The real story is that in the week after signing day Grossman contacted UF. UF at first thought he was an unsigned guy from the prior class that they had never had on their radar looking for a landing spot. When they realized he was a prospect for the upcoming class, they evaluated him and as you say offered him and he quickly committed.
I remember hearing/reading that he couldn't get a face-to-face meeting with Spurrier, so sent SOS his highlight video. After SOS saw it, Rexy became the first (only?) qb that Spurrier ever offered without first seeing him throw in person.

At this point I too am hoping EJ is the real deal and the starter this year. One would think if Mullen planned on RS EJ, he would've gone after Burrow or will pursue Johnson

Mullen must be planning to play Jones. I sure hope so.
I don't think there's any way around it, even if it's a mostly Wildcat package. There will be a wildcat package for someone. If it's not Kadarius Toney, then who other than EJ? Surely you'd prefer to have someone to keep to the defense honest. We did run some Percy (and another RB? I cant recall) at Wildcat some early in 2006. (Maybe Tebow wasnt ready? I dont know why.) Will we do that with Scarlett? Who knows.

Will Franks leave if EJ assumes the reins? I hope Dan keeps them competing for the job until the start of the season or brings in another QB. I would feel much better if we had 4 QBs on the roster at all times.

I hope EJ starts day 1. Whether Franks leaves or not, we'll still have trask. Still don't understand why Toneys not in the mix.

Probably, but who knows. I honestly think Franks should pack on some weight and switch position to TE. He’s a fairly athletic guy for how tall he is

I've said before, but if he transfers...who will take him? It's not like teams will be lining up to give him a scholarship. Same w/ Trask. Franks best bet is to put on 20 pounds and play TE.

Here's a SDS article about mid-season predictions:

Predicting 10 midseason headlines we'll see in the SEC

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/predicting-10-midseason-storylines-2018-season-sec/

6. Feleipe Franks announces he’ll transfer from Florida

Let me make a couple things clear. One is that I’d feel bad for Franks if this happened. Why? I’m not sure a ton of quarterbacks — besides Will Grier — could have thrived as a redshirt freshman with Jim McElwain. In steps Dan Mullen with a completely new system and Franks is suddenly the odd-man out. The other thing is that Mullen would fight like crazy to prevent a midseason transfer. In Mullen’s ideal world, I think Emory Jones redshirts and Franks stays on as the No. 2. If Mullen names Kyle Trask the starter — that’s my guess as of right now because of Trask’s accuracy in the intermediate passing game — and Franks realizes he’s no longer the quarterback of the present or the future, he’ll try to salvage some eligibility elsewhere.

Florida is the only SEC power with a unsettled QB situation. Georgia has theirs, Tennessee has Keller Chryst, Auburn has Stidham, Alabama has Tua, LSU has Burrow. BTW, Auburn is a player for Hunter Johnson from what I understand.

Only way Franks is on the team in 2019 is if he starts all 12 games this year and has an All SEC type of year. That won't happen. EJ will be the starter game 1 of 2019 and I'm guessing it will be evident come spring 2019. Franks is gone.

I read Hunter wants to go to the Big 10

Might it be time to start this conversation now that Burrow is a corndog?

Two schools emerge for Hunter Johnson after Clemson transfer

Expect Johnson, an Indiana native, to look at Purdue and Northwestern for his next stop, sources tell 247Sports. Due to NCAA transfer rules, Johnson will have to sit out next season and will be eligible starting in 2019. He'll have three years of eligibility remaining when he returns to the field that year.

I think how it actually went down was that Rex and his dad came down to meet with SOS and rain caused SOS to cancel his golf round and they got to speak to him briefly and that's when he told him they don't recruit Indiana but asked for his tape and then he watched it and contacted them right afterwards when they got back to Indiana. If it doesn't rain that day UF probably misses out on him...only Spurrier
