Thinking about Pinero and the NFL draft today, it dawned on me that in McElwain's first year at UF UF had the worst place kicking and after Treon got the job and started regressing the worst QBing that I have ever seen at UF. McElwain went out immediately and fixed the place kicking issue, but let the QB issue fester. Had he done the opposite and fixed the QB issue and let the place kicking issue fester, he very likely would still be UF's coach.

It is just amazing that after 3 years McElwain could not put together a credible offense. And it is like he did not understand his job depended on it.

Good point, but would that have changed is idiotic attitude toward his co-workers and bosses? Eliminated those idiots and their criminal actions with credit cards? Stopped his foolish idea that death threats did not require police notification, or were a fantasy? Those as much as poor play caused his firing in my view.

The thing is if you both win particularly with an exciting offensive style of play then:

1. your attitude towards the UAA doesn't matter nearly as much and would have been seen by the fans particularly here as needed to get the UAA off the dime on facilities.

2. the idiots stealing credit card numbers shows you are a disciplinarian if you win despite them.

3. reporters and people would talking about wins and the exciting offense and there would neither have been time for questions or reasons for excusing making like making up the death threats.

Now I am not saying McElwain had it in him to do this. I am just pointing out that he immediately went out and fixed that place kicking problem, but for some reason, inability, lack of emphasis, not understanding the job requirements or some thing, never got the QB situation fixed when his position depended on it.

Mac’s greatest accomplishment was stealing a kicker from Saban.

Quite frankly, these are both HUGE failures on Fooley's part. He just could not understand Florida football is no place for the diamond in the rough candidates...not upgrading facilities is just plain STUPID...

I have also been driving around Gainesville today and discovered in horror that my favorite basketball court of all time at Hume Hall had been torn down for a freaking parking lot. Part of my youth gone forever.

Hume is now the honors dorm. I guess the honors students wanted parking more than athletic activity. Parking at Hume was terrible. If you moved your car from the parking lot across the street good luck finding a spot upon your return.

It was the honors dorm when I was there in 2003. Not a recent development.

Foley and failure are synonymous. Football makes money and has primacy. Falling behind in football funding is ignorant egotistical idiocy. Hiring Butters is akin to failing standardized testing by spelling his name wrong on the answer key. Slight edge to Butters, what a clusterfriick.

Then not managing to get close enough to ever use him.
Manage? When did Mac effectively manage anything? By declining penalties on the other team when it would have helped us to take the flag? Or... I don't know... any other situation that this moron was confronted with. I still would like to see Mac's confirmed IQ published. I'm not kidding.

I agree that hiring a national championship coach is key. Foley hired one in basketball , football and baseball. Can't think of another AD who did that.

Foley following the strategy of hiring a Saban assistant coach (Muschamp,Mac) for a head coach failed. Not many AD's can say they had three national championships under their watch in football like Foley did.

EVERY AD misses on coaching hires. Bama's ADs from 1993 to 2006 certainly did not fare well and got NCAA probation (Foley never went on NCAA probation).

Not many AD's can say they had 2 HOF football coaches leave under their tenure

Well, maybe 3 if you count Billy D.....
I'll take that any time. Spurrier and Billy wanted the challenge of professional coaching after winning 3 national championships. Meyer burnt out after 2 national championships and after Mullen left his staff.

If the price we have to pay after winning 5 national championships in the tough to win sports is losing those HOF coaches then I can live with that. Of course during that period no other ADs had coaches with 5 national championships in those sports.
