task.
Seider's coaching TE's (which is probably why he's interviewing for other jobs).
