With the exception of UK, Grantham has done a good job so far. We're doing better defensively than any of us expected, but what's most encouraging is that we are improving every week. Hope that continues so we can improve our chances to beat UGA, which until now I didn't think was possible.

With all the missed tackles (including behind the line), I don’t know how much is on TG. He put his guys in position to blow up plays, but he can’t tackle for them. Also, the tackling greatly improved when Reese and CeCe returned.

I've seen some footage of TG on the sidelines and it seems to me that the dude is enjoying the hell out of his new job.

For those holding his UGA stint against him...he's coached a few other places.

Unless we think he will throw the UGA game:facepalm:

I was impressed that he pulled back at the end from continuous blitzing and reaped rewards from it. Maybe CDM has a good effect on him?

Agree that tackling has vastly improved, but disagree that they were in position to blow up plays against UK. Schematically we were terrible at containing the QB, and UK called plays like they new exactly what our defense would run.

We were poorly coached on both sides of the ball that night, but I will say that Grantham, not just the players, stepped it up after that embarrassing debacle. Offensive coaching has improved too, but not as much as the defense cause we still get some head scratching play calls occasionally.

This. Consider if we would have had Reese and Jefferson for the KY game, how likely is it we would have won that one? Wasn't Marco out by that game as well, or did he get injured in that game?

I love that the players are pumped and attacking and doing well. Certainly better than many of us thought them capable. To me, that's coaching, because it's the same players who finished 4-8 last year.

Now flip it, and consider if we lose 1-2 of these guys off the defense by injury. Do we suddenly have cracks and weaknesses teams can and do exploit? Or do we have enough depth to fill those holes if they occur? I'm thinking the depth is 1-deep and any injuries creates problems for us. This is why I cringe when VJ goes down on the sideline, or someone else on D gets hurt. To me, the coaching has identified enough talent on defense, and are using them well, so we are not only staying in games but able to rely on the defense to be the difference maker in a lot of situations. But coaches can only work with what they have available. They've knocked the coal off several diamonds, and are polishing them over the course of the season. But it's a small handful to work with and we can't afford to lose any of them.

He sure looks good doing the Gator chomp and dropping F-bombs at the end of the game celebrating with us
That WAS fun to watch. I thought his only mistake was not pressuring the QB when it was 4th and 19 and game and he only rushed 3, giving Joe time to complete that 1st down pass. Other than that, my hat's off to him and his ability to match up. He's especially handled Joseph perfectly IMO.

I love our defensive game plan. We attack.

If our DL is as weak as we’ve been told, if our linebackers suck and our DB’s are as young, inexperienced and bad at coverage as we read....then he is a really good coach.

Can’t have it both ways.
I think he's done a hellofajob with these particular athletes, I don't think there can be any argument about that. And they've been as tough as Marines!!

He’s no more a dawg than he is a cardinal. Only spent 3 years at both. Truth is, he probably bleeds hokie. Born and raise in Virginia from what I’ve read. Went to school at Va Tech. Played at Va. Tech. Coached 5 years at Va Tech. like almost any coach, he’s a hired merc.

C'mon, they're all mercenaries, until they find a home.

His home is probably Va. Tech. He spent almost a decade at the school. In 2 decades he’s never spent more than 3 years at a job. In some cases the HC was fired. In others he took another job. It looks like the guy doesn’t like staying in one spot too long. Maybe UF will be different. I like him. I love watching his defense. It is fun. He’s not a dawg. He’s a hokie. Kirby Smart and Will Muschump are filthy dogs.

Wonder how much of it was coaching and how much was the players not buying in. There was a lot of selfish defensive play that game.

Saw Grantham dropping the f bombs running off the field on SC this morning........sometimes I think the plethora of cameras on everybody every second is not that great of an idea.

I should clarify: yes there were some bad defensive calls.

However, I recall several occasions where we were in position to make a key 3rd down stop or a drive killing TFL and didn’t wrap up. Also, there were times we were out of position (players not following instructions).

And to be fair, Snell is a beast and that QB is elusive. Still, I believe if our D made the plays when they were in position to do so, the O would’ve gotten more opportunities.

Actually, I like the fact that he’s not always calling a blitz when most would expect him to. That’ll make other coaches think twice. BTW, he only rushed 3 when Stiner made the game ending INT.

Considering the lack of depth at key positions I prefer the aggressive defense. Besides not many expected much from this team. So why not throw caution to the wind.

2-3 years from now when Mullen fills out the depth I would probably prefer a less aggressive defense.
