How many pumpers are still excited that we wasted so much time in California?

You have to go where the talent is! No one should have a problem of Mullen TRYING. And he is TRYING. Get off his back man.

Fvkk you.

I thought you were leaving.

The talent is in Florida. That is where we have to go.

It appears we are mostly going to Mssippi to look for leftovers.

It’s stunning how badly Mullen miscalculated Florida’s current “brand”. He must’ve really believed that recruiting would be just like it was when he was here last time. He better figure out the recruiting side of the house quick (focus on FL and the SE, hire/retain top recruiters (Seider for Knox?!?!?! Seriously?), etc...) or we’ll be doing the same thing all over again in 4 years. The only thing that keeps me hopeful is that he was able to make MSU competitive in the West with worse talent than we have here.

California was a total waste. The earlier post that said you only go our there if a kid shows extreme interest was correct. We've got too much work to do in this region to spend time on flyers.

Sounds to me like the staff is concentrating on putting forward the best possible product they can cobble together for the 2018 season and hoping that the team's performance becomes a selling point for players who want to see what the play in each of their particular positions on the field will look like under Mullen and then make a decision on whether they like the fit.

Problem is, who will be left to pick up after the season ends?

Not sure what qualifies as “pumping” at this early stage. I’m optimistic by nature and am hopeful Mullen & Co. will succeed.

That said, I’ve never understood recruiting California. Unless a kid has strong interest, family ties etc. and so responds eagerly to basic mailings or a phone call they should leave it alone. Those resources are MUCH better used closer to home.

No he wasn't, that's a myth that doesn't hold up to the data. He had a losing record in conference which is why he went tied for 4th, 5th, 5th, 4th, tied for 5th, 2nd, tied for 5th, tied for 5th, tied for 4th. He fielded a competitive team one year, 2014. There are only 7 teams in the division so if you finish in the bottom half every single frikkin year but 1, that's not being competitive. He feasted on weaklings in his OOC schedule and did respectably in bowl games, but that's about it.

Mississippi State Bulldogs (Southeastern Conference) (2009–2017)
2009 Mississippi State 5–7 3–5 T–4th (Western)
2010 Mississippi State 9–4 4–4 5th (Western)
2011 Mississippi State 7–6 2–6 5th (Western)
2012 Mississippi State 8–5 4–4 4th (Western)
2013 Mississippi State 7–6 3–5 T–5th (Western)
2014 Mississippi State 10–3 6–2 2nd (Western)
2015 Mississippi State 9–4 4–4 T–5th (Western)
2016 Mississippi State 6–7 3–5 T–5th (Western)
2017 Mississippi State 8–4 4–4 T–4th (Western)

You do have to laugh with people trying to spin he had good success at Miss State when he routinely lost to the better teams there and only had one winning SEC record in 9 years.

I hope he gets it going here but that is a joke argument people make. The only thing looking good so far is the S&C program if recruiting doesn't get on track real quick.

The California thing will probably go down as the biggest mistake early in the Mullen era. Such a poor use of resources and to miss on every target from there.

Hopefully that will be lesson learned.

It was part of the "we dont need Seider we have this great old dude who knows everyone in Cali" counterattack.

Solid work as usual.

I'm also not sure how people who are paid handsomely to recruit can't recognize the inherent risks of chasing kids on the opposite side of the country. Put aside the tendency for them to flake and stay home. Pretend that the Cali 5* = Florida 3* theory doesn't exist, or isn't largely accurate. There are dozens of examples of kids who sign, and within 2 years are homesick(Robinsion just a few weeks ago). They're naturally going to be less inclined to stick it out when times get tough without some measure of support structure within driving distance. And with the much more player friendly transfer rules that seem to be in place, your chances of landing a kid and seeing him through 4-5 years are slim enough to make the whole venture not worth the effort. Again, we're all from different back grounds and professions that have nothing to do with cfb coaching, and we can see this a mile away. How is this routinely missed by paid professionals?

Wait until the class is in before jumping to conclusions about our efforts in California. Oregon and USC could look bad on the field this year. It isn't over until it is over.

Booby Bowden said you recruit their mothers and Doc Holliday said we recruit the HS coaches.

Mullinz said lets go checkout Malibu Beach.

The most amazing part is that record allowed him to parlay it into 7 million a year .

But he's our guy like it or not, and I'm with you in hoping he makes some strides. The players look bigger and stronger for sure. The schedule is favorable, the SEC down, especially the East, we've been beaten down so much that expectations are lower at UF than they've been since I've been watching. He couldn't have found a better time to make the move despite the lack of roster depth at some positions.

You would normally think of this as a "his big opportunity, don't blow it" situation but with the dollar amounts these days there is no downside for him honestly, and if he never got another job after this he's still set for life. All the risk is on us if he flames out and we are starting over yet again in a few years.
