How do we not have offset language in our contracts? Foley is GARBAGE. Probably senile at this point. Stupid. Dumb.

Here's a good take on the Butters hire at Michigan (from The Athletic):

Monday, February 19, 2018

Max Olson writes:

Some college football coaches used their newly permitted 10th assistant role to promote and reward, bumping up a staffer into a more prominent position. Others used the extra spot to pluck away a rising coach or address a lingering need. And a few head coaches are going in an intriguingly different direction.

Jim Harbaugh is the latest, hiring former Florida coach Jim McElwain to join the Michigan staff as its new receivers coach. It’s a role he’s previously performed in his career but is fairly overqualified for today. The coach whose program ranked No. 100 in yards per play last season coming in to aid the No. 101-ranked offense is a notable pairing, to say the least.

Over the weekend, McElwain told ESPN’s Chris Low he’ll also be “involved in helping to coordinate the offense” and preparing the game plan. Now that is interesting. Because that means Michigan has an offensive think tank of Harbaugh, McElwain, Tim Drevno (job title: offensive coordinator/offensive line coach) and Pep Hamilton (assistant head coach/passing game coordinator).

What is going on here? Harbaugh seems to be investing in the idea that the answers to Michigan’s offensive problems can arise from collaboration. Another mind, another voice, another coach with a wealth of experience. These arrangements can, in worst cases, breed tension and bitter disagreement. But, best case, they can also produce thoughtful innovation and real results.

Harbaugh is not alone in using that extra spot to add an extra potential coordinator. His rival Urban Meyer pulled off one of the great hires of the offseason in stealing defensive coordinator Alex Grinch from Washington State. That move might have been made in anticipation of Greg Schiano taking a job at the college or pro level. But Schiano is back for 2018. Grinch’s role is reportedly going to be co-defensive coordinator.

How exactly will that dynamic work? So far, Schiano does not sound at all concerned. From his perspective, Grinch only makes the Buckeyes better.

“I’m excited,” Schiano told reporters. “I think he’s going to enhance what we do, for sure, and he’s really great with the players.”

At Texas, Tom Herman used his 10th spot to hire Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand. But Herman also named Hand co-offensive coordinator and did not hire another offensive playcaller, which is pertinent because Herman took over those duties for the Horns’ bowl win against Missouri. So who’s calling the shots on offense? Will it be Herman, Tim Beck or some other arrangement?

“It’s to be determined,” Herman said on signing day.

Confusing? Sure. But that doesn’t mean it can’t work. When it comes to 10th assistants, perhaps we’ll see the best approach was this: Hire the best coach you can and figure it all out later.

Fvkking Fooley you horse-toothed piece of shyt. A contract written by PDS or some other failure of an "attorney" no doubt.
Foley did everything possible to bury the football program. 10 of the last 16 yrs we've been mediocre to pure ass because of his garbage ass HC hires. Then if you factor in his "budgets" for asst coaches/secondary staff and the refusal to upgrade our facilities I would bet money there isn't one AD in the country who did a worse job in (that time span) with the resources we have.

Finebaum LOL's at Harbaugh:

Paul Finebaum on Jim McElwain to Michigan: ‘I don’t think there is a good fit with Jim Harbaugh’

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/...m-harbaugh-michigan-football-florida-good-fit

Paul Finebaum couldn’t resist jabbing Jim Harbaugh when speaking about Jim McElwain’s move to Michigan.

On Monday, the noted SEC Network analyst spoke on WJOX 94.5 FM, which is based in Birmingham, Ala., and he was asked if the former Florida coach would be a good fit at Michigan. On Saturday, ESPN’s Chris Low reported that McElwain had signed a contract to join Jim Harbaugh’s staff. McElwain reportedly will coach Michigan’s wide receivers. He’ll also reportedly help coordinate the Wolverines’ offense and develop the team’s weekly game plan.

Finebaum has a long-standing feud with Harbaugh, so a question about Michigan couldn’t pass without a sharp reference to the coach.

“Well, I don’t think there is a good fit with Jim Harbaugh,” Finebaum told WJOX 94.5 FM. “But I think McElwain needed to get a job, because he was completely forgotten about. … I still think Jim McElwain is a good football coach. I just think he was a terrible fit for Florida, and I think he’ll help Michigan. I don’t think it would take much to restart the Michigan offense.”

Beyond Finebaum’s comment about Harbaugh, McElwain’s addition to Michigan’s staff could benefit both sides. McElwain was without work after parting ways with Florida in October. Despite winning two SEC East titles with the Gators, McElwain fell out of favor in Gainesville after he failed to provide proof that he and his family received death threats. He was believed to have accepted a partial settlement of his $12.9 million buyout.

Harbaugh, meanwhile, has struggled to field a competitive offense in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines have averaged 50th or worse in scoring offense in two of his three seasons at Michigan. Before arriving at Florida, McElwain worked as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and Colorado State’s coach.

Perhaps McElwain can rebuild his professional reputation with a quality stint at Michigan. There’s plenty of work in Ann Arbor to be done.

So Mac is going to Ann Arbor to help fix a offense but he couldn't fix his own at UF :scratchchin: Yeah...that makes perfect sense

Well if you put it that way, Mac should have declined because Hardballs gonna get canned soon.

I think Harbaugh lasts 2 more years. If he gets his ass kicked by Meyer again this year, he could be done. But they're buyout has got to be ridiculous ($30+ million?). He may jump back to the NFL, but his coaching status has to of taken a hit (after the way he was run out of SF and his - more or less - failure to get Michigan back in the upper echelon of CFB).

 Remember when we would have thought "worse than 50th" in 2 of three season was bad.....I'm laughing at some of you who think Harbaugh will be gone or fired soon....Remember his talent level was much worse than ours when he took over in 2015....Urbs time is about up(due to a huge talent advantage) and I'd say JH starts giving him some more heartburn starting next season....Anyone remember how many starters Michigan replaced last year? My guess is Urbs will quit before 2020.

I haven’t studied business law/contracts since my Senior year of Business School at UF...but couldn’t Stricklin negotiate that buyout down when these clowns signed their extensions. Pardon my ignorance, but 1999 was a long time ago....

Hard to say but they will want a win over OSU that is for sure. He has some talent there now so if that QB gets cleared to play I think they will be pretty good. I think with that QB they could make a jump like Georgia did from 2016 to 2017 due to having those top recruiting classes.

Still hanging on, eh?

Just look at Harbaugh’s lousy recruiting class to see where the program is, and its significantly farther behind than expected at this point. Whether he stays or goes, he’ll never beat Meyer. Ever.

Urbs is 200 times the coach. You think he would have soiled his hands and the school by hiring a pathetic cancer like Mac?

Wrong.....period. Meyer has had 10x the talent due to the 2 idiots that left Michigan a 4-8 or whatever they were when Harbaugh took over....He's literally beat Meyer already if not for some home cooked referee job 2 years ago and sh!tty 4th down gift the officials handed Heartburn Boy if I recall correctly.....How many new starters did Michigan have last year?....Urbs won't like the near future I can tell you that much for sure.

Yep. Similar to my sentiments in the Nuss thread, it's amazing how this profession works. You can gain and sustain the reputation of being a "good coach" without a single shred of evidence to support it.

Btw, it's officially "Ann yet Arbor" now. Get it right.

Let's even assume that you're correct in your assertion that it's strictly been about the talent disparity. What part of Meyer's 2nd ranked class vs Michigan's 24th ranked class gives you the impression that tide is turning?

I'm all in for disliking Meyer. But it's not 2010 anymore. He's officially been a beast at every stop. Unbeatable, no. But this notion that "the jig is up" and he's now met his match because a guy who's never even won his division--much less conference or national titles--who sports an 0-3 head to head record and just hired Jim McElwain to help him gameplan, has now taken over the Big10 is absolute lunacy.
