Florida QB commit Jalon Jones should rise in rankings, earn a 4-star rating

http://gatorchatter.com/forums/main-sports-forum.20/

Another popular question this week has been about the 3-star rating for new Florida quarterback commit Jalon Jones and the chances of him earning a fourth star.

Judging by his junior film and list of offers, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened already. I definitely expect him to rise in the recruiting rankings during the summer and fall.

Jones is currently ranked the nation’s No. 6 dual-threat QB by 247Sports, No. 10 by ESPN and No. 17 by Rivals. You become a 4-star recruit on 247Sports with rating of 90, and Jones is at 89.

In the 247Sports composite rankings, an industry-generated average of all three recruiting services, Jones is the nation’s No. 10 dual-threat quarterback with an 88.20 rating.

He plays at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, a talent-rich region with some tough competition at the high school level. Last season, Jones led the Panthers to an undefeated record (13-0) and their second consecutive Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship.

Since the end of his junior campaign, Jones has landed offers from Florida, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Tennessee. He also grew a half inch and gained 25 pounds, measuring in at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds on his visit last Friday.

Rivals rankings confuse me. There are a 3-4 DT QBs that have no business being ranked ahead of Jones. No coach is taking Daniel Richardson over JJ. Not a one.

DE Derick Hunter visiting Saturday, says Florida is ‘back to the old days’

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-derick-hunter-visiting

DE Derick Hunter attending Florida spring game
Top-200 overall recruit Derick Hunter plans to visit the Gators this weekend for the fourth time in six weeks.

The 4-star defensive end from Dunbar High School (Fort Myers, Fla.) attended Florida’s junior day in late February and has visited twice this spring, most recently last weekend.

Florida State and Miami were both trying to get Hunter at their spring games this Saturday, but he has decided to return to Gainesville for the Orange & Blue Game.

“I can’t miss that,” said Hunter, who is ranked No. 190 nationally in the 247Sports composite. “I just want to see the fan base come together. I’ve been seeing how it looks in practice throughout the spring, so I want to see the Gators come alive again and I want the fans to get a good glimpse of it. Last year was a little downfall, but it’s time for a major comeback.”

Hunter has a lot of confidence in the direction of the Florida program under first-year coach Dan Mullen and his staff. The nation’s No. 14 strongside defensive end watched the opening weekend of spring ball in mid-March and saw improvement from the team in its second scrimmage.

“They are making major progressions,” Hunter said. “Everything is moving fast and all the pieces are falling into place. It looks like it’s back to the old days, which is what everybody wants it to be like. … It felt good just being around everyone on the team and some of the other top recruits.”

Announcement coming for ‘Dirty D’
Hunter had a film session with Sunseri after Florida’s scrimmage and enjoyed soaking up more knowledge from his potential position coach in college.

Sunseri serves as the primary recruiter for Hunter and they’ve formed a close bond. ‘Rambo’ is the nickname Hunter goes by on Twitter, but Sunseri has his own catchphrase for the 6-foot-4, 276-pound pass rusher.

“He calls me Dirty D,” Hunter said. “Every time we’re watching film, he says, “Did you see that Dirty?” We were just in there going over film with each other the whole time. We’ve just built a relationship that’s probably unbreakable right now.

“The first time he laid eyes on me it was like love at first sight. He’s one of the funniest coaches I’ve ever been around. He makes everybody laugh and have a good time around him. The whole D-line loves being around him.”

Hunter also has a tight relationship with Mullen, who contacts him on a weekly basis. There’s comfort level between the two of them and Hunter said they were cracking jokes during his last trip.

“We talk all the time. I talk to him every few days and we play around with each other. Now we just have that relationship,” Hunter said of Mullen. “We don’t need 1-on-1 time where he tells me, ‘This is what it takes to be a Florida Gator.’ I know what it takes to be a Florida Gator. Coach Mullen is always juiced up about football and that’s how I am.”

Hunter plans to visit Clemson on April 19 and attend Georgia’s spring game April 21. He will then make an announcement the following week.

The Gators are considered the team to beat in his recruitment at this time, but the Bulldogs, Hurricanes and others have been making a push for his pledge.

“Everything is tight right now,” Hunter said. “I have an announcement coming up on April 25. That is my mother’s birthday. She passed away on April 21 and I didn’t want to announce anything that day because I will have a lot going on. I just want to celebrate her birthday, so I’ll drop the announcement on April 25.”

Florida recruiting: Gators in contention for several prospects from Georgia

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-peach-state-prospects-2

Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart has made it harder to get top recruits from Georgia, but the Gators are still having success in the state.

Florida did not land any Georgia players during Smart’s first full recruiting cycle in 2017, when UGA signed the No. 3 class in the country with 17 in-state signees.

The Bulldogs followed that up with the nation’s top-ranked 2018 class, but new Florida coach Dan Mullen and his staff came up big in Georgia late in the cycle.

The Gators signed four players from the state, including three of their highest-rated recruits: 4-star quarterback Emory Jones (Franklin, Ga.), 4-star running back Dameon Pierce (Bainbridge, Ga.), 4-star cornerback Trey Dean (Hampton, Ga.) and 3-star guard Griffin McDowell (Leesburg, Ga.).

Florida has a chance to keep it going in the Class of 2019. Mullen and Co. have offered more than 40 recruits from Georgia and several are showing interest in the Gators.

Top-150 overall guard Keiondre Jones visited Gainesville last month and plans to return Saturday for the spring game. Jones is the cousin of Emory Jones, and the Gators are in a great spot to land him.

Florida has also hosted 4-star offensive linemen Luke Griffin (Brunswick, Ga.) and Warren McClendon (Chatsworth, Ga.), who visited last weekend. Griffin attended Florida’s junior day on Feb. 24 and de-committed from Georgia on Sunday.

Tyler Fromm, a 4-star tight end from Warner Robins, Ga., also attended junior day and will be back Saturday for the Orange & Blue Game. He is the younger brother of Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm.

The Gators had 4-star defensive tackle Jaelin Humphries (Lawrenceville, Ga.) on campus March 24 and they’re now one of his top-5 teams, along with Auburn, Georgia, LSU and South Carolina.

RELATED: OLB Derrick McLendon a priority target for Florida DC Todd Grantham

Last week, Florida hosted 4-star linebackers Tyron Hopper (Roswell, Ga.) and Derrick McLendon (Tucker, Ga.), who has a strong relationship with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. The Gators are considered the team to beat for Hopper, the nation’s No. 13 inside linebacker in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Like Fromm, 4-star cornerback DJ Turner II (Suwanee, Ga.) plans to attend the spring game Saturday after visiting for junior day. Florida is also in the mix for 4-star athletes Jashawn Sheffield and Jaylin Simpson, teammates at Frederica Academy (St. Simons Island, Ga.) who received a visit from Mullen in late January.

Elsewhere around the SEC:

LSU: lands grad-transfer CB from Stanford, Terrence Alexander. A 5'10 180lbs, played in 40 career games at Stanford and had 7 pass breakups and made 1 interception. He missed all but one game last season due to injury. As a result, the NCAA granted Alexander an extra year of eligibility. He also visited Tennessee before deciding on LSU.

Miss State: landed a 4-star DE from Nashville. Ani Izuchukwu, a 6'5 220lb weakside DE. Izuchukwu is the No. 14 weak-side defensive end in the class of 2019 and the No. 10 overall recruit from the state of Tennessee.

Miss State just added another 4-star DE: De’Montre Russell, 6'5 225lbs out of Provine in Jackson, Miss. Rated the No. 13 recruit at his position and No. 12 in the state of Mississippi, Russell also had offers from Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

I’ll be surprised if this kid is not a gator.

A 276lb DE from HS? Me likee.

Believe it or not, he's CB'd to UGA.

I spent about 20 minutes last night looking at 247's top Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi recruits. It's disgusting how many kids are 100% CB'd to UGA (and it doesn't really make sense because they can't take 8 DE's). It's really at a point where UGA can pick and choose which kid they want. On the flip side, UF is in on just a handful of the top kids (as far as the CB's show). For the top Florida kids, our best shot is: Zipperer, Sanders, Elam, and Hunter. Outside of those 4 we may not get any in the top 50 from our own state (we have two right now who are #51 & #55).

I looked at the Miss kids because our staff just came from that state. I'll give MSU and Ole Miss credit, they're keeping most of those kids home. We might get one of the top 20 (Alabama has 1, LSU may get 1, and I think Auburn got 1).

This is how you build a roster:

Kirby cuts another non-contributor:

Report: Georgia WR Michael Chigbu considering ending football career

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/g...el-chigbu-considering-ending-football-career/

Michael Chigbu’s football career at Georgia may be over.

Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart told reporters Thursday that Chigbu is considering retiring from the sport due to recent injury issues. Chigbu, a wide receiver, has one season of football eligibility remaining. A product of Holy Cross in New Orleans, Chigbu began his UGA career in 2015 when he recorded four catches for 28 yards. In 2016, he appeared in 10 games and made six starts, logging nine receptions for 88 yards. Chigbu appeared in six games last season, but did not make a catch or carry the football.

Chigbu, who made the 2017 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll, could potentially keep his scholarship as a UGA student without counting toward the 85 scholarship limit for the football team if his injury is deemed a medical disqualification.

I’m not sure if you’re talking only about defensive players?

I think we have a pretty good shot with the two big-time wide receivers that decommitted. I think we have an excellent shot with Trey Sanders as well.

Yet another 5 star coming. Dude is huge. Punisher rb who could also play OLB. Havent watched his film but sounds like maybe a Derrick Henry type athlete. Absolutely the best collection of talent in the country will be in Gainesville.

Evaluation from 247:

Crouch is a big, physical running back. He shows good vision and anticipation. Crouch is decisive and punishes defenders. He is most effective running between the tackles, but can bounce the play outside when needed. He also catches the ball well and is a good blocker. Crouch can run too high at times, so he needs to improve his pad level. However, he has a chance to become a big-time college football prospect.

Does that not sound familiar?

3100 yards and 31 TDs....LAST YEAR ALONE. He does run pretty upright, but he's a beast. Would be awesome if we can pull him instead of Climpson.
