Osborn was able to take Nebraska to the next level when he started pulling kids from Florida (I.e.- Tommy Frazier) and elsewhere (the douchebag Peter brothers from NJ I believe) to complement the big corn fed homegrown guys playing in the trenches.
There IS no homegrown talent in Nebraska anymore, and I'm not being flippant. They just had their first 4-star player out of that state this past year for the first time in like 7 years or something. And don't make me laugh that he's going to get Florida blue-chippers to live in Nebraska. It will not happen.

The stuff Seabee posted above is eye-opening, and is why I think Frost took a job he didn't want. No one knows more than him how insane the fans are in that place - he disowned them when he played there, for God's sake. They WILL NOT SETTLE for "upper tier" in the conference - it's national titles or bust.

There is no doubt in my mind Frost is going to regret taking that job.

Osborn was able to win by paying about 100 scholarship players from Texas or Midwest to play for Nebraska and then allow each county in Nebraska to give it's best players scholarships to "walkon" at Nebraska also.

What is the basis for this claim?

The whole part. The first part leads to the second part.
Nebraska was almost solely responsible for the rule that said any student on scholarship that played football had to be treated as on an athletic scholarship. They always found ways to find "academic scholarships" for their instate "walkons" and they had about 60-70 of them.

That's a sensational story. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but how in the hell could they get away with that year in and year out without it coming to light? I came up empty trying to corroborate it on the net.

It did come to light. It is why they made the rule. Nebraska was the only one who managed to field rosters of 140-200 players.

Eventually they changed that also, now only a small amount of walkons can practice and dress.

Just to be clear. That many Nebraska football recruits were awarded academic scholarships and it was deemed okay by the NCAA?

No. They were abusing it before the rule and the rule was adopted.

I knew a kid who walked on at Nebraska in the late 80s. He passed up a scholly to a few directional schools, Kintucky and maybe Indiana. He was well taken care of by the fans. Not like a really scholly player of course though.

Yes, lots of support for "the walkon program" at Nebraska. wink wink

Bammer did it a bunch too. The other team known for 150-200 man rosters.

Which years were they able to practice the scheme before the regulators cracked down?

They’ve got plenty of big, homegrown guys to play O-line and interior D-line, positions that you don’t necessarily need 4–5 star kids. I think the only reason he wouldn’t succeed is for a reason you alluded to...if he really doesn’t want to be there & mentally isn’t into the job. Other than that as a reason for failing, I think he’ll do well there. Time will tell and you may be proven correct but I’m sticking with my original thought that he was a good hire.

I don't recall. It has been a while now. Late 80s early 90s. I'm sure you can google the rule change.

Our AD most definitely got the guy he wanted. Don't buy into the fake news about being the 4th or 5th choice. Mullen was always at the top of his list. Your worst case scenario is the BS here. He checked off all the boxes including 9 years as a head coach in the best football conference in the Country. Just as important he has proven success in developing elite and winning QBs which is what we need. Most importantly he understands and embraces the pressure that UF will throw at him. If you don't believe that just look at what we got with Mac.
We will find out soon enough if he can win here. In the mean time I for one see this hire as a huge upgrade and a natural for many reasons. His record will determine his success.

Interesting story. It seemingly does fall in synch with the program's decline.

Frost "pitched" Nebraska Admin for 6-year scholarships, saying "these are football players after all."

Frost will be just like pj fleck of Minnesota a total nobody in the big 10. Because it's hard to win this isn't Western Michigan or ucf anymore. He will have to come up with aa ro the boat saying like fleck does
