I’d take this kid in a heartbeat. Tua is the flavor of the month in Tuscaloosa, but Hurts is still a good player. He’s definitely better than any QB we have on our roster. I’m just being honest. I can’t think of a scenario in which a starting QB who has already won a National Chamionship as THE guy on his team and was the starter for most of another season in which his team won the title again was in danger of losing his job. Tua may be better, but Hurts is too talented to ride the pine. I doubt he would be allowed to transfer within the SEC, but I’d take him without hesitation if he were interested in coming here.

Just wanted to point out that Hurts hasn’t won 2 NCs at Bama. They lost to Clemson his frosh year when he was the starter. He’s only got the one title from a few months ago. Also,I would agree that he’s better than what we currently have but I don’t think he’s elite. He can’t throw very well...he seems like a one trick pony blessed by having a lot of talent around him, IMO.

Well he did throw the winning pass in the BCSCG.

Oh wait, never mind. Bye Hurts.

He was carried by 20+ five stars. Hurts was a weak link.

So a few here keep insinuating that some among us can’t read, and are thus jumping the gun on being critical of the transfer rules and it’s impact on cfb. The mere speculation of Hurts approaching the QB competition with the attitude reflected in the OP’s title is a rabid combination of fake news and baseless rush to judgement. So...

"Coach Saban's job is to do what's best for his team. I have no problem with that," Averion Hurts said. "My job is to do what's best for Jalen—and make no mistake, Jalen is a quarterback, and he wants to play quarterback. He loves Alabama, loves Coach Saban and everything about that place. But he wants to play, and he will play…"

What if Jalen doesn't win the job, he is asked?

He shakes his head slowly, answers begrudgingly. "Well, he'd be the biggest free agent in college football history."

I stand corrected. He’s still better than anybody we have on the roster.

I wouldn't put it past Saban to name him the starter and then demote him after a few games just to keep him from tansferring.

I get more laughs than reliable information out of Bleacher Report.

They could start fixing it by stop acting like they're the Wikipedia news source for sports.

They are barely a rung above us as “journalists”. That article was ok, tho.

I bet he’d wind up at Oregon or Nebraska.

He takes too long with his reads and looks indecisive at times when he has a long time.

Still, he’s really good. As a freshman he drove his team to take the lead in the NCG and lost to an seasoned, elite star QB who carved up Bama’s defense in 30 seconds or whatever to win the game. And don’t forget, Kiffin blew out of there right before the game.

Yeah, I agree with all of that. While I think our offensive systems have failed players as much as the players failing, I do think that Hurts is a solid player for that "manage the game, don't lose it" approach, and likely better than anything we'e had recently outside of Grier. Other than some critiquing, I don't see too many bashing his skill set or even the fact that he's likely going to become a "free agent". That's the system that is in place, and he's exercising his right. I just don't think it's good for cfb long term, and those quotes above reinforce that.

I'm glad this wasn't so prevalent, and that neither Wuerfel nor his father had this mindset in the spring of 1994, or our football history might look considerably different.

Hurts is probably the worst qb sabans had at bama. He's kinda been their anchor.

Saban is a dick but I just don't see him playing that game. I just don't. I feel like he'd rather not have that kind of distraction. He'd rather let Hurts haul ass than have that crap.

Hurts is scheduled to graduate this December. His stats, 24-2 as a starter (although Tua won the last game Hurts started), and 59 touchdowns and 6,442 total yards the past two seasons, are among college football's best. Tua wasn't even close to perfect in the Championship game, and almost lost it to a bad interception. He's just a rising sophomore, and broke a bone in his hand this spring that he has since aggravated. Saban will name Hurts the starter right before the first game, and tell both guys that Tua's going in for mop-up duty when the game is clearly won, or if Hurts is in trouble. Hurts pretty much has to to declare for the draft afterwards for this situation to work out best for him. Tua starts next year. Book it.
