No you can't. Read the actual rule.

Hang on. Read the NCAA’s targeting rule.

Exert for defenseless player

Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14):

  • A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
  • A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
  • A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
  • A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
  • A player on the ground.
  • A player obviously out of the play.
  • A player who receives a blind-side block.
  • A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
  • A quarterback any time after a change of possession.
  • A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet-first
Also, a new piece of language added to Note 2 in 2018: “When in question, a player is defenseless.”

So by rule this player was defensless. And when in doubt call it.

Now I would like every targeting call to be explained as to what portion of the rule was violated and posted to the internet.

I did not see it as any force to the head or neck area, but the angle was not that great. It looked like a hit to the chest, but perhaps it moved up as the player was blocked.

We agree that this is a foolish rule with too severe penalties and not enough objective criteria.
Dude take your own advice and real the ENTIRE rule. That is only the part which defines what a defenseless player is. The rest of the rule says what you can and can't do to a defenseless player. There is NO RULE that says you can't hit a defenseless player. You just can't hit them in the head or neck area or launch into them. It would be perfectly legal to block the guy in the chest.

Yes as I said they assume a lot and what looked like a perfectly legal block could have risen up to the neck area. With their stupid assumptions effectively such blocks are very dangerous to get a penalty no matter what.

Soccer Moms assign Gern to bring the orange slices.
I can't believe how many silly responses to a serious question there have been ! I thought I would find at least a few intellegent sensible gator fans on this site to have an intellegent conversation on a problem that has cost us a number of players. Two gator players threw punches in the Lsu game and got away with it . In a very close game one player making a dumb personal foul could cost us a game . You don't see championship teams doing that . I love the gators but they need to stop that garbage . Argue the point instead of silky " what Olympic sport do you like " or you bring orange slices to soccer moms " nonsense !

Your original post is quite judgemental. You don't know the circumstances of what happened, and if anything it's Mason and Vandy that instigated it and then made it worse. Also this isn't a usual situation like Muschamp, who acted like a lunatic on a weekly basis.

Plus, after Butters I don't mind a little fire occasionally. His awe shucks attitude is why his teams constantly quit in the 2nd quarter. The only two times I saw him get made is after Kelvin Taylor's penalty and when Franks beat UT by not throwing to the play's intended receiver. It's refreshing to see our coach get on someone who isn't on our own sideline.

I disagree with it. I disagree with every single targeting rule in every form.

If you don't want to play football, then don't play.

^^^^THIS! 1000x THIS.

What in the world are you saying ? That anything one player does to another Is ok ? If your son had his neck broken by a cheap shot you might have a different opinion ! Your attitude is why fewer parents are letting their kids play . Rules are put into place for a reason ! Sometimes they need to be modified or adjusted but saying " I don't want any rules on cheap shots" is obtuse ! It's easy for you to say when it's not your brain or body on the line . Very macho but very dumb

All what we saw came from unforeseen occurrences. The penalties suffered serve as self-edifying lessons, to both sides. Plus, on the sidelines the kid gets immediately & harshly fussed at. I don't want any planned reticence instituted weekly in practices.

Don't take the Head Hunter out of my linebacker. A little combative, true, some maturity need apply, yep. Joseph has some field enforcer attitude which is good. I guess we'll see if he "coachable" and less of a drama king. Go Gators!

For sure Gstud. At this rate the most effective LBs will be removed from the Butkus Award list due to too many violent hits.

I'm pretty sure Houston launched himself into the Vandy guy during the crackback.

Players get injured on those plays.

Glad they are gone. It was the right call.

I love his fire but if you ask him he would tell you he didn't stay under control and his players pouring on the field was wrong . I hated shark humping peanut butter boy but that has nothing to do with gator players throwing punches , body slamming players after the play was dead and getting ejected from the game

We're 5-1, we bounced back and won a tough game after looking like total sh!t, we beat LSU and control our destiny in the East and have a coach who actually gets it and yet someone is b!tching about a fight where the coaches literally blew each other at the midline after the game because they both realize going postal was in the heat of the moment.

Man the fvvck up and enjoy the moment...
